For my glimmering, completely white hair, which I’ve had since turning 16, I’ve found that Fanola No Yellow Shampoo cannot be beat! This 12 ounce bottle has lasted for nearly a year, using it twice a week. You need only use the tiniest amount, after using regular shampoo, and I find leaving it in for 1-2 minutes max eliminates yellowing but does not leave my white hair looking like I’m a grape! This product, from One Tech Italy, Fanola, is available on Amazon for around $12. Can’t say enough good stuff about this shampoo and I’ve tried pretty much all the others. Also, have learned over the years to be selective about styling products as some have greater tendency to yellow my hair. And of equal importance, try to never use styling tools on the highest heat settings as high heat does yellow (singe) hair, particularly when a lot of product is used.
I have heavily mineralized well water. As a result, my hair soaks up those minerals for some really odd shading. Be odd me, I wound up using a horse shampoo recommended by a friend for keeping white horses white and whitening manes and tails. It is a blue color, and it gets my silver glowing! I do have some really nice people leave-in conditioners.😋
Love your articles. Where do you find these products? Shimmer lights are in almost any store. Not a problem. Where do you get the color proof and Schwarzkopf products? I hate driving all over town to find them. I love your hair and I’m striving for your color. So far, I haven’t achieved it. I’m a true salt and pepper. Used the manic panic blue steel and pasterlizer. Took the yellow out but I’m still not your color. Everything I’ve used including theSchwarzkopf spray is taking the yellow out but not giving me the beautiful white color. But I’m trying. Please add where to find in your articles. So very helpful. Thank you. You are truly lovely.
I’m not surprised that you love the Colorproof ColorProof Evolved Color Care Signatureblonde Violet Conditioner, because Colorproof makes lots of delicious professional luxury products! That is interesting that Schwarzkopf BC Color Freeze Silver Shampoo is one of your favourites; I’ve tried numerous Schwarzkopf shampoos, conditioners, and gels, and unfortunately, they were all just lackluster for me. I haven’t had to venture into the world of lavender products for silver hair, but when I do, I will refer back to this article, Monique. My late Nanny dyed her hair for over seventy years after prematurely turning white in her mid twenties. When she finally let her hair go back to its natural colour, she had the most beautiful snow white, radiant white hair; a colour of white that was absolutely stunningly beautiful! I can only hope that my non-dyed hair will be half as pretty when I eventually tire of this drudgery of colouring it every five weeks (I’m doing it again, later today). If not, at least I’ll be able to accept your recommmendations for products to use that will, hopefully, prevent me from having yellowed, and unflattering white hair. I would prefer to have a lavender hue in my silver, or white hair as well, I am thinking. Thanks for sharing your most effective products, Monique; I’m sure you’ve helped many women today by doing so! Canadian love, and hugs, Beautiful, Sherrey💕
I have ProVoke Touch of Silver Brightening Shampoo that is such a dark violet shade it is scary. It is super concentrated and a little goes a long way. They also carry a conditioner that is lighter. Skip the conditioner. I also bought Fanola No-yellow shampoo at the as-seen-on-tv store and it’s pretty good as well.
Hi Monique. I really like Kenra’s lightening shampoo and conditioner. I actually use it with other shampoo and conditioners I have- half and half. I do that simply to use up the products that dulled my hair. Honestly, I just can’t see tossing them aside as most cost me far more than I’m willing to admit to. I definitely will try the two products you like. Thanks for the tip.
I do not recommend Shimmer Lights. I think it is very drying and if you have white subway tile and grout in the shower… ack! Have you tried mixing baking soda with shampoo to get rid of yellowing? I have read that is very effective ad the price is right, but I’m afraid it will be drying like the Shimmer Lights.
I have tried the Schwarzkopf but I only had a sample. I bought Joico Color Endyre Violet and I love it except for the smell (like wet dog only when its wet) i bought the largest bottle and I’ve almost had it a year. I’m on the hunt for better smelling shampoo that does the same job. I tried the Schwarzkopf brightening spray and I wasnt crazy about it but I will give it another try. I’ll be perusal to see if you have any other recommendations for shiny white hair. ❤ your articles!
I mix the Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner 50/50 in my hand with my favorite volumizing shampoo and conditioner. If I use the Shimmer Lights alone my baby fine hair is WAY too soft and won’t hold a style. With using both shampoo and conditioner added to my regular I still get the toning I want without sacrificing body. I do it about every 3rd shampoo. I will have to check out the Schwarzkopf!
Hi this is North Carolina friend checking in! So silver is another good one and you can find it at beauty supply stores! Matrix may put that one out. Thank you again I will have to try the Schwarzkopf! Love you and so glad that your life has fallen into place and good things are coming your way. What a difference a year can make in
I just purchased Ion Color Solutions in Cool Blonde from Sally Beauty. I heard Shimmer Lights was very drying, and the Ion had 4 stars on Influenster. I went natural gray this year, after years of coloring dark blonde. My natural color was light ash brown (back in my 30’s!). My color jobs always faded out very yellow, and my gray tends to as well. So I’m trying purple shampoos for the first time. The Ion smells okay – I put the Joico back on the shelf because I didn’t like the smell. if it doesn’t work, I’ll try the Schwarzkopof.
I find all the violet/ toning shampoos and conditioners to be very drying. I usually mix Directions in “Silver” into any white conditioner I have on hand, and that works fab! They make one in “White” as well have yet to try as it’s quite light lavender. I prefer the dark-ish blue “Silver” so far, love how silvery it makes my hair. I did find one at Bed, Bath, Beyond next to Shimmer Lights (ugh the smell, apparently Sally’s has a spot on dupe that doesn’t have the smell I might give a go), but it’s on the light side. Think it’s by Jhirmack (might be spelling it wrong), very inexpensive, good for a perk, mainly depend on conditioner to keep away the yellow. I do tone it every so often with Ion in “Titanium” which needs mixing down with conditioner otherwise you’ll have dark grey hair (dull dark grey, no thanks). Mixing down makes my hair nice and silvery and lasts as I can’t wash it as often due to dryness. Going to have to look into the Schwartzkopf sounds like a winner! Thanks for the comparisons! Happy early Halloween! 😘⚡️🎃👻🦇Jet
I’ve only ever tried Shimmer Lights and agree with the poster below it’s very drying, so I only use it about once a month and then condition heavily. Have you ever tried putting it on your hair when it’s dry and letting it sit? I haven’t but saw where one YouTube poster uses that method. Anxious to try some of the others you recommended. Thanks, lady!
I’m 47 and have decided to let my gray grow out. I had my stylist put gray in my hair (natural dark brown). I really like the look. My mom even got the same thing done to her hair. I’m going shopping for shampoo today, so thank you for the suggestions. I love your look and find you to be very inspirational. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I use Evo Fabuloso Platinum Blonde Conditioner. I usually mix it with a very rich conditioner for ‘daily’ use (actually shampoo/condition every two or three days) and if there happens to be stubborn yellowing from on-set heat tools I will use the Evo alone on the yellowy areas and leave on for several minutes. It really does the job!
Going silver has been an experience!! I decided to become brave and go for it after perusal one of your articles Monique. But there is a long learning curve to find all the right products to deal with the different texture and yellow tones. I just ordered a better blow dryer because I read that the cheap ones can actually burn your hair and cause color distortions. If I don’t use any products other than shampoo and conditioner, my hair feels and looks great as far as the color goes. But it seems to grab sprays and other finishing products and makes my hair feel dry and brittle which I do not like!! Thanks for your recommendations. And I love reading the comments for suggestions as well.
