What is the difference between a raincoat and a rain poncho?

A poncho is a lightweight, packable cape that provides good rain protection and coverage, including the ability to cover your backpack. It is lightweight and packable, making it ideal for wearing over a backpack. On the other hand, a rain jacket offers better fit, durability, and often comes with additional features like pockets and reflective strips. The choice between the two depends on personal preference and the specific needs of the hiker. Rain ponchos are designed to keep you dry, but they do not have built-in insulation to trap body heat.

A poncho is a loose-fitting cape made from waterproof material, often without sleeves, providing good rain protection and coverage. It is lightweight, packable, and can be worn over a backpack, eliminating the need for a separate rain cover. On the other hand, a raincoat is a form-fitting, hooded jacket made from specific water-resistant materials, offering better sealing against rain with features like zippers, drawcords, and sealed seams.

Can you wear ponchos in the rain?

A poncho is a rectangular piece of waterproof fabric or plastic with an opening at the top for the head, a hood, and sleeves. They are designed to fit loosely and cover the average hiker’s upper legs. Ponchos and rain jackets have different advantages and disadvantages, such as breathability and ventilation. Ponchos rely on their loose fit and improved ventilation to wick away perspiration, while jackets rely on the breathability of their fabrics to prevent excess moisture build up.

Some jackets have zippered vents for ventilation, but with a tighter fit, they are unlikely to achieve the same level of airflow as ponchos. As a result, jackets are less effective at aiding evaporation, although it is possible to prevent sweat buildup in cooler temperatures if you layer properly.

Can you wash a rain poncho?

Raincoats and waterproof jackets are essential for keeping you dry and stylish during spring rain. To keep them clean, check the care tag for recommended wash instructions and water temperature. If the exact temperature isn’t available, use lukewarm or cold water. If machine washing directions aren’t available, hand-wash rain jackets to ensure they aren’t damaged. Machine washing can be most effective without causing damage.

Wash raincoats only when visibly dirty, smelly, or after about 4-6 wears, depending on how soiled they get, how much sweat they get, and how much contact they have with skincare products like sunscreen or sunblock. It’s recommended to wash them in the “quick” cycle that most washers offer, designed specifically for smaller loads. Hand-washing rain jackets is recommended if machine washing directions aren’t available.

Are ponchos fully waterproof?

A poncho is a type of rain cover that offers excellent freedom of movement and comfort. It is made of sturdy material that is permanently waterproof, breathable, and compact, similar to a hardshell jacket. A light poncho can be easily stowed in a backpack as an emergency rain jacket and taken out when needed. When choosing a poncho, consider the shape and size of your backpack to ensure it covers it completely. While not very comfortable for backpacking hikes, ponchos are popular among outdoor athletes and cyclists on tours due to their length.

Ponchos come in various cuts, with openings in front or sides, ventilation options like buttons, hook and loop fasteners, or zips, and the ability to be opened up and used as tarps. Some models can be opened up entirely and used as trekking poles, providing instant shelter. Adjust the hood and sleeves to suit your needs.

Similarized rain ponchos are available for those who need to stay dry but aren’t moving much, like fishing or hunting from a tree-stand. These models are not as breathable but offer better weather protection, being permanently water repellent and resistant to abrasion and tearing. Loose-fitting rain jackets are available from Sea To Summit, Salewa, or Exped.

  • I am a waterproofing contractor, flexible cementitious pros: it’s a good product for interior areas with tiles/topping and areas, good as sublayer for the other waterproofings, cheapest among all products. flexible cementitious cons: cannot serve as top finish and cannot withstand direct sunlight. Polyurathane pros: can serve as top finish, it’s the most presentable type of waterproofing, can withstand direct sunlight (if with uv protection coating), can withstand light and heavy foot traffic (pries varies) Polyurathane cons: it’s the most expensive among the products, human errors for application, bitumunous torch membrane pros: the membrane sheet may serve as already be the top finish, and can sustain foot traffic, it’s the most durable among the products if installed properly, because the sheet thickness is even and consistent, A little bit cheaper than polyurathane: bitumunous torch membrane cons: due to time sometimes it’s chalking, hard to fix if with concrete topping or tiles.

  • I bought buildrite polyeurethane and lemme tell you, i’m super satisfied with the results. It prevented leaking on my slab roof. Good thing I did my research first otherwise, I would have gone for a cementitious waterproofing which is not suitable for slab roofing with a little bit of human traffic every once in a while and always exposed to the sun. Thank you sir!

  • I prefer bituminous torch applied compared to any fluid applied waterproofing for roof decks or any open areas… the thing with fluid applied upon application, thickness is not consistent through out the entire roofdeck, it varies depending on the stroke of the applicator since it is applied manually using roller brush or paint brush,”human error May kick in”, plus it is not advisable to apply the material in direct sunlight because it may affect the normal curing period, meaning there is only certain time of the day when you can start the application,,. Also, when exposed to all type of weather specially here in the Philippines, P.U. May develop stress resulting to damage, and in any sense, anything when exposed to weather will eventually deteriorate and this include all type of exposed P.U waterproofing even if it has UV properties, although rectification works is easy, but the thing is, P.U waterproofing is not cheap and this material is sold per pail and not per liter.. 2nd, how often you will repair the roofdeck considering that this material is exposed and may deteriorate at some point even if it has UV properties.? bituminous torch applied on the other hand is difficult to rectify that is why it needs to undergo quality check and leak test before topping works commence. Also, the thickness is consistent all through out, plus, it can minimize micro cracking on the slab due to live loads which is normal to all concrete structure. No, maintenance work is needed as long as it is properly installed.

  • Sir, thank you for this article. I had used Sapal RTU and it has been effective. On my roof deck, we applied Plexibond but after a month I observed that the slab moved and saw some hairline cracks below where the rain water drops from the ceiling. Now I had reapplied Plexibond and that night it rained hard and observed that it had successfully sealed. I will be using my roof deck for my clothes rack and plants. My question is this. Is it Ok to overlay Cleversil on top of Plexibond provided I coated it with Cement Grip?

  • very nice and informative content sir. Keep it up always, Godbless and Godspeed. 🙂 and sir, supplier po ba kayo ng mga waterproofing materials? kasi po i want to setup a waterproofing business naghahanap po ako ng supplier para sa mga materials ko na gagamitin pang waterproofing, maraming salamat po. 🙂

  • Good day po sir, napanood ko n yong mga articles nyo. pwedi po kayo gumawa ng complete vedio ng outdoor Roofdick na may mga ponding Water pag umulan at may crack part on the slab. suitable for walking at mag sloop to drin po. para makasegurado po ako kong anong dapat bilhin at gawin sa slab ko sa 3rd floor na may part nag leleak sa 2nd floor pag umuulan. TIA

Now, everywhere is leaking which is sakit tlgah sa ulo. Maybe, I’ll try to convince my mum to save up for Sapal RTU and those other waterproofing materials shown in the vid.

  • Good pm. Sir, we have done our 2nd floor .. But roofing it might be delayed for sometime due to budget constrained.. Meaning, for awhile our 2nd floor will be exposed… Is it proper to do water proofing NOW? including all the abang,… Like.. Pipes..electrical wires.. Etc. Etc…we will also put floor tiles n the future… What brand or type of water proofing you recommend pls.? Thank you.

  • Sir tanong ko lang bakit ung mga ibang carpenter ginagamit din nila ce·men·ti·tious like flexibond for concrete wall without any topping like tiles. ibig sabihin kung ito lang gagamitin eh prone sa crack and sabi nyo po indi pwede ang cementitous as exposed e yan naman po usually ginagamit sa concrete wall for waterproofing which is yan din ang alam ng nakakarami na cementitous waterproofing ay ok na basta 3-5 times ang coating wala ng makakapasok na tubig sa concrete wall. please explain para ma enlighten po ang karamihan. thank you buildrite.

  • Hi, my ceiling is made of hardiflex, and my roof is gawa sa yero. Is there a way to waterproof the hardiflex ceiling whenever there is water leak coming from the roof? I tried to seal the roof several times, but after a while the seal wears off and the rain leaks on my hardiflex ceiling causing the paint to peel. What is the best solution for this? Thaks!

  • Hi po, magkakaproblema po ba sa effectiveness or bka masira lng ung mix if in case nag apply na po ng coat then while curing process na or on process ng application then biglang umulan po, ok lng po ba ung ganun? Then i continue nlng after tumila ng ulan..or mag wait ulit mag dry ung floor tas saka po mag apply ulit.. 😅 planning to DIY lng po. Thanks if masasagot 😁

  • Thanks for the article Sir! Question po we are planning to use the clever sil on our 3rd floor with sun roof and the sides are open po so pag umulan medyo nababasa din siya then we are also using it as a laundry area so magiging effective po ba ang clever sil or do you recommend another waterproofing product po?

  • Hi Sir, we have an exposed 2F Slab na nakaplexibond ang waterproofing & painted sya. Right now after a year, nagkakaron na ng leaks. May mga cracks & small holes na din. What should I do? 1. Irepair ko po ba ung cracks & holes then i-apply the polyurethane? 2. Iremove ko ba yung plexibond dahil masisira din sya lahat kinalaunan? para malinis ung pag-apply ng polyurethane if ever po, do I need to remove all the paint as well para kumapit ang bagong waterproofing? I hope for your response, sobrang stressed na po kami.

  • Question po, we have a deck above 2nd floor, firewall was waterproofed pero ang roofdeck hindi po. Never po nangyari ito before this year lang po after our neighbor had a roof with alulod na ikinapit sa firewall namin. They insist na it’s because of our roofeck being not waterproofed. Is it our fault or theirs? Please reply. Thank you very much

If eve po ba sinunod ko to maiiwasan na to leak.

This may sound stupid but please bear with me. 2-storey po kasi yung house ko pero yung 1st floor muna ang gagawin ko. Dun sa concrete ng second floor, I’m planning to use the flexicrete dahil nga lalagyan ng tiles pag nagawa na ang second floor but since hindi ko pa sya gagawin, if lalagyan ko sya ng flexicrete maeexpose sya sa Sunlight w/c is not good according sa article. Ok lang po ba na gagamitan ng cleversil as first coating and then flexicrete as second coating or the reverse?

  • hello sir, good afternoon po, question sir, bale sir as of now nagpapagawa po ako ng bahay and ang balak ko po sir is paabang po yung sa 2nd floor, but I can’t tell yet if kailan ko po ipaayos yung 2nd floor. I’ll appreciate sir if makapagfeedback po kayo. I really need suggestions.Thank you sir

Mas dumarami ang supporters ng Buildrite because of your excellent presentations of their product. However, reaching out to avail of your service is very difficult po. I tried FB page, messenger, email and website thru online chat service. Napuntahan po ng Cavite representative after 1 month but since then more than a month na po, wala pa ring update kung makaka avail kami ng service or hindi. Sana po matulungan niyo ko

  • Hello po. I have not heard from your tech team regarding my query and concern. sabi, inspect daw nila but apparently they are busy. But we need to act the soonest as the rains have not stopped. Can you please tell us if we can just apply another layer of the polyurethane water proofing, just following the usual procedure of application of epocoat MB and cleversil on top of the finished cleversil? Thank you po. Reply

  • Hi I came across your youtube website and I would like to thank you for the knowledge and insights you are sharing. I was just hoping I could solicit some advice and recommendations. We are trying to build a small house in Bulacan and are still in progress. We already have a concrete roof deck but unfortunately, it was NOT yet sloped. If we will apply waterproofing, is it advisable to put first a new concrete that will be sloped on top of the existing, and then apply a waterproofing membrane on top of the new concrete? I am concerned that the adhesion of the new concrete might not be good with the old concrete, and that the new concrete might have cracks and the waterproofing might not become successful. What should be the right way of doing this? Thank you, Sir.

EpoCoat MB 1 tube Handy Fix sealant 1 pail (20kg) Clever Sil 3 pails (4kg) Leak Plug

  • good day sirs! very informative article! just to ask a question, is it ok to use polyurethane waterproofing like clever sil for slab which will be considered roof deck for the mean time? (more or less 2 years before the next budget will arrive for it to be laid out with tiles as it is a government project)

  • hi Sir, i have a question is it ok to put polyurethane waterproofing to an existing cementitious waterproofing? if not what is your best advise should we remove the cementitious waterproofing or should we add additional layer of cement on top of cementious waterproofing before applying the polyurethane waterproofing? thank you in advance

  • Hello po again. Questions po. 1. Sa roof deck water proofing, pwede po bang mag cementitious, then topping then polyurethane sa ibabaw ng topping para mas sigurado? 2. 3. How much heat ang kaya ng polyurethane para alam ko lang kung pwede ako maglagay ng brick oven on top of the deck or kung gagamit ako ng tuntungan niya. Thank you po.
