Vilja, a young bard in Skyrim, is taught basic destruction spells and can learn from spelltomes. Once she has learned her first basic spells through her questline, you can teach her more spells by giving her spelltomes. Vilja recognizes spelltomes both from your inventory and can learn more spells by giving them to her.
As Vilja progresses with her quests, she learns a few spells and unique bard chants. The Vilja mod by Emma, with Amgepo and Lycanthrops, is included in the package. In this review, I will discuss Voice Acting, Quests, Dialogue/Character, and a grade from A.
Vilja can only use simple spells for healing and teleporting from the start. You can teach her more spells by giving her spelltomes, and she will eventually learn healing spells as you travel with her. She will even ask you if you want her to heal you, which you can set up through her.
I am stuck on the part where Hlaalu asks you to teach Vilja the lute/lyre. Vilja’s start combat-spell can be used to reset her if something unexpectedly happens or upgrade her storyline. To teach them spells, drop the book/tome and tell them to pick it up. For perks, you must give them to them through the combat section.
You can use the combat section to change the class and then use spells teach to give the follower the spell you have equipped. Vilja has her own mission in Skyrim, but she needs your help. Will you let her tag along and let your Skyrim life be improved?

How do you teach NPC spells in Skyrim?
The text warns users about a temporary IP block due to a large number of HTTP requests. The most common causes include the latest version of the Opera browser sending multiple invalid requests to servers for every page visited, using the Brave browser or Ghostery add-on, which send extra traffic to servers for every page visited, and using GameFAQs regularly with these browsers. Some unofficial phone apps appear to use GameFAQs as a back-end, but they do not behave like a real web browser, triggering anti-spambot measures.
Continued use of these apps may cause IP block indefinitely. The text also warns against using scripts or add-ons that scan GameFAQs for box and screen images, running a “scraper” or “downloader” program, using poorly configured browser add-ons for blocking content, or overusing the search engine with a large number of searches in a short amount of time. If users promise to stop, the connection will be unblocked for now, but they will re-block it if they detect additional bad behavior.

Vilja, a character in the game, is regarded as indispensable in one particular scenario, given that she is unable to die. In the alternative scenario, however, she is not considered essential and requires regular protection due to her association with enemies of Oblivion. Vilja initially uses simple spells for healing and teleporting, but as her quests progress, she learns a range of other spells. You can fine-tune the spells she uses through dialog. In ver 1. 4, you can teach her more spells by giving her spelltomes. Once Vilja becomes a “real bard”, she can use new bard chants that affect the player or enemies and can improve battle tactics. How do you train spells in Skyrim?
In Skyrim, spells are learned by reading Spell Tomes, which are added to the Magic menu and destroyed by selecting a tome from the player’s inventory. Spells are classified by level but can be cast regardless of skill, provided the player has sufficient magicka. Reinforcing magic involves fortifying magicka and increasing the regeneration rate of magicka. Vendors at the College of Winterhold typically offer the full selection of spells up to the player’s current skill level.

She is one of the most detailed followers ever made and in the techinical aspect, it is incredible. But sadly it tries to cram too many functions in one single thing, to the point that it is overwhelming and not clear I would end up scroling her options to find the one specific action that I wanted her to perform. And man, the voice acting, it is not the acent as it was once said because the acent is actually authentic, it is the acting. Then again, back then, 8 years ago, it was not common to employ professional or semi-professional actors for mods. If the dev could make all her functions easier to access and somehow get someone to act all those lines, it could make one of the best mods ever made.
For me, it’s not really the accent, as such; I have considerable respect for anybody who can voice an entire mod in a language that isn’t their mother tongue. Given I can’t speak a word of Swedish, much less do VA for a mod in that language, I’m in no position to throw stones. I’ll also say that Vilja is superbly crafted from a technical standpoint; her creators have done an amazing job. However, in my opinion, it is primarily Vilja’s personality that is off-putting. She’s very high maintenance, too girly, tends to be rather needy, and nags quite a lot. Also, her commentary is often pretty vapid and trivial. I still recall a time when my Imperial-siding Nord had just cleared a fort during the Civil War and was feeling horrible at having slaughtered so many of his countrymen. At this precise moment Vilja piped up: “Do you think I look fat in this outfit?” About thirty seconds later she wanted to know if my character felt she should change the colour of her hair. That was the point where Vilja began spending a lot of time in a house my Nord rarely visited. Of course, this is all extremely subjective, and we respond to these things in very individual ways. Clearly, given the number of people who have endorsed Vilja, many out there like her a great deal. Personally, though, I far prefer Inigo, who, in my opinion, is, hands down, the best follower/party member ever created for a game (vanilla or modded), period. Arissa and Sofia are also exceptionally good.
Unfortunately I must agree that the voice acting is the weakest point (not the actual quality of the voice or the accent). Also, on a personal level I feel her demeanor is very unimmersive. Just being in her company makes it seem as if we’re not so much travelling in a land full of danger so much as we’re strolling through a park on a sunny afternoon. However I think the author and all those involved deserved the recognition for all the effort that went into its creation. I don’t know of any other original companion mods that come close to containing as many features and depth. So, I envy players who can look past the voice acting and enjoy everything else that Vilja has to offer.
I for one will never uninstall this mod… BTW, I love her genuine accent as Emma’s an actual Nord, and considering that both She and the late, great Grumpy pioneered the way companion mods function in the TES series, I will therefore consider most companion mods secondary to Emma’s! Yeah, a bit of a fanboy…I know.
The real fun begin after you start romancing Vilja; you met her family, receive the wolfcry armor from Vilja(she can make a set from wolf pelts), get marryed, have a wedding party; after you and Vilja complete a special quest, her father will make two sets of wolfcry steel armor and two swords —and so other interactions with her family
What I LOVE most about this mod is that she talks to other NPCs. Try questing with her and another follower, like Inigo or a vanilla housecarl. She also talks to your adopted kids. IMO she makes the game seem real. Every other follower (that I know of) just talks to you only. The NPCs added by her questline do sound very bad, but you only have limited interaction with them. I like her voice, I think that accent is sexy (sorry Emma if that sounds creepy, lol)
If you can get past the voice she is the best companion imo best match to Willow in Fallout New Vegas, she is very much aware of where you are if you have her and Lydia it gets really funny as they managed to get the two to talk back and forth even sing together. If you have Frostfall she is really handy since she sets up camp for you.
I did about 30 lines for her. I am happy she did the main role. i would have declined if she asked me to. not because of the line amount ( i have done A LOT for a mod before) but because she deserves it. it is HER mod. in the end if people do not like the voice they can miss out on this wonderful mod. I am happy you like her voice acting . i think it is wonderful.
Wow, I really don’t get the complaints about her voice here. I haven’t played Skyrim yet (just about to purchase it,) but I loved Vilja in Oblivion. For me, having her as a companion really enhanced the game. I had no idea how lonely Oblivion really was as an experience until I added her. I never got tired of her voice in that game.
Thankies. Already have her. I haven’t got to explore her as much though since I reinstalled Skyrim for the umpteenth time. Had some bug with an HD eyebrow mod that took out the ability to change scars, eyebrows, and warpaints… which made it impossible to fix my Viera, or the unwanted pouty-brow face of my Elvaan. But I do remember loving the fact that Cerwiden had to pay me 500 gold to hire my services (win!) She’ll definitely be included in my Solitude guard stories.
I put Vilja through her paces a while ago, did her quests and what not, and I really tried to like her… I love that she has so much contextual dialog, but I can’t stand her voice acting. It’s not even the accent, it’s just the execution and slow droning and dragging of the dialog, line after line. For a lot of it my friend was in the same room playing something else and, after awhile, even he said she was getting annoying to listen to. I get that it’s not professionally done but… Sweet Zombie Jesus, I don’t think I’m ever going to install her again.
OMG can’t stand the voice acting. Seriously though guys this is a bit dated. Try Inigo, Sofia, Hoth, maybe Arissa although, I heard her appearance had to be changed due to copyright, or Mirai who is still being updated but IMO it looks like she may be one of the most three dimensional followers in Skyrim, complete with an amazing story arch still in progress.
This mod not as good as it seems to be. The voice acting is…strange. Like the person who voiced Vilja has bad diction. The quality of voice is awesome but the voiseacting itself…not so much. If you like the Vilja voice this mod will become your favourite. If not, it will be impossible to play because of bad voice.
Note to voice actors: large condenser microphone. don’t use a usb mic like this VA obviously did also, EQ is a thing. she wouldn’t sound so horrible if there was a decent audio engineer or ANY audio engineering to master the lines. it’s extra work but at least people won’t search for articles of the mod just because it’s famously bad and annoying
The voice acting is great. It took a lot of time and work to get together all the extra content. I appreciate that they did this, and the game is better for it. If Bethesda were interested in hiring the modders to make this a DLC addon, fly the voice actors out to their studios for a recording session (and pay them for it) I’d buy the DLC in a heartbeat. So much love went into this, and I hope more people can be thankful as well.
Same!!! Also when I had this mod for Oblivion I thought now it probably has voice acted lines by a real voice actor but no. Emma (the creator) said at the time of Oblivion mod release that she could find nobody to voice act 1000+ lines. I can totally understand this, but hell, it would be rather cool if it hadn’t such a Scandinavian? plain accent.
I know the author gets A LOT of slack for the quality of the voice acting (its mostly the microphone’s fault, let’s be honest), but I find this character to be quite charming. I’ll consider installing the mod, because it’s hard to deny it based on one thing when so much work clearly went into it. It might SOUND low quality, but it’s really one of the most perfected mods out there.
The microphone may not have been fantastic, still it is nice to have more accents. Sort of lacks confidence; I get the feeling this may be reflected in her combat abilities too. This is essentially an evolved FO3: “Amy” for Skyrim. Welcomed, because NV and Skyrim both have needed an Amy of their own. Can’t wait to get rid of the 30,000 “weight” I’ve been carrying. “Here, open your bag of holding, and let’s just dump this in there..” FWOMP! *Crash to desktop.* “Oh dear…”
That much I kinda gathered. Thanks. ^_^ Apparently she’ll be a necessary mod when I do play Oblivion. Can’t play Fallout 3 without Amy. However Amy’s my point of reference for a similar ‘smart’ follower. Now if it weren’t such a pain to make a smart enemy / NPC / follower combo, I’d have my three characters up.
Dude I went back to Skyrim after 3 or so years and started playing with Vilja, after we got past the part of the giant tree I was like “cool so no I guess the bottle thing is done” nope it became the atupidieat fucking fetch quest ever, because not only you have to fetch ingredients, you have to wait for her to fetch “secret” ingredients, then I guess to spend the time you have to help her get her flute but FUUUUUUUUUCK it becomes a run back and forth quest, diary you have to find a kajit caravan, then a kajit in riften then the same woodelf and giant Nord over at Riverrun then a redgard in dawnstar that’s when I just said fuck it and look for a vid about the end of her quest and fuck it is the wettest of fart endings, seriously guys unless you want to just fast travel all over the place or doing meaningless shit, don’t get this mod, specially cause after the novelty wears off, and it wears off real fast, you just want to forget about her for ever
i think it actually gives her character, seeing as mostly everyone in the game share the same voice actors. It also makes sense that she sounds swedish because the game is set in skyrim which is sort of based on the norse countries. Although seeing as she isn’t a huge titted anime bimbo with an annoying cutesy voice the majority of the weirdos on the nexus probably won’t like the mod.
🙂 I am sorry i tend to stick up for any voice actor … it is hard to do.. and many people that could be amazing at it might not voice act anymore because of all the bad comments. I know i stopped for a bit. as long as the modder likes it who cares what others think. If the person tried.. it is good work.
I had Vilja for a time, and liked her, but I absolutely hate her cold, dead eyes (overly dollified companions grate me), and her voice isn’t the best, either. For a similar companion with less features, Anduniel is a little better at both of those. My personal favorite is a tie between Inigo, and Zora from Interesting NPCs, though.
Eh, the voice isn’t really that bad. It’s an acquired taste, at most, I think. It just doesn’t sound like it belongs, the main reason why the only mod followers I have are Inigo(!) and Hoth(and even he was a bit of a stretch). I might download her some other time, mainly because I know she interacts with Inigo. Who knows, maybe she’ll grow on me.
if you do not like it. just do not play. she has a right to voice it. I did voice work for someone one.. they would not let anyone with the smallest accent voice for them. UNCOOL. everyone is different. you have a right not to like her voice. be it the accent or because of the mic. you will just miss out on this wonderful mod.
You can tell that a lot of work went into this mod, but also you can tell that the girl chosen as voice actor is absolutely terrible. You can see at 1:58 that even Lydia is cringing at the voice of Vilja (see the evil look on her face). 1/10 definitely will NOT download. Thanks for the review Brodual, saved me a cringe 🙂
I just found her after all these years and yeah… she’s not my type lol. I don’t mind her voice at all, i think she fits well into Skyrim, her interactions are interesting and add life to towns, inns, etc. But out in the field her dialogue is… not great. It’s jarring af. What i do mind is the fetch quest bs and i can’t change her outfit. . . as much as i’m against degeneracy irl, i’m kind of a f’ing degenerate with mods lol. It’s just pixels right guys? Right? I mean i didn’t download 20 tiddy mods with bodyslide and physics to be stuck with what boils down to a fetch quest simulator in vanilla clothing.
I think she did a wonderful job.none of the actors/actresses in this are professional. people just like to complain. you can give them a mod with no voice and they complain. you can give them one with voice and they still find something to complain about. Trust me she will grow on you. people just need to be happy they got voice at all.
i don’t get it, like all of the people commenting on this page I cant stand her, the voice acting isn’t very good at all and the audio gives me a lot of feedback, yet she is the most endorsed follower on the nexus. why? this isn’t the only article I have seen of her either, any skyrim mod reviewer page has tons of comments about how awful she is, yet shes endorsed more then any other follower? how does that work, if so many people hate her, why is she so endorsed?
everyone who says the voice is bad.. GET OVER YOURSELF. I do not see anyone of you Bitching over the vanilla voices.. ( some are not very good accent wise as well). be happy you get voice at all. i swear…. Vilja sounds wonderful! I love this mod!! She is just wonderful!!. if you want to use the mod but rather not hear her talk so much i was told you can turn off chatter.
