Magic Johnson, a former NBA player and businessman, has denied that he contracted HIV from a contaminated Hepatitis B vaccine as part of a study run by Dr. Anthony Fauci decades ago. Instead, he believes he contracted the virus from unprotected sex. In 1991, Johnson announced his HIV diagnosis and retired from the NBA. However, he later returned as a coach and player, and his HIV is undetectable today.
Johnson shared how he contracted HIV from unprotected heterosexual sex and why he decided to go public with the disease. In his 1992 book “My Life”, Johnson wrote that he had sex with multiple women and did not know who infected him with HIV. He also revealed his retirement.
Magic Johnson’s new docuseries, “They Call Me Magic”, airs on Apple TV+ and reveals how his HIV diagnosis affected the star. In 1991, Johnson publicly shared his HIV status, which was a watershed moment for HIV awareness. Though the virus still disproportionately burdens minority groups, Johnson’s life has transformed 30 years after being diagnosed with HIV thanks to antiretroviral drugs and a healthy lifestyle.
In November 2011, Magic Johnson’s interview with FRONTLINE on the 20th anniversary of his HIV diagnosis was published. The former NBA star discussed his relationship with Anthony Fauci and how his HIV diagnosis changed the world.
