Does Sheild Intervene In Spells Requiring Hand Motion?

The text explains that spells can be performed with weapons or shields in one or both hands, and when a hostile creature’s movement provokes an opportunity attack, the caster can use their reaction to cast a spell at the creature. Shields and Hexblades require one hand for casting, but exceptions exist for Hexblade Warlocks.

Spells with both M and S components require a hand free, but there are exceptions. For example, blade spells with M and S components do not require a free hand. If a holy symbol is on a sheild, you do not need a free hand to cast spells with a material cost but no somatic component.

There is an exception to the “you need a free hand” rule when casting somatic spells: if the spell requires a material component, your “free hand” can hold your shield hand. If a spell requires both material and somatic components, you can use your shield hand for both.

Spell casters do not need an open hand 90% of the time, and most spells do not have material components. However, some spells offer superior methods of movement that may surprise your DM.

The text also discusses the rules for material components, allowing for the use of the hand holding the spellcasting focus, such as the shield. Light shields prevent using the shield hand for spellcasting, but light shields and bucklers allow for this.

Somatic components require a free hand to make hand gestures to cast the spell, which is often ignored by most DMs. However, feats like War Caster can help overcome this issue.

  • To anyone who wants to use this build, but doesn’t want it to be as cheesy. You can run stength/int and run the jellyfish shield, and the lance (i use cold affinity with ice spear) and drop the great sheild talismen. Using this, along with golden vow spell, and flame grant me strength, allows up to 80% flat damage boost for you to poke away at bosses with. Still kind of cheesy in a way but i run this with longer range spells and is more of a last resort for bosses i cant get distance from. Hope this helps! ^also possible with the treespear if you’re running faith/strength!

  • Yes this might seem a bit OP but you will struggle with packs of enemies and AoE attacks. For that though, you can use the Dragon Communion Seal (scales with arcane) and use dragon breath attacks like Rotten Breath, Fire Breath, etc and those have a ton of range to deal with packs. Note that if you change the scaling on the ash of war to say, fire, you will block more fire dmg but less physical (not by much but still keep it in mind). And yeah, pretty much end game build, the spear, shield and mask are behind pretty tough enemies. Do get the mask before the spear or you can’t get it

  • Im pretty sure blocking should consume stamina at least proportional to the poise dmg an enemy does, so they need to fix that. Stabbing while guarding has been a thing since ds1 but here in Elden ring seems broken. But yeah to someone that just found this is a thing they may think it requires “no skill” while it actually requires work on the build, patience, timing and stamina management in order to keep an upper hand in pvp. Problem is in Elden Ring theres people maxing stats with exploits and there’s already hackers abusing and tainting this classic build with bad reputation. The real spear and shield players know this build has its flaws and have struggled with them in order to master it and they will also know how to attack without guarding 24/7.

  • Shields even as mighty as the Tombstone of Noobish Frustration are limited to blocking only physical damage with such amazing ease. So spells are free to hit you still, weapon arts with other than pure physical damage type are too. There are at least a couple melee weapons which can ignore blocking such as Cypher Pata and Coded Sword. And of course getting swarmed or double-teamed with a mob or invader behind you negates any blocking. So, like many things in Elden Ring- the more you know…

  • I recently beat the base game and DLC with Serpent Hunter, a +0 Brass Shield and no summons. Aside from Malenia and Radahn, it was a complete cakewalk. And when I got that stone shield you’re using and upgraded it to +25 in NG+, the game became even more of a joke. Even my 2nd fight with Radahn was smooth, on NG+2. I’m not even talking 10 tries. Granted, he took me 10 hours the first time with the Brass Shield, so I knew his moves in and out. A reddit thread brought me here, I assume it was you who tried to convince a guy how OP this build is. But he was probably levelling Dex with a Strength weapon or something, otherwise there is no way this build sucks. In fact, even without summons it was almost as easy as playing magic+summons, which I did a year ago. And in Dark Souls I went with a starting shield and a normal Halberd, that was broken too. But people choose to play the game on hardmode and then think it’s hard. Yeah, no shit. In fact, Elden Ring is the easiest Soulsborne. Simply because of all the options available, the open world, summons and player summons.

  • Great Sheild and spear is match made in heaven But i dont like ash of war on mohg spear its too much animation time. and makes you vulnerable when facing multiple enemies. Plus you have to pump arcane to use that effectively. I use standard great lance with hoarfrost stomp just to give little range to my attack. Elden ring is peace of cake with this combination.

  • I feel conflictedly unhappy. I have never used a big shield in these games. I finally took my Xbox character down the route of this shield because I thought it was thematically cool. I even use the same melee weapon. I even made the shield bleed+madness with the charge. Thought I created a really unique style. Then see a article that says no skill XD. It is fun though.
