Are Witchcraft And Sorcery The Same Thing?

Witchcraft and sorcery are two distinct practices that aim to control the supernatural through magic. Witchcraft is often viewed as an innate or spiritual practice, while sorcery is associated with personal gain, manipulation, and the use of supernatural powers. Both practices have faced societal challenges, but one key difference lies in how practitioners acquire their power. Sorcerers typically obtain their magical abilities through the use of spells and incantations, while witchcraft is closely tied to nature, healing, and the balance of energies.

Sorcery is often associated with personal gain, manipulation, and the use of supernatural powers, while witchcraft is closely tied to nature, healing, and the balance of energies. Practitioners are called sorcerers, sorceresses, or wizards, but rarely is the term “witch” associated with it. Anthropologists often use the term “witch” to identify individuals alleged to practice socially prohibited forms of magic, while “sorcerer” refers to someone who intentionally takes on the practice.

The global conversation about witchcraft and sorcery can be confusing due to different people using the same words to talk about fundamentally different and even unrelated phenomena. Sorcery implies magic where powers are intentionally used for a harmful purpose, often involving artificial means. Witchcraft implies the possession of a supernatural power through a pact with evil spirits, which may be exerted involuntarily.

In contrast, witchcraft is unconscious and innate, with the power of witches residing in mangu, a substance in the witch’s belly, inherited from a deity. Some scholars distinguish sorcery from witchcraft by noting that it is learned rather than intrinsic. Modern witches are often seen as consuming forces, eating the life power of the victim.

In conclusion, witchcraft, sorcery, and magic all relate to encounters with and attempts to control the supernatural. Witches practice witchcraft, which is essentially energy that comes from the deity.

  • Then I’m a Sorcerer but I’ve always called myself an eclectic grey witch. None of them sounded much different to me. Could you go into more detail of where they are different? I am also hearing many call themselves magicians, even though in my head, a magician does tricks. And then you have Sages, Seers, Shaman, it goes on and on.

  • Witches are not a type of sorcerer. Sorcerers are people who practice a form of magick, as are witches. But they are not the same thing. They are different traditions, from a different cultural background, with a very different intention. As are wizards, shamans and druids, they are all mages, aka people who practice magick in one form or the other. That is what I know. Blessings from the lakeside. Kono Loki. 🕀♋🕀💫
