How to calculate time of death in Vedic astrology?

In the Brihat Jataka, Varahamihira explains that death occurs in places similar to the rasi occupied by the lord of the navamsa, in which birth falls. The time of death is identified by the unrisen number of navamsas in the birth. If the birth lord aspects it, the time must be doubled; aspected by benefics, the time will be trebled.

Narayanan Nambutiri, the author of Prasna Marga, states that the total bindus (before reduction) in Saturn’s Ashtakavarga from the lagna to the sign occupied by Saturn and from the sign occupied by Saturn to the lagna indicates the age when the native will be attacked by disease or misfortune. The total of these figures also indicates the age of troubles. If the end or beginning of a malefic dasha coincides with the age represented by these three figures, then death may take place.

To determine the time of death, multiply the Sodya Pinda of Saturn by the bindus in the 8th house from Saturn in his own Ashtakavarga, divide the product by 27. When Saturn transits the nakshatra represented by the remainder or trinal nakshatra, then death may take place. Multiply the bindus in the sign occupied by Jupiter or the Sun in Saturn’s Ashtakavarga by Saturn’s Sodya Pinda and divide the product by 12, the remainder will be the sign transited by Jupiter or the Sun respectively at the time of death.

Body temperature, rigor mortis, and livor mortis are important factors in determining the time of death. Dr. Alexandre Lacassagne, a French physician, extensively studied these concepts. Normal body temperature is 98. 6 degrees Fahrenheit, and after death, the body loses or gains heat until it equilibrates with the surrounding medium. The search for a formula to define the time of death has been ongoing, with studies by John Davey in 1839 and T. K.

  • I was able to recover my identity of who I was in my last lifetime. When compared to the D-12 in my current life, I found that the Dwadasamsha chart was and is an accurate reflection of my previous life at that time! I also have another case of a client who recovered his identity in his previous lifetime. Again when compared to the D-12 chart, the findings also revealed life events that paralleled the chart characteristics! Spooky!!!

  • My Dwadasamsha chart is an accurate representation of what I did in my last life. I was very fortunate to learn the identity of myself in my previous life and I was able to research the experiences I had during that time. And low and behold the revelation I had when I fully understood the gravity of seeing my ‘past life’ playing out in a Divisional Chart, namely the D-12!

  • My D-12 chart reveals my last incarnation practically to the letter! After discovering my “previous identity,” I went on to learn that much of my “last life” was a repetition of my current life! I make the same choices, I chose the same women, I make the same mistakes! The D-12 In my opinion is “Gospel!”

  • Very nice Joni. Respectfully, you’re missing out on one caveat. Ramas when he went off to India denounced LSD. He was not an advocate. Timothy Leary was the advocate in America turn on Tune in dropout. Ramdas went to India and gave a handful of LSD to a yogi and the yogi ingested all of it large amount and it had no effect on him. At that point Ramdas knew the true path was not through drugs.

  • In D1 my sun is in the 2nd house of cancer with Mercury but in the d12 my sun was in Libra. And it was in the 8th house with ketu in my D12. What’s weird is my moon in the D1 chart is in libra in the 5th house but in Aries in the 2nd house with Rahu In D12. And I am a Gemini rising in d1 with mars but a Pisces rising with Venus and Mercury in D12. And Venus is my atmakarka in this life.

  • Thank you Joni! I’ve read somewhere, perhaps on Saptarishi Astrology, that a planet in strength in the 6th house of the Dwadashamsa chart indicates a more advanced soul incarnating into a less evolved family unit to help that soul group evolve more quickly. I wonder if anyone else has heard this or experienced it in their studies.

  • Thank you for the teaching, Joni. I have my Dawadashamsha chart, but I have no idea about its meaning. The ascendant, Venus and Jupiter are on the first house, in the second sign of Taurus. Both the Sun and the Moon are located on the forth house, in the sign of Leo. Ketu and Saturn are both on the 11th house, in the sign of Pisces.

  • Dear Joni, in all probability to chart this question would simply take too much time, but I will pose this question regarding two lives, eternally together as husband and wife. There are very few, less than few, souls created as husband and wife. There are the two birth dates, but only one time of birth is known. That birth time of one is the birth date of the other. Husband: August 1, 1942 Wife: January 1, 1957 Birth time: 8:42AM (Aug ’42) The spiritual bodies of both are together, for what God has joined together let no man or evil set asunder. Perhaps stemming from lifetimes ago might you suffer to reveal outstanding causes of the physical separation? Being aware of this virtual impossibility, I will always remain Eternally Grateful. Thank you and God bless you.

  • Oh i also have Neptune & Sun conjunct in 9th in high degrees of sagittarius. And ketu conjunct venus moon and mercury and mc. Could it be?? This life tough and lonely, as if its learning this life is all about being vulnerable and aplying knowledge in 1 to 1 contact with people…i know all is well, but living that way is a road of learning and allowing and loving.
