Throughout his career, Mercury performed around 700 concerts with Queen worldwide, often describing them as the “Cecil B. DeMille of rock and roll”. The band was the first to play in South American stadiums, breaking records for concert attendance in 1981. In 1986, they performed behind the Iron Curtain in Budapest, one of the biggest rock concerts ever held in Eastern Europe. Mercury’s final live performance with Queen took place on 9 August 1986 at Knebworth Park in England, drawing an estimated 200, 000 attendees.

Mercury received formal piano training up to the age of nine and later learned guitar while living in London. He was known for his incredible rhythm, passion, and feeling on both instruments. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman praised Mercury’s playing style and successfully composed a number of Queen songs on the piano. From the early 1980s, Mercury began using guest keyboardists, including Fred Mandel for his first solo project. He collaborated with Morgan Fisher from 1982, Mike Moran in the studio, and Spike Edney in concert.

Mercury played the piano in many of Queen’s most popular songs, including ” Killer Queen”, ” Bohemian Rhapsody”, ” Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy”, ” We Are the Champions”, ” Somebody to Love”, and ” Don’t Stop Me Now”. He used concert grand pianos and occasionally other keyboard instruments like the harpsichord. From 1980 onward, he also made frequent use of synthesisers in the studio.

Despite writing many lines for the guitar, Mercury possessed only rudimentary skills on the instrument. Songs like “Ogre Battle” and ” Crazy Little Thing Called Love” were composed on the guitar, featuring Mercury playing rhythm guitar on stage and in the studio.

  • I always remember an ambulance driving past us through the crowd when Queen came on. Someone got stabbed and died near the front. A great day, massive queue to the bar only to find it was a queue to but tokens and then had to queue for the bar. I never got pissed that day. Big country were pretty good too….

  • A very cool song! It gives me so much good vibes and positive emotions! I am feeling so happy everytime I listen to this song! It connects me to the 90’s and all the positive emotions like joy and inspiration I experienced like a kid in that time. That it is very special for a song. I have that only with a few songs so strong. Also with the Menu music of Actua Soccer ( article game of the 90’s). This song is so good, because of the beat and refrain. Because of listening to this song so much I have enjoyed my summers more and have experienced them like something magic. It changed how I view reality in the summer and my perception. That is I think one of the best things what can happen to someone who listen to a song. I am very gratefull that I know this song and that it meant so much to me! I will keep listening to this song very much!:)
