The Nittany Lion is the eastern mountain lion mascot of the Penn State University’s athletic teams, known as the Penn State Nittany Lions. Created in 1907, the “Nittany” forename refers to the local Mount Nittany, which overlooks the university. The idea for Penn State’s beloved Nittany Lion mascot was formed on April 20, 1904. As we celebrate the 120th birthday of the “Symbol of Our Best”, we pay tribute to the Nittany Lion.
The Nittany Lion is an ordinary mountain lion (also known as a cougar, puma, or panther), a creature that roamed central Pennsylvania. The name “Nittany” (or “Nita-Nee”) is unclear, but it is believed to be a cougar that supposedly prowled Mount Nittany near the university. Michael McDermott, the Penn State Nittany Lion mascot for the past three years, is honored during Senior Day festivities on Nov. 26, 2022.
The Nittany Lion is a full-time job with plenty of responsibility and plenty of fun. The last person to wear the mask is PSU senior Harrison “Joe” Mason, who made one up on the spot after a trip to Princeton University. The Nittany Lion has made nearly 20 appearances as the mascot, and this week, the Nittany Lion was named to the Mascot Hall of Fame.
In summary, the Nittany Lion is an essential part of Penn State’s tradition and pride, inspired by the mountain lions that once roamed the region. It has rallied crowds at athletic events, welcomed students to campus, and cheered on Penn Staters everywhere.
