Does Rite Aid Continue To Offer Smokes?

Rite Aid, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States, has removed tobacco products from over 500 stores as of 2022 and is on track to complete the chainwide removal by the end of 2024. However, cigarettes are still available at a majority of Rite Aid locations for those under 21 years old. The company’s COO, Jim Peters, announced the decision during a phone call with analysts.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer announced an agreement with Rite Aid under which the nation’s third-largest drug store chain will raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21 within the next 90 days. This follows Walgreens’ announcement to do the same. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration initiated enforcement action against certain retail locations of Walgreen Co. and Circle K Stores Inc. for repeated violations.

Rite Aid will remove the products from its more than 2,400 locations over the next 90 days while continuing to sell regular tobacco products. The chain will continue to sell e-cigarettes and vaping products due to concerns that they are fueling tobacco use. Rite Aid has made efforts to stop selling cigarettes or any tobacco products at any of its over 2,300 pharmacy locations across the United States as of 2022.

Despite the announcement, Rite-Aid, Wal-Mart, Safeway, and Publix have been oblivious to pleas to stop selling cigarettes even as they describe themselves as “healthy” and “vaping”. Rite Aid pharmacy offers products and services to help people lead a healthy, happy life. Some Tops Markets and Rite Aid stores in Erie County will no longer be allowed to sell tobacco products in March, when a new law takes effect in the county.

CVS Health, a large retail pharmacy chain, removed tobacco products from its over 7800 retail stores in 47 states in 2014 and launched a high-profile media and advertising campaign to encourage smoking cessation. The effect of CVS’s decision on cigarette purchasing was examined using household-level data and state-level data. Household-level data compared the effect of CVS Health’s decision on cigarette purchasing by consumers who previously purchased cigarettes at CVS versus those who purchased at other retail outlets.

State-level data assessed whether the CVS decision led to population-level reductions in cigarette purchasing, comparing states with substantial CVS retail market share to states with no CVS retail presence.

Data were provided by IRi Worldwide, a firm that collects retail purchasing data. To assess changes in cigarette purchasing associated with tobacco removal, the study used monthly data for unique households participating in IRi’s Household Panel Survey. The data included demographic data, monthly cigarette pack purchasing volume, frequency, and location. IRi tracked households’ participation monthly and flagged those who did not report any purchases of any retail good within a given month. All households were de-identified.

The study compared the Nielsen Company’s monitoring of television viewership to understand the popularity and characteristics of shows.

CVS Health, the nation’s first and only national pharmacy chain to eliminate the sale of cigarettes and other harmful tobacco products from its retail stores, has praised the enforcement actions taken by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to curb the sale and marketing of e-cigarettes to the nation’s youth. The company’s Chief Medical Officer, Troyen Brennan, said the FDA’s actions represent the most important step the agency has taken to date to curtail youth use of e-cigarettes and flavored nicotine products.

In 2014, CVS Health announced its decision to stop selling cigarettes in all CVS Pharmacy stores, making the company the first national pharmacy chain to take this step in support of the health of its patients and customers. The company also saw a four percent increase in nicotine patch purchases in the states with a CVS Pharmacy market share of 15% or more.

Finally, research published in the American Journal of Public Health confirmed that customers who had purchased cigarettes exclusively at CVS Pharmacy were 38 percent more likely to stop buying and presumably stop using cigarettes altogether. This research confirmed that the company’s decision had a powerful public health impact by disrupting access to cigarettes and helping more customers on their path to better health.
