Did Authors Of The Old Testament Utilize Numbers?

The Old Testament contains passages with large numbers, such as the ages of the antediluvian patriarchs in Genesis 5 and the censuses of the fighting men of Israel in Numbers 1 and 26. Some believe that these numbers were purposely used as symbolic numbers by Old Testament writers, while others question whether the number 3 represents the Trinity. Biblical numerology, a technique used by Christian gnostics to find deeper meaning in the New Testament, is not limited to the Old Testament but is found throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Exodus.

The Bible uses certain numbers as structuring principles in the composition of its texts, with early Jewish mystical works also contributing to its significance. Biblical numbers often relate to a wider usage in the Ancient Near East and have been significant in almost every major religion. Biblical numerology attempts to convey a meaning outside of the numerical value of the actual number being used.

Throughout the history of literature, writers have used numbers as a device for producing and organizing text. In ancient languages, letters were also used as numerals, with the first letter alpha being 1; beta being 2; and gamma being 3. There is a sort of symbolic numerology used in the creation of the Bible, which is apparent and not accidental.

Ivan Panin noted the amazing numerical properties of the Biblical texts, both in Greek and Hebrew. There is no evidence for the use of gematria or numerology in the Hebrew Bible. Understanding the meanings and symbolic significance of numbers in the Bible is crucial for understanding the Bible’s historical context.

How did God write the Old Testament?

The Bible, a collection of 66 books written by over 40 authors across three continents, was assembled through the process of canonization. This assembly, which identifies writings that were authoritative for the Church because God inspired them, was not a result of a church or government determining what books were “in” or “out”. The acceptance of the books as both authoritative and inspired by God occurred as they were written, understood, and received as God’s Word.

The Bible’s diverse literary styles, including poetry, story, legal codes, personal letters, apocalyptic revelation, drama, and fortune-cookie-like sayings, were influenced by the personalities and abilities of the writers. The Bible’s canonization process, which took generations between the first writing and the last word, was not a sudden event, but rather a result of the acceptance of the books as God’s Word.

What were Old Testament manuscripts written on?

A manuscript is a hand-written document, originating from Latin words manu (hand) and scriptum (written). There are approximately 5, 800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, 10, 000 Latin manuscripts, and 9, 300 manuscripts in other languages. The New Testament autographa, written by the original authors, are unavailable, but manuscripts have been discovered dating back as early as the 2nd century.

Parchment is writing material made from animal skin, while papyrus is a reed plant that grows along the banks of the Nile. There are 1, 276 New Testament papyri, the earliest copies of portions of the New Testament. Different formats of early scripture include scrolls, codexs, and palimpsests. All original scriptures were written on scrolls, and manuscripts can be found in various formats, including paper, parchment, or papyrus, with one end bound.

Is numbers a part of the Old Testament?

The Book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Pentateuch, the foundational texts of the Hebrew Bible, which form the first part of the Old Testament, which is also the first part of the Christian Bible.

Who originally wrote the Old Testament?

For over 1, 000 years, Jewish and Christian tradition believed that a single author, Moses, wrote the first five books of the Bible, known as the Torah and the Pentateuch. However, readers of the Bible have noticed inconsistencies in the Five Books of Moses, such as Moses’ own death near the end of Deuteronomy. A volume of the Talmud, a collection of Jewish laws, suggests that Joshua, Moses’ successor, likely wrote the verses about Moses’ death. This raises the question of whether it was possible or not for Moses to have written the books. Joel Baden, a professor at Yale Divinity School, argues that this is one opinion among many.

What did Old Testament writers write with?

Scribes in biblical times used plant fibers and animal skins as writing surfaces. The oldest known papyrus fragment dates back to 2400 BC, while parchment scrolls have survived since 1500 BC. Scribes also used pottery chards, stones inscribed with an iron pen, clay tablets engraved with a sharp instrument, and wax tablets. Papyrus, a paper made from reeds, was the most common writing material available during biblical times. The Greek word for book, biblos, comes from the name of the Syrian port of Byblos, while the English word paper comes from the Greek word for papyrus, papyros.

To make papyrus, the thick stems of the plant reeds were stripped and cut into thin, narrow slices, beaten and pressed together into two layers. The reeds produced a natural adhesive, and any jagged edges were trimmed off. The sheet was cut to the desired size and polished smooth. The plant fibers naturally created lines for scribes to write straight lines.

Is numerology used in the Bible?

The Bible does not explicitly address numerology, but it uses numbers symbolically, such as 7 for perfection or 12 for God’s power and authority. The repetition of certain numbers in the Bible suggests a symbolic importance. Biblical texts offer varied perspectives on the validity and use of numerology in faith. E. W. Bullinger’s comprehensive guide explores the intricate patterns and symbolic meanings of numbers found throughout the Bible, offering insights into their spiritual significance.

Is 888 a Jesus number?

In Christian numerology, the number 888 represents Jesus, or Christ the Redeemer, either through gematria or as an opposing value to 666, the number of the beast. This representation was condemned by Church Father Irenaeus as convoluted and reduced “the Lord of all things” to alphabetical form. In Chinese numerology, 888 usually means triple fortune, as the sound of 8 (pinyin: bā) sounds like 發 (pinyin: fā) of 發達 (prosperity). The triplet of 888 is a form of strengthening the digit 8. Addresses and phone numbers containing the digit sequence 888 are considered lucky and may command a premium.

203 is the smallest number with twelve divisors and forty-second composite, with an average of 60. Is Numbers in the Torah?

The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Hebrew Bible and the fourth of five books of the Jewish Torah. It has a complex history, possibly due to a Priestly redaction of a Yahwistic source from the early Persian period. The name of the book comes from two censuses taken of the Israelites. Numbers is one of the better-preserved books of the Pentateuch, with fragments of the Ketef Hinnom scrolls containing verses dating back to the late seventh or early sixth century BC.

The Israelites begin their journey at Mount Sinai, where they receive their laws and covenant from God. They are then sent to the borders of Canaan to take possession of the Promised Land. However, they refuse due to the hardships and authority of Moses and Aaron. God condemns them to death in the wilderness until a new generation can carry out the task. Additionally, God destroys approximately 15, 000 Israelites for rebelling against Moses. The book ends with the new generation of Israelites in the plains of Moab, ready for the crossing of the Jordan River.

Who wrote the Old Testament Book of Numbers?

The book of Numbers, a central figure in the Pentateuch, is believed to be written by Moses. The name “Numbers” is a translation of Arithmoi, a Hebrew word meaning “in the desert of”, and is attributed to its extensive collection of statistics, population counts, tribal and priestly figures, and other numerical data. The narrative begins in the second year after the Israelites left Egypt, camping at Mount Sinai around 1444 BC.

It ends thirty-eight years later, in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho, in 1406 BC. Numbers records the Israelites’ journey through the desert of Sinai, their time at the oasis of Kadesh-barnea, and their eventual arrival at the banks of the Jordan River.

Did Moses write the book of Numbers in the Bible?

Moses is often considered the author of Numbers, but his authorship is not explicitly stated within the book. As the Israelites leave Paran, they face challenges such as thirst and a judgment from God. Moses oversteps his bounds by speaking to a rock to bring water for the people, dishonoring God and receiving the same fate as the wilderness generation.

Moses rebels again, and God brings venomous snakes to bite the people. Moses intercedes for the people, and God instructs Moses to create a bronze snake to heal those who look at it. This symbol symbolizes the challenge of God’s covenant faithfulness, as even his judgment can be transformed into a source of life for those who seek it.

The Israelites head into the plains of Moab, where the king of Moab hires a sorcerer named Balaam to curse Israel. Balaam fails to curse Israel, and God gives him a vision of a future Israelite king who will bring God’s justice to the nations, recalling Jacob’s promise to Judah in Genesis 49.

  • Dr. Heiser…Your ancient language skills and your teaching style really “light” me up !!! I suppose the crowning moments are realizing ‘how much’ I DON’T know about ‘so much’…that make even your shortest presentations, so fresh and alive !! The Lord Jesus keep You, and Your Family, Every Day, Every Way !!❤️☕

  • I had no idea you’re ill, sir. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy and appreciate your teaching and learn so much from you—things I didn’t learn in seminary! I shall surely be praying for you and your health. May God bless and heal you, I pray. If you share about your illness, I shall pray specifically. However, God knows, and that is sufficient.

  • I love that Mike…so true. It helps to see the imperfections of the “Kings”, our beloved men of God. This shows us the truth about our human situation as well as pointing out that the True King of Kings will have nothing shameful to report as He is ever Faithful and True eternally. Off topic…I got here at 665 likes out of over 8k views. Come on! I didn’t want to watch the article with the MOTB # staring at me the whole way through. Hahahahahaha! I wonder how many of us skipped over pushing that 5 to a 6? Hahahahahaha! Being human is hilarious. So I’ll hit it now, after viewing, okay guys. It’ll be a Hit n’ Run. hahahahaha!

  • This article let me down a little bit! I thought you were gonna go over a more broad over view of the human factor in the writing of the Bible and the multiple layers of Political Agendas, Religious Agendas etc the biases in the Bible by the writers and the way they wanted the reader to lean to, I think it’s a fascinating concept (s) to go over! I still enjoyed this article but I would have loved to see more examples which I’m sure you do! I pray for your recovery, all things are possible through Christ who strengthens you 👍

  • Great insight, as always! So my co-worker and I had some conversation about this very thing today, and lo and behold, when I get home and check my emails I come across this article! I’m sure it’s not a coincidence, haha. We talked about how the account in Chronicles is not a mere rehash of the account in Samuel, but they do tell the same story from different perspectives. While Samuel has more of a focus on people’s unfaithfulness to God through sin, and the dreadful consequences of sin, Chronicles seems to clean a lot of that up and focus on the good with a hope for the future. Unfortunately I think that can be missed since Chronicles is perhaps one of the most overlooked portions of the Hebrew Bible. That may be because it’s ordered right after Kings in our Bibles, but in the TaNaK it’s one of the last books and summarizes the events of previous books with more of a hopeful outlook. Also continuing to pray for your healing Dr. Heiser! Your teaching has been a blessing in my life.

  • To help give you a chance to be saved, I’d highly advise you not to say anything on GOD’s Word that is not 100% true. Because if you lie on HIS Word then you have blasphemed against HIM. And the only way you can be forgiven for that is if you did it ignorantly. GOD made all of HIS Word. HE says “all Scriptures are given by the inspiration of GOD.” Men didn’t write the Holy Scriptures. They wrote it as GOD had them do it. Just as one speaks in touches it as GOD speaking in and through them as HE gives the utterance.

  • Unless Bathsheba’s husband was dead, David could not lawfully marry her. The unrighteous death of Uriah, in a sense, mirrors the unrighteous death of Messiah that Messiah’s beloved bride might be rightfully remarried. Notice that the penalty for uriah’s death was the death of David’s first born son. Jesus was the only son of Yahweh. Jesus had to die for the sins of others. Uriah had to die to reveal the penalty of David’s sin. However, Jesus, unlike Uriah was resurrected to claim his beloved bride who had been given a certificate of divorce by Yahweh. In this way, David was indeed a man after Yahweh’s own heart. Yahweh still loves His lost, rebellious, adulterous remnant bride, the wife of a false theological system. David and his bride, Bathsheba was a prophetic type of Messiah and his remnant.

  • I keep seeing triple repeating numbers like 222 or 111 or 444 or even 1111 and it has been happening EVERY SINGLE DAY, non-stop, for a few weeks now, and this never used to occur – or if it did, it was rare. I HAD been praying to God for Him to show even more of Himself to me, soooo….so I wonder? I do know that God likes numbers very much and everything that He does is mathematically perfect – and that each number has it’s own meaning to Him, so I am inclined to believe that this is from Him.

  • I haven’t prayed to God for many months since the pandemic had started. I cried to him and asked to forgive my sins. I am ashamed, I am sorry. Ended the prayer, I continued to cry some more lol. I looked up and saw it was 4:11pm. For some reason, I literally googled searched 4:11 bible verses and each scripture from different chapters of the Bible had answered my prayer. I was shook. God is great, God is love

  • I’ve been really depressed, scared anxiety, and condemning myself, but lately I’ve been feeling a lot better. I am trying to rid of my sins and alcohol addiction. I been seeing 1111 333 444 555 a lot. This morning after praying I picked up my phone and noticed the time was 1:11. After many months of feeling alone scared and depressed, I’m finally feel better and am sure god is trying to tell me he loves me and move on

  • I see this almost every day 111, 11:11, 222, 333, 555, 777, 12:12, 10:10, 11:14 1:44 etc. on clocks, com, puters, cell phones, computers, lisence plates, people’s addresses, billboards, etc. i am constantaly unconsciously guided to these numbers all the time for no reason but, I am aware that he Lord is trying to communicate with me Just like He is doing for everyone else. The bible uses nubmers and they all respresent something.

  • Anybody get a combination of numbers? I read the Bible I love the lord, I picked the number 7 as a number I liked because I felt in the Bible God referred to 7 a lot when I was reading genesis so a week ago I just decided to make 7 my lucky number. Since then I would be reading the Bible and all these 7 numbers are popping up not just in the Bible but on my social media as well and it’s just interesting I have not found one article on YouTube yet actually explaining what I’m going through. All my numbers are different but they are all “angel numbers” from what google says but I just type in ” what does the number… mean” this season of my life has been trying but one of the most transformative ever so I don’t believe numbers are bad I do believe they can be a sign or message of comfort if God intends for it to come that way but I don’t think numbers have the power to lead you anywhere. At least nowhere good if that’s all your following. Praise God, God bless.

  • Me too it happened now almost 3 yrs…2 yrs I thought mirroring numbers but now from this month I check the numbers in bible verse…God’s messages comes…I actually prayed to God can You share your wisdom with me…and then checking Bible verses with these starts happening…even the numbers can be deceiving but God’s Grace has guided me to right place…still I am doubtful and sceptical so I always clarify with God more and more and try to keep in His words…I have also quit seeing tarot reading…I only trust God and Jesus and feel safe with Them💖🙏🏻

  • Praise God : I want to share with you what the Lord showed me about what 11:11 that everyone is seeing is all about. God is the God of numbers…Gematria. The Lord showed me that this is the RESURRECTION AND RAPTURE. The Lord said the ONLY sign he was going to give as the sign of His Coming. It was the sign of Jonah. When Israel is attacked…the Bride has 3 and one half days till the EVENT. I have done a article on this called: “Who are the two witnesses and the two prophets?” Revelation 11:1-15…Patricia Sunday Ministries…Shalom

  • see i too had a extreme supernatural occurrence happen to me via a spiritual awakening and physical feeling of an overwhelming sense of light over take me though that felt like unconditional love but im convinced that was the holy ghost because later that night I felt a dark energy that felt the polar opposite and heavy then leave my body after i started talking down to the devil and telling to leave my body. I feel that because Holy spirit and god knew how skeptical i was at the time he allowed that to happen so that i knew the vast difference of loving the first much stronger sense of love and light felt like. But yet i did keep seeing many angel numbers after that and only 6 months later did i learn of how out of fear of me getting closer to god and jealousy there were famaliar spirits that often highjack the connection to distract. But i tell you i still see some repeating angel numbers like 4:44 3:33 and 1:11 and 11:11 and have had prayers and questions i asked god mentally ( the devil nor demons can read your mind) that were then answered to me via random song lyrics on radio or phone as i played them in car or bill board signs, also kept seeing animal totems such as red sparrows, and red foxes or dogs and children just naturally express joy when i was nearby out and about running errands or greeting them from afar. Any Idea or insight into what that means?? I feel that since i had these other signs show up and its not superficial energy like demons or famliars that th second half of me seeing angel numbers and other signs described is arch angels and god communicating to me .

  • Started seeing 1111 at the beginning of the pandemic and it never stopped. I changed my clock to military hours and set a timer to 11:10 just to avoid the number as I thought I was going nuts. I actually went to see a psychiatrist for it what blew my mind was him telling me I don’t need psychiatry there are some things in this world that science cannot answer. And he hinted he see the numbers too. I still remember taking that initial evaluation call while at a museum in Spain looking at all the Catholicism artwork of Jesus. The last 2.5 yr was the most difficult time of my life but every disaster led me closer to god and every disaster got easier. Cannot say with absolute confidence that god is speaking through numbers but I am confident that nothing is a coincidence anymore and faith is required.

  • Been seeing double numbers every single day since early last year. I think it started around Feb after I came back from evening church service one day. That night I saw 11:11. Then it started recurring for weeks. Every time I’d check it out on Google, it’d lead me to angel numbers and I refused to take those meanings because I’m Christian. The double numbers then started to change with 07:07, 08:08, 09:09, 10:10, 11:11 and 12:12 being the most recurring. Sometimes I’d see them like 3 times a day. It really bothered me that I couldn’t decipher the message behind it. I still can’t but I just started telling myself everytime I’d see one of them, ” it’s my season”. Around July 2022, 09:09 started recurring more than the rest of the numbers and it went on for months. One day i had put aside my phone and was talking to a colleague at work when suddenly the phone he was holding lit up and it was 09:09. I honestly thought I was running mad or something. Met the person I was dating on September 9th, decided things weren’t working out and sent him a message that we split up 2 days ago. His response to my message reached me at 08:08 yesterday. 😅. Whatever this double numbers are, they have really stuck on me all year long.

  • For some reason when I tell people about me seeing double numbers like that those things start happening to them sometimes too. It’s like a multiplication thing… I don’t know hahah, but yeah I asked Bob once in person why I was seeing so many different numbers and he told me to ask God what they mean and that God wants to talk to me, which is true.
