Fitbit Collecting Conspiratorial Data?

Fitbit, a San Francisco-based company that makes wearable devices that track steps, heart rate, and sleep, has acquired Fit by Google. Vienna-based advocacy group Noyb has filed complaints against Fitbit in Austria, the Netherlands, and Italy, alleging that the company is violating EU data privacy rules. If Google or Fitbit do break these promises, there could be fines lying in wait. Google has already been found to be in breach of EU’s data privacy rules.

Google and Fitbit insist that allowing Fitbit’s data gathering capabilities to be put in Google’s hands creates major risks of “platform envelopment”, extension of monopoly power, and potential misuse of health and location data for advertising. Following a four-month European Commission investigation, Google agreed not to use health and location data from Fitbit devices for advertising. There is a legitimate concern that the acquisition might lead Google to restrict interoperability between rival watches and its Android ecosystem to target users with ads.

The $2.1 billion acquisition of Fitbit raises questions about data privacy, as Fitbit’s UI and data gathering and statistics are a whole other level and cannot be compared to Fitbit. In 2025, a Google account will be required to use a Fitbit device, but until then, Fitbit will continue supporting your account.

In the United States, the collection of seven or more days of Fitbit data constitutes a search and requires the police to obtain a warrant. Fitbit forces its users to consent to sharing sensitive data without providing clear information about possible implications. Fitbit is removing posts that talk about their fraudulent act and anything to do with group/class action.

A migration process will bind Google accounts with existing Fitbit accounts, allowing users to access their data with new Google login only. FitBit’s data is valuable to any party trying to muscle themselves, but it is not illegal.

Is Fitbit data accurate?

Is Fitbit data accurate?

Fitbit devices, known for their step counting, have been found to have some variations in accuracy, with some discrepancies being considered acceptable. On treadmills, Fitbits tend to underestimate steps, while in real-life scenarios, they often overestimate them. However, these discrepancies are generally considered acceptable. Fitbit’s energy expenditure measurements are less accurate, especially for higher-intensity activities, and it often underestimates distance during faster walking.

Additionally, Fitbit’s sleep tracking aligns with some research-grade tools, but a 2023 study found that the Fitbit Inspire 2 overestimates vital sleep metrics when pitted against the gold standard. The Fitbit Charge does well in cardiovascular health, slightly overestimating VO2 max and heart rate, but becoming more accurate with increased activity.

How accurate is Fitbit sleep data?

The study aimed to improve the reliability of Fitbit devices by comparing them to home environments. The results showed that the accuracy of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep was 59. 1, 83. 7, and 82. 3, respectively. The Fitbit Charge 2 and PSG for shift workers showed similar results, with light sleep accuracy of 0. 49, deep sleep of 0. 78, and REM sleep of 0. 86. A systematic literature review of each Fitbit model showed high accuracy in sleep parameters through EBE analysis.

The study also highlighted the potential of Fitbit devices to measure heart rate and physical activity, indicating a rapid growth trend. The validity of Fitbit devices was evaluated through meta-analysis, revealing that sleep disorders or changes in sleep status can be monitored to predict health. This study confirmed the possibility of using FBI2 and FBI2 as screening tools for sleep stage measurement in daily life.

The advantages of this study include comparing Fitbit and PSG for Koreans, ensuring the sleep characteristics of Koreans were reflected in the same environmental conditions, applying recently standardized criteria for sleep tracking device accuracy, and allowing for adaptation to the laboratory environment.

  • Definitely going to try this tonight. I’ve had my Versa 4 for about 6 weeks now, and in that time it’s only given me detailed sleep data maybe 6 times. Very frustrating. As you say in the article, detailed sleep data is very important to me as well! Edit: I tried it last night and much to my (delighted) surprise, your “hack” worked! This is a wonderful find! My suspicion is that they didn’t design it with enough cache/memory to hold a whole day’s worth of data, and that syncing allows it to flush what it’s storing (including detailed heart tracking) so that when you are sleeping it has enough memory to hold all the details.

  • Thanks! It’s March 23, 2024 and just got a Fitbit Inspire 3. It recorded three consecutive days with 5-hours of sleep before going to bed! Also a suggestion that you minimize showing your right hand gestures so frequently in your next article. Perhaps use the time to show more cuts with close-up views on the app. Appreciated your helpful article and will try it tonight.

  • I find it takes a long time to update sleep data in the morning. I can be awake for an hour before I show any sleep data, usually I have to sync in the morning or restart the app on my phone. I can tell some thing is wrong because the weather doesn’t sync with my watch either. Typically once I can get weather data to show, sleep data also shows up. Maybe it sends data upstream to a data center to process or some thing, and it can take a while to get the data back. I’m not sure.

  • Thank you so much for making this article. I have not tried it yet, but I just finished the syncing, and I am all set to try this tonight. The only reason I really bought this, was to track my sleeping so it is extremely frustrating when I can’t get the information. I am also wondering if anyone knows if it tracks for a 24-hour period because I fall asleep often throughout the day and would like to get an idea of how much sleep I really do get.

  • Appreciate the effort, yet not really any new information. Have a Versa 2 that is very inconsistent and just got a Versa 3 and 4 days and no score at all. Versa 2 sometimes would work if you unpair/pair practically every day, but only other Fitbit CS recommendations are to sleep in certain positions and wear it high like you show. Very disappointed as have Premium and this is a big takeaway.

  • Thanks for doing this, it is appreciated. But no go. Charge 2 stopped working so I bought a Versa 2. Still no go. Not a happy camper. Today I am sorry I own 2 Fitbits that aren’t doing the primary thing I bought them for, tracking sleep. Just get random bars, either device. Even reloaded software on Android phone.

  • anyway to make it work for people who don’t work first shift hours? got this watch after going through a couple others and have found they are designed to only track sleep for early bird schedule. if you work nights and sleep during the day it only registers as napping no matter how many hours you sleep

  • I got a Fitbit Inspire 3 in the past wk. It isn’t tracking sleep properly – so your vid was of interest. I wear it about 1″ above the wrist bone for sleep & have regularly sync’d before going to bed. That matched to your advice. Here’s what mine’s doing…I go to bed around 11:45pm. Get up middle of night. Go back to bed. Have slept all the time surrounding that. Wake up for good b/wn 7:15-8:15am. The Inspire 3 says I have 3 hours of sleep! I can delete that and manually add sleep/wake up times in the app. It contains the other data. But that’s a pain & defeats auto-sleep detect & isn’t accurate tracking… Have you found anything else that works in the past yr with the newer devices to prevent that? Thx for taking the time to make the vid!

  • so i have the problem where it won’t track on my phone but it’s showing up on the website. I can’t take a screen shot cause i don’t know how. Like where the “sleep setting” was, it’s not there AT ALL i did everything from resetting the app, to restarting my phone and talking to fb (They were very un helpful to the point of stupidness) I kept trying to tell them it was them, and not me, but they’re not doing a lick (anything) About it.

  • Thank you My galaxy watch 5 pro BT will drive me crazy . Sometimes it doesn’t detect sleep at all and sometimes it doesn’t detect sleep unless i get up at night for drinking water for example and when I sleep again it works. it occasionally trucks my sleep after 2 or three hours of sleeping but in all cases the stages are innacccuarte. I activated all what is required by the sleep tracking feature, such as blood oxygen during sleeping, snore detection, continuous heart rate tracking… I also reset the watch, cleaned the sensors, and wore the watch well as instructed, upside down but nothing changed. the Samsung Health and the galaxy wearable apps are up to date, the watch is also up to date. My number of steps, heart rate and my sports sessions are always detected correctly. There is only a problem with sleep. I cleared the cache – and restarted my phone and the watch.
