How long does a bottle of essential oil last in a diffuser?
Essential oils in a diffuser last as long as the well runs out of water, and the scent often lingers in the air. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the diffuser stays working at its best and has the longest product life. It is important to clean the diffuser when changing oils, as the oils from the previous use could mix with the oils from the current use, preventing the desired aromatic profile and benefits.
Cleaning instructions depend on the type of diffuser and model, but generally involve emptying the diffuser of any remaining water, wiping out and rinsing the water reservoir to remove oil residue, and letting it air-dry before the next use.

When using essential oils for health concerns, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. Proper dilution is crucial when inhaling essential oils, and it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure a well-ventilated space. Individual responses to essential oils can vary, so it is crucial to pay attention to your body’s reactions and adjust usage accordingly.
Before using essential oils on the skin, perform a small patch test to check for allergic reactions or skin sensitivities. Observe and adjust your usage, and if you experience any adverse reactions, stop using them and seek guidance from your healthcare professional.
In individuals with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the use of essential oils should be considered with a healthcare professional. While some studies suggest that essential oils reduce inflammation, little evidence exists to support their use for anti-inflammatory effects in humans. Some essential oils, like eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender, may have properties that may help with respiratory issues, such as decongestant properties that may ease nasal congestion.
How long should a diffuser last?
Reed diffusers typically last between three and four months, but their longevity can be influenced by factors like central heating, air conditioning, open and closed doors, and dehumidifiers. The temperature of your bedroom is the most significant factor, as warm, cosy spaces can cause the fragrance oil to disperse quickly, reducing its lifespan. To maintain long-lasting, luxurious fragrance, aim for a temperature between 18°C and 24°C. The reeds absorb the oil and diffuse the scent, releasing the fragrance into your bedroom, thanks to their porous nature.
Do diffusers wear out?
A diffuser typically lasts around 4000 hours due to a spinning ceramic disc and small motor. However, the disc wears thin over time, unable to produce the ultrasonic vibration needed for mist creation. The diffuser comes with a 12-month warranty, and most customers enjoy diffusing oils daily. Some reasons why essential oil scents may not last as long as expected include the use of pure essential oils versus fragrance synthetic oils.

Hi. Thanks for the article. One of my bottles still has a good inch or more of diffuser liquid/oil (a jasmine fragrance I bought from Dunelm) but has stopped putting out any fragrance into the room (very small bathroom). I changed the reeds and stirred the oil but it’s still not putting anything out. I thought the liquid would keep putting fragrance out until it all evaporated. Maybe I need to replace the oil?
