That is pretty much the definition of confirmation bias; and if you’ve got confirmation bias going on, your science is at the very least heavily flawed and likely not really science at all.
I think the best argument to use with astrologers is: “if all written knowledge is lost and we start from scratch in a 1000 years, we will arrive to the same astronomical understanding and write the same laws that celestial objects follow. We will never arrive to the same astrological laws, it’s a mythological interpretation of the stars, a story. “

The girl studying psychology sadly represented psychology in a misleading light. Psychology IS based on the scientific method, we DO have theories that guilds our research and these theories and hypotheses are then restructured if they are not supported by evidence. You can see how a lack of understanding of science can literally have you make up anything and correlate it. He has no understanding of gravity causing tides and not the moon having some magical effect on water.
i almost lost it when that one woman said psychology is not rooted by the scientific method – this is absolutely not true. as someone about to graduate with a bachelor’s in the subject, although the field of psychology does have its issues, what we know CAN be backed by empirical research. we know what therapeutical techniques and medications work to improve symptoms of mental disorders because of randomized/controlled scientific trials.

as someone who is studying psychology and therapy, i was so mad when she called psychology a ‘soft science’ and equated it with astrology. astrology is a pseudoscience. psychology does have a long way to go compared to other sciences, but that’s only because it’s new. not because it’s, in any way, similar to astrology. someone with their mind-set studying therapy and being a future therapist scares me.
As someone in a scientific field, this made me believe in astrology even less than I already did. Science isn’t really up for interpretation unless a study makes an inaccurate causal-effect relationship or the study itself is faulty. When something becomes highly interpretative, and gets even “more nuanced” the deeper you get into it, you can never really be wrong. The one woman even said herself that if her client says she’s wrong, she basically just finds a different way to interpret her reading so that it’s correct. That’s a completely faulty line of logic.
These astronomers didn’t stand their ground enough and allowed the astrologers to say things that just aren’t true. Psychology is a science. Also, they should’ve brought up ideas such as nature vs nurture to explain how people get their personality, not charts and celestial bodies. They both try to describe and predict personality, behaviour etc. Astronomists and astrologists are trying to do completely different things. Astronomists have nothing to do with describing personality or behaviour. They try to figure out the physical attributes of celestial bodies.
As a licensed mental health counselor, having psychology be compared to astrology as a “soft science” irked me. Can we not lump someone reading the Sunday funnies and having their “sign” tell them that they’re going to have a nice weekend in with the extensively researched experimental behavioral psychological field? The astrologists’ answers make me think of the term “illusory correlation”, drawing conclusions on part of the data, which when taking all data into account could no longer be supported. I remember perusal a article on how personality tests, and astrology and these things don’t mean squat bc they’re just so broad they could fall into practically anyone, there was an experiment where a teacher created a personality test for his 50 students, and stated that they can’t tell anyone about the results, and then were asked if the results were accurate, somethnig like 80% said yes, but the kicker was that they were the same results for everyone
Astrology seems to work because the description of each sign is so broad that it becomes almost impossible to avoid coincidences. There’s a greater probability for these qualities and characteristics to apply to you than for them to be wrong about you. Also, I think sometimes when we read something about our personality, (especially if it’s a positive quality and mostly it is) we subconsciously try to be like what we read and convince ourselves that it’s true.
The Moon doesn’t cause tides because it has some weird relationship with water, its just that the gravity of the moon is acting upon the entire earth and large masses of land aren’t as moveable as bodies of water. the fact that the astrologers keep on using the words: “interpretation” and “symbolizes” says it all. I think we should just keep in mind that at the end of the day we are just humans who are so fixated in finding meaning in life and find something we can believe and cling our faith on. And all these doesn’t have to be scientifically proven but because you already believe in it and you have your faith in these “meaning”… then it will always fee right. But then may we also remember that what is right and what is true are not the same. Astrology is a guide and the feeling of being constantly guided will always feel right. While Astronomy is science and it will always be true.

Astrology is definitely not a science, but it is fun to study and look at, and if it makes you happy, there’s no problem with it. But paying people to “read the stars” is definitely a scam. I like looking at star signs and zodiacs for myself cause it’s fun and it looks pretty and aesthetic but the people who make money off “reading the stars” to make predictions is ridiculous.
