Ive been using deva curl since 2015 when tye scandle came out i never had any issues with my hair so i was personally shocked when i seen this. I loved the gel best gel still to this day until they re formulated they line its garbage now . Alot of the ingredients in the old deva line were in alot of other hair care brands so still to this day its a mystery of why only some ppl had issues bc not all of us did .
I remember the moment this all started. I had just discovered their products from a friend and got their moisture melt mask for Christmas. I was devastated when I saw everyone’s experiences. I am apart of the Facebook page. I would never buy their products again and have warned any friends about them even know they have “changed” their ingredients. Thanks for covering this because some still don’t know!
My story is that a few bottles of the style cream were good, then when those ran out and it was time to buy more – the new bottles made my scalp itch, they had a different formula that had a formaldehyde releasing chemical that made my scalp and skin – to my shoulders – anywhere it touched – itchy. My hair had damage, loss of shine, and the curls went from wow to un-amazing, sad, limp, no body, didn’t clump right, it wasn’t the good hair I had always had. The new bottles had this ingredient that the original ones didn’t: Diazolidinyl Urea and DMD Hydantoin. From then on I’ve eliminated any products in my stash that have those and won’t buy any that have these, and I have no more itchy scalp and my curls are amazing again.
I only bought deva curl once and it’s was their travel size bottles at Sephora only because I was in the beginning of my journey and also deva curl is expensive But after Ayesha Malik came out with her story I supported all the women and the lack of accountability devacurl had was enough for me to say I’m never gonna buy and because it’s expensive too
Wow! I used Devacurl products occasionally. I could not afford the products to use daily. I have since moved on and shampoo with Prell twice a week to clarify. And Cowash with a cleansing conditioner 4-5 days a week. I always follow up with Camille Rose Curl Love. Then lightly coat my hair with hair grease. I occasionally use a gel; Camille Rose Curl Maker. My hair is thriving!
great work on this! I can’t help but wonder if that once it was sold to a large corporation there was loss of quality control and there was either a change of ingredients from the original formulas which happens a lot using inferior more cost effective ingredients to sell more and or deliberate in order to destroy and conquer This did not happen in the hands of the creator of the product. It happened after it was sold and it gets diluted to actually where the problem is coming from and a lot of corporate s offer lots of money to buy out companies just to get rid of them. Its sad but true.
Whatever the og deva owner was cooking up before needs to comback deva curl was so good back then. Made my hair so voluminous and thick. I could go a week with just refreshing with water and my hair looks amazing i got so many compliments. I miss it so much no other product did that and i only used one thing which is the wave maker.
Thankfully, I was never apart of their issue. I tried them when they first released, but I have type 4 hair and it didn’t work well. Recently, I discovered their Melt Into Moisture deep conditioner and fell in love, but that’s as far as I would go. I don’t believe in that no-poo method thing. It simply doesn’t make sense. That’s like taking a bath with a lotion and calling myself clean. This same issue happened with the haircare brand Wen and history has certainly repeated itself.
I wonder what really happened tho? I got interested in wavy and curly hair also in the end of 2019 and ordered devacurl products that cost me probably over 100 eur with the delivery (i was living in baltic countries), and my hair also just fell out but since I wasn’t in the US or Canada i didnt really understand what was going on. I still wonder tho maybe they changed their formula or something??
The downfall of this brand was absolutely ridiculous. As is usually the case, when customers have issues with products, it tends to be due to incorrect use. That’s exactly what happened here. Good for Lorraine for getting put when she did, tho. I’ve been to her salon and its beautiful, albeit very expensive.
I used the Devacurl One Condition around 2004(always bought the liter sizes)when it had the Amodimethicone in it and then they took it out becuz curlies wanted silicone free…so I thought that was crazy taking the silicone out..well it did not work for my hair after the change. My hair likes silicones.
Ulta has their new re-brand products and they have several dozen reviews already, overwhelmingly positive. I was suspicious & read thru them, they were all actually from the Deva Curl site, and available to read on Ulta’s site. I only read thru the reviews for a couple of products & stopped because there was a pattern – many mentioned they were gifted the products, and many followed a similar format, where they described how they use the product, and how great it was.
I used to use Devacurl. I don’t know the level of damage that may have been done because I used it when I first went natural. I have some spots in my hair that always are frizzy and not like other parts of my hair but overall I’m happy it’s not to the level of horror it could have gone to. I would never buy their products because they didn’t seem to care how their products impacted their costumers. They’re also rude to people who complain on their social media pages. I don’t understand how anyone could trust this company and continue to use their products. I’ve heard some people say “ooooh nothing happened to me so I keep using it” but if thousands of people have had issues what makes them think they’ll be the exception… you’re possibly just one bottle away from a mess. 🤷🏽♀️ I won’t be taking that risk. There are tons of other companies with safe hair products and compassion for their customers.
I never experienced any adverse symptoms from devacurl, however, I never used any devacurl products on my scalp. All I used was the wave maker and curl cream. Of course when all of this came out I stopped buying and supporting this company, but I’m still having issues finding something as good as wave maker was on my hair 😕 I’m playing around with the Moroccanoil products now
This article is so important and necessary. Yes plastics release harmful chemicals and they are also seriously harming our environment, human health, and animals. There should be larger efforts to ban the use of plastics. Once created plastic can’t be broken down. We can only recycle what we’ve already created. Plastic particles are breaking down so small and damaging fish and our water systems. The particles are as small as sand. I hope in the future they’re is a reduction of plastics.
It always blows my mind how more people aren’t talking about this. Thank you so much for all the work you put in to educate us. This is truly changing my life, and I am working through what I have in plastic now to eventually replace it all. So scary, and of course always about money. I hope we can get to a point where more products are available in safe packaging and for a more accessible price. I hope some of these changes start happening before something terrible happens.
Very impassioned and informative, Stephanie. I’m absolutely amazed that people are still buying into Devacurl, and mad as hell at the company’s cynical attitude towards consumers. As though repackaging and tweaking formulas, and spouting bullsh*t about being environmentally friendly, and bringing (paid) dermatologists onboard to try to give kudos to the nonsense that they care about damaged hair, even begins to address the damage they themselves caused. Money definitely talks, and that’s why it’s imperative that people educate themselves and speak up for the little people who are just pawns in a billion dollar industry. On a side note, Stephanie, your hair continues to look amazing. Those curls in front are beyond gorgeous, they seem rejuvenated and renewed. Such shiny, curly loveliness x
UGG! I used Deva Curl for about 3 months several years ago. I was noticing that there was so much hair in the shower after I finished washing my hair. When my husband said something to me about the huge amounts of hair, I decided to stop it. Had NO IDEA there was so much going on with this company. And here, I thought I was using a good product on my hair!! I am about to look into your other articles!!!
It’s so hard finding people reviewing the new products. They’re all scared to say something good and then years later it turns out bad, and they lose credibility. They’re scared of the reaction now since the curly hair community is generally not happy about what happened, and since we don’t know the details of the law suits they settled, we can’t really say they compensated the people who got damage fairly. This is the 1st major curly hair brand and they were no1 imo, now it’s going to take time to win customers back, even if the products are perfectly safe.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I purchased product from Ulta Beauty in March and used them for the 1st time yesterday. My hair feels horrible and I’m so disappointed. I called the corporate office to express my concerns and I was told I used the product incorrectly. I’m not going to allow these product o damage my hair. So unfortunate because I’m tied of searching for my holy grail products.
I used Deva curl when it was owned by Henkel, as far as I can guess by my dates used. Never had an issue. Now, wouldn’t this chemical leakage happen with ALL hair products if in plastic? Yes our world is filled with plastics. But the combination between product and package could be happening with everything out there. Why, if this is a chemical reaction with packaging, is this not more wide spread? I’m very curious, I have switched to all bar personal products, if it doesn’t come in glass.
I just bought the new curl bound today then started to look the reviews up and finding a lot of articles like this. This is one of the new ones but I am taking it back not even trying it. I have been on this journey with trying to find my curls. I am 51 am losing my hair due to genetics. I have used Wen and just happen to check that again. I guess that is not helping either because it causes hair loss as well. Is there anything safe for our hair??? So frustrating to try and figure this all out. Glad your hair is doing great, but I have no clue what it looked like damaged. I signed your petition!!
I have a Black stylist who has been using Deva Curl products for years on her clients for years and they keep coming back and they haven’t had issues, so it’s really hard to be able to tell what the truth it. Also so many people do things to their hair that isn’t healthy but they just don’t feel like doing better so, yeah… it’s tricky.
Hi Stephanie. Great vids very informative . Ive been using devacurl for roughly 8 years I think. My hair has not been the same for awhile and I didn’t know what was happening. I just recently heard about all these problems with devacurl and after perusal some articles from different girls I’ve realized that I have the same issues. My biggest concern now is the bald spots I have around the crown. Do you have any advice how to repair that?
It’s so nice to see how your hair has changed since I started perusal you. You actually were the reason I did my own research and reached my own conclusion to stop Devacurl at the time of their downfall. I’m grateful for this because I was very early in my natural hir transition..and they were the only thing I was using at one point. I stopped and have experimented with other brands since. My hair is the healthiest and longest it’s ever been. As curious as I may be to give them a shot, the amount of dedication and care I’ve put in my hair is not worth sabotaging or experimenting on with them again for the sake of curiosity. Thanks for making this article!
I’m really trying to reduce my plastic intake it’s stressful to see it everywhere and I’m such a beauty product junkie my bathroom needs a serious reset! I ordered the sun bath products from away and curly potion to give my shower a reset hopefully they work. 🙏🏼 thank you for posting such researched info. Do you have any skin care products to recommend that isn’t in plastic and baby care products like safe shampoo? Thank you 💖
