A 2024 Bard can gain up to 14 spells from the Cleric, Druid, or Wizard spell list if they learn all their new spells and swap a prepared spell at every level up. Lore Bards get an extra two on top of that. When gaining a level in this class, you can choose one of the bard spells you know and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Bards can already cast ritual spells, but they are strictly limited by the fact that they permanently learn spells. The key difference from feats/multi-class/other means to get spells from different classes is that Magical Secret changes the ability needed to cast those spells to YOUR. One ability bards gain at level 10 (and again at level 14 and 18) is called magical secrets, where bards can pick a couple of spells from any other class list.
The DnD 5e Bard is fantastically versatile, with access to any skill, expertise, and full spellcasting, allowing them to fill essentially every role in the party. One of the big upgrades to the 2024 Bard class is the enhancement of Bardic Inspiration, which now lasts an hour instead of 10 minutes.
Bards can learn spells from any class’s list through Magical Secrets, which are first obtained at 10th level, then at 14th level, and finally at 18th level. However, this ability is not available until level 10.
As a bard, you know 3 cantrips and 8 spells that can be third, second, or first. Control water is either a 4th or 6th level spell, and a bard is incapable of casting 42nd level spells. At 6th level, you learn two spells of your choice from any class, and a 1st-level Harper scout learns two new Harper scout spells of any level she can cast.

How do bards pick spells?
To prepare a list of bard spells, choose a number equal to your Intelligence modifier and your bard level, with a minimum of one spell. The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, a 3rd-level bard with an Intelligence of 12 can include four 1st or 2nd-level spells in any combination from your songbook. Casting a spell doesn’t remove it from your list. You can change your list of prepared spells after a long rest, but it requires time spent studying your songbook and memorizing the lyrics, melodies, and rhythms for each spell on your list.
What are the best spells for bards from other classes?
The most frequently referenced spells for inflicting damage, providing healing, and offering defensive capabilities are, respectively, Fireball, Swift Quiver, Aura of Vitality, and Counterspell.
When can I change spells as a bard?
As you advance in this class, you can choose and replace a known bard spell with another spell from the list, provided it has spell slots. Your Charisma is your spellcasting ability, derived from your heart and soul. It is used when a spell refers to your spellcasting ability and when setting the saving throw DC for a bard spell. The spell save DC and attack roll are based on your proficiency bonus and Charisma modifier.
Can bard change cantrips?
The game does not allow changing cantrips in all classes, as it follows the D and D5 rule. The lack of information about cantrips and the in-game Players Handbook makes it difficult to choose them. A variant, UA rule, allows for swapping one cantrip within the “swap 1 spell at level up” feature for all spellcasters, including clerics. However, this feature has not been added to official source material yet. The next expansion should include cantrips for half-casters like paladins and rangers.
When can classes change spells?
All spellcasting classes can change spells during each level up, with certain classes like Clerics, Druids, Paladins, and Wizards able to change their Prepared Spells from their Known Spells. For other spellcasting classes, one spell can be replaced during leveling up, but Cantrips cannot be replaced. To change a spell, go to ‘Replace Spell’ on the left sidebar, select a spell to change out, and then click ‘Confirm’ to replace it with the new spell.
Can wizards use spells from any school?
In the fifth edition of the game, spells are not constrained by school, but selecting a school facilitates the replication of spells from that school. Wizards are able to learn any spell that is listed on their spell list. When can a bard prepare spells?
At the 10th level, you can learn secrets from various magical traditions. As your prepared spells increase in the Bard features table, you can choose new spells from the Bard, Cleric, Druid, and Wizard spell lists, and replace a spell prepared for this class with a new one. At the 18th level, you can regain expended uses of Bardic Inspiration by rolling Initiative. At the 19th level, you can gain an Epic Boon feat or another feat of your choice, with Boon of Spell Recall being recommended.
How many spells does a level 5 bard get?
A fifth-level bard has eight spells and three cantrips at their disposal. However, they only possess four first-level spell slots, three second-level spell slots, and two third-level spell slots. Cantrips are not subject to the limitations of spell slots and may therefore be cast at will. The browser in use does not support cookies.
Do bards use arcane or divine magic?
Dungeons and Dragons is a magical game that incorporates magic as a mechanic and gaming aspect. Classes like wizards, sorcerers, and bards use Arcane Magic, allowing them to cast spells. Even martial classes have sub or prestige classes that allow them to use magic. The game uses a two-fold magic system in its worlds and worldbuilding: Arcane and Divine. This may surprise those who have played only 5e.
Can a bard use a spell book?
Bards add spells to their book through luck and happenstance, and cannot engage in spell research or scroll research. They can access new spells by using another bard’s spell book, chancing upon a wizard spell they understand, or translating a spell they don’t. If the DM is generous, a bardic college or hall might have bardic spell translations available for trade or purchase. Bards usually wait until 10th level before using wizard scrolls, as spells on scrolls are recorded in a wizard’s notation.
However, an optional rule allows bards to attempt to read wizard scrolls before 10th level, with a chance of success of 25 at 4th level and 10 at 10th level. Low-level spell use is hazardous for bards, but if willing, they can try it. Optional abilities for bards include spell translations, spell research, and the ability to read wizard scrolls.
When can Warlock change spells?
The process of “leveling up” enables the player to replace one current spell with a new one, in addition to learning new spells at certain levels. In the Warlock class, if the DM permits the use of Unearthed Arcana, one spell may be exchanged for another at the conclusion of each long rest period.
📹 How People THINK Bards are Played VS How they’re ACTUALLY played

Bard has been quite interesting class to play. Especially since I did not know what kind of person my character would become. Skard Nightsinger, my goliath valor bard, became a smartass that loves nothing more than to annoy certain type of people. His motivation for this is to teach them laugh and smile more, since they may die tomorrow. He is “happy go lucky” and doesn’t always think through consequences of his actions. Althought he can become serious(insert serious Saitama face), if the situation is bad. Usually this means we are in deep shit. Since Skard is physically strongest of the party and has the best ac, he usually fights in the frontlines, using healing word to heal party and illusion magic to confuse enemies. Once he saved party from tpk with minor illusion and silent image-spells. First he used minor to create sound of howling of a wolf; and then created a illusion of a wolf pack with silent image. The bandits failed their checks and ran away. This was nice, because most of the party were doing death saves. Oh yeah, almost forgot the best part. Once Skard broke mentally a bulivug prisoner by saying: “Well, Vopi. I hope you are happy now. I told you no one would get hurt, if you help us to free the prisoners your king has captured. But noo. You had to be a hero. You had to escape and go to warn your tribe. Now, look around you. All of your comrades. All of your friends. Dead. Just. Because. Of. You.” Vopi was a sole survivor of 50 bulivug war party, which we were able to terminate with guerilla tactics.
I once read a story about a BardBarian. At one point, he was in a castle under siege, and a catapult rock was about to hit him. However, he happened to own an indestructible lute from another quest I think. And he pulled it out and smacked the boulder away with the lute like a baseball bat. The story I read told it in a considerably more awesome way, but that’s the gist of it I think.
This reminds me of a time a friend of mine once told me campaign they did with their other friends a while back. I ain’t too interested in D&D but I do love the stories. One of them was what I think was about an aromatic Bard cursed by a diety to have things and others to hopelessly fall in love with them unless they have HIGH resistance, which made saving the kingdom with their party hard when the enemies start coming in. Apparently, the bard had to rule for persuasion to convince the cursed schmucks to be friend zoned and not have a crazy stalker(s) on their tail.
My brother just made a tortle bard. I was very entertained. He doesn’t tend to go the seduction route (and the ones he does he doesn’t play with either of us in the same game). The tortle is hilarious though. Got the sassy old man humor is the way he plays it. The kind who tell very entertaining stories until you realize an hour later that it was all just insulting you. Can you tell that he added vicious mockery? Also he is fully taking advantage of his ac and even added a shield. He has been begging the dm for an upgraded shield but since his ac is already 19…..dm is reluctant. But hey, brother irl has high charisma. He’s going to get that shield probably in the next two sessions from now.
I honest to god never thought of a bard seducing. Whenever I think of one they’re just a chaotic mess who gets into way more trouble than necessary. The closest I can imagine is a comedically flirtatious bard who fails every roll (subduction wise). Like even if they rolled a Nat 20 they’d somehow end up doing something completely different. You’ve just opened up a whole new world for Honey Soy Chicken (my bard character), thank you
Things my Bards have done since I first started D&D – Dished out third grade level insults for Vicious Mockery – Been sent to talk to people as they are the most charismatic and suddenly I remembered I, as a player, have social anxiety – Became ringmaster of a Circus some fucking how – Been fought over by party members as a best friend – Looked a demon in the eye who said “impress me” and rolled a 34 in performance so he sat his ass back down – Lots of singing and dancing to entertain her comrades – Convinced an entire kingdom of dwarves to give up a stupid war so they didn’t die (in my first 3 sessions ever) – Anytime someone died they would compose a song and sing their heroic deeds to the guild they were a part of – Put their pants, which has a tail hole, on backwards once and now they have a wife – The other one insulted a minotaur, flipped him when he went to charge them, and now they have a husband
That is totaly my Bard. He like maybe 1 out of 5 NPCs we meet (And even in the party he doesn’t get along with our warrior), and is into dragons. He even worships Tiamat, not carring that she is Chaotic Evil. Ah, if only I could think of better insults when casting Vicious Mockery, he would be perfect.
My first character I became attached to was a bard her name was asuna akatsuki I was a teen don’t judge her favorite song to sing was Katie Perry fire work she was a haling and her personality equated to a Diva and the sin of greed. The funny part was we were using 1st edition pathfinder so the buffs I provided were good enough that we survived combat we had a gm who was around when d and d 1st edition was a thing that the party hated her but also loved the buffs so it was a struggle.
My character is a Tiefling bard who’s ADHD and an alcoholic. He’s also addicted to eating candles. Recently he got an odd job from a scholar that ended up sending his soul to Pandora and he can no longer see the color purple without taking the poison effect. Also, at one point he decided to bite into a dead fish (that was suspiciously dry immediately after being pulled from water) and accidentally swallowed mushroom spores that turned him purple and nearly killed him before a druid saved his life.
My first time as a Bard/draconic scorcerer i ended up with a traveling harrem of an adault White,Blue, and Black, and one Dragonborn Simping over my bard who kept stringing them along with incredible rolls to not actualy bed them “….oh sorry Xyharan the black death you know I adore you but im afraid I have one of those magic headaches again.” should have seen that night of nat 1’s coming….
I had ended up playing a bard who’s goal was to survive… And only got by through convincing every ally to listen by diplomacy and bluff every enemy into thinking they never stood a chance. All the while knowing my character was glass with everyone else summoning lighting or bending steel bars with their hands.
the confusion my bard experiences when someone isn’t attracted to him is no confusion like any other (It has been implied that he’s got it on with not 1, not 2, but 3 separate non-humanoid monsters, and countless NPCs. My dm is SCRAMBLING to come up with excuses as to why an npc wouldn’t be interested)
I was playing a Bard and the other player was a wizard, and our dm had us fighting some like eldritch spider monstrosity… thing. Through a combination of bad initiative rolls and saving throws on one side and a crit on the other, the wizard end up dying the first round (typical), and my little gnomish bard is left to solo this thing, which would have been a challenge for both of us. So i ask the dm if we can bend the rules for this fight just a tad and let me cast bardic inspiration on myself, rather then it’s usual rule of inspiring everyone but the caster. She agrees under the condition that I act out exactly how I use bardic inspiration in the midst of battle, and it’s my turn. So my little gnome decides to pull an epic acrobatics move and leap onto the monsters back, stabbing it right between the shoulder blades. The monster then tries desperately to throw him off, but, succeeding a stupidly high athletics check, my bard manages to stay on. I decide on my next turn, after stabbing the monster with a second knife to get a better grip in it’s back, to use my bonus action and cast bardic inspiration. So that’s how my bard ended up frantically shout-singing the lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody while hanging on for dear life to the monster equivalent of the mechanical bull ride at carnivals. (I used the inspiration die to barely slip past the threshold for the next athletics check)
This wasn’t DND but… My last match there were like 6 enemys vs a bard and a samurai. Samurai and enemies attacked 5x in a round. They did a 6 round stand off. The bard took invisibility and shot every foe from the back with a recurve bow ( against ranged AC is a fixed number+distance+target’s size and movement and criticals happen if your attack with a base attack+D100 is bigger than AC+50. So it was pretty easy). The bard killed 5 guys… then he went for he next stack, used an air paralysis potion to stop 3/5 foes, blinded the remaining 2 on a top of a staircase, kicked them back down with a telekinetic blast and instakilled 4/5 of them just before the city guard arrived. And then… he had no psionic powers left, no mana and the ony way our bards can get mana back is by singing a song midnight when no clouds are present. It was midday and raining 24/7 for 2 weeks constantly XD
my group recently started a campaign where i play a bard that is a thief so he only uses his charisma to make it easier to conn/pick pocket people and will only try to seduce people so he can rob them…which is hilarious because another player just happened to have decided to play a rogue that doesn’t like to steal
