This video demonstrates how to open pump bottles for shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and more. To open a stuck shampoo pump, follow these steps: 1) Remove the old pump, 2) Clean the bottle by removing any remaining shampoo and rinsing it, and 3) Insert the end of the pump into the opening.
To use a shampoo pump, unscrew the top of the bottle and insert the pump into the opening. Put your hand over the end of the pump and turn it. For example, if you’re using an argan oil shampoo, hold the small section between the pump head and the part that screws on to the bottle with small needle nose pliers and twist the pump head right with your hand.
The video also discusses how to open a Moroccan Oil Shampoo Bottle on TikTok. Hold the fat part of the pump stem gently with pliers, then twist the top in the direction of the “open” arrow. After several turns, the top should pop up and you can enjoy your product. This method can be applied to shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and more.

📹 EASY WAY TO OPEN A LOTION PUMP BOTTLE
Have you had difficulty opening the pump on a lotion pump bottle or a cleanser pump bottle? I tried two methods that worked for …
I could not open the pump even after turning the cap multiple times.. what worked for me – I aligned the closure and locking ring based on a vertical line available on both. Then I hold the locking ring tight and turned thr cap again, and it worked!! So try to rotate the ring to different positions and it may work for you
After a broken finger nail and sore finger joints I had to get my tool box, used an actual nail and pincers…. and after another 10 minutes of an it’s-either-me-or-you-pump-battle…. it miraculously opened. I still don’t know how though, or how to open that thing gracefully the next time. I used brute force 🤷♀
The fact that I had to Google a way to open those pump bottles is very aggravating. I don’t know if this is for a particular brand or just a style of pump, but the fact that we have to actually look at a article to open a bottle. Why don’t they make them easy to open. I understand locking them to transport and everything, but it should not take 10 minutes and bleeding fingers and looking at a article in order to open a bottle. Whoever invented this style of pump should be punished in some way I can’t think of at the moment. I did just spend 10 minutes twisting the bottle top around and around and around and around. No lock ring to hold on to no reason at all that I can tell the why it was still locked. I have the same problem not long ago with a shampoo bottle of Head and shoulders. I wound up getting rid of that pump and finding an old one that was already unlocked. It is absolutely ridiculous that we have to go through all of this just to open up a shampoo or soap dispensing bottle. I’m just ranting right now.
My gf bought a bottle of renpure conditioner. I will say this. Probably some liberal in the marketing dept thought it would be super progressive to go back to the 1800s and market this type of dispenser. Why dont we just get rid of starters on cars and go back to the manual crank? Or maybe use swamp coolers instead of central heat and air?
Wow this article is way too long. Step 1: Tighten the cap of the bottle so it’s not loose. Step 2: Grip the middle ring tightly with non-dominant hand. (use a dishtowel for grip if needed) Step 3: Use dominant hand to twist the pump counter-clockwise until it releases. Step 4: Congratulate yourself for having saved a minute of your life perusal this article AND being able to access your soap/etc.
The problem with this pump: the direction you turn the pump to unlock it is the same as the direction you turn the cap to undo it. Since it takes more force to open the pump than to open the cap, I kept opening the cap, and when I’d screw it back down it tightened the pump even more. In the end I had to use a pliers to hold the pump lock ring while turning the pump. Solution: have the pump unlock in the opposite direction. That way turning the pump will tighten the lid, and make it easier to unlock the pump.
And I’ve always thought that it was ME that was defective because I couldn’t open a simple pump bottle! Holy smokes, after seeing all these comments, it’s obvious that it’s the PUMPS that are defective! My question to the universe is WHY??? Honestly…there is clearly a problem with many of the pumps that these companies are using. I’ve gone from annoyed before I watched this article, to infuriated that it’s such a widespread issue. 😡 But THANK YOU for offering a solution. At the moment I don’t have a pump that requires safe cracking methods, but when the next one finds its way into my house, I know how to win the battle. 😈
After twisting the pump exactly 1,476 times, banging the bottle on the countertop at least forty-eleven times, yelling various and sundry creative but apparently useless insults at the bottle, and almost calling 911 for nearly bursting an artery, I waved the white flag and put it aside. After a week or so, the heavens opened, the moon and the stars smiled upon me and beamed a marvelous epiphany into my weary soul. “Consult YouTube,” the heavenly orbs implored. Thank you from the very bottom of my humble and grateful heart. PSA – Option two for the winner.
You are seriously my hero…I’ve been drizzling product from the pump shaft of 2 products for maybe 2 weeks till I was like, hey, why not, YouTube tells you everything? And both pumps are open within like 5 seconds each. Holding the shaft with a wash cloth after washing and drying it probably helped too. (The fact that I actually need a hero for this is a bit tragic, but nonetheless, you are that hero.) 😊
My wife bought a bottle of lotion and tried for 2 days to open it . Finally she asked me to try it. I worked on for 5 minutes and nothing happened. I look up your article and in 30 seconds, Voila. It popped open. I still haven’t told her how easy it was. It’s nice to have the upper hand for a few minutes. Thanks for the help.
I think I watched at least a dozen articles, called 15 friends, took it to a neighbor. Not a clue. But YOU!!! Had bought a few dozen hand sanitizers for others and NONE of them opened, store wouldn’t take back, etc., etc., yada, yada. The 2nd way ABSOLUTELY WORKED. Thank you for taking care of my anger 🙂 🙂
Glad I found this! So yes, the rinsing works. What I did after rising and drying was to hold the neck using pliers, in order to get a good grip, and it popped right up. Thank you. I faced this exact same thing a few days ago with another product, and my “solution” was I had another new bottle of the same stuff, so I popped that new one open (glad it wasn’t;t the same problem) and switched out the tops. Thanks so much for this.
Plan B worked beautifully and without washing and drying the inner workings first. Just grabbed a paper towel and held the tube firmly near the top and twisted the pump in the indicated direction and voila! A dry washcloth or dishcloth would work just as well as the paper towel. Thanks for the original tip!
The second method worked for me when trying to open the Nexxus pump shampoo bottle. Took the top off the bottle, dried off the top part of the inside and turned the spout counterclockwise and it worked like a charm. I agree that you shouldn’t have to do this to get the darn thing open, but at least it won’t accidently open and make a mess when transporting it home.
Wow, where have you been all of my life? I can’t believe it, the 2nd option worked for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to checking out your other articles and definitely subscribed to your website. Thank you again!😀 P.S. I have arthritis so used pliers to hold tight beneath the pump, twisted the pump to the left and badda-bing-badda-boom!!!
Thank you! I had a bottle of Olay cleanser and I could not get the pump to pop up. Ended up unscrewing tge whole thing and using the tube to dip out of the bottle. Not ideal. After I finally used that up I got another one and had the same problem. Was cursing these defective pumps. But I just tried your solution and it worked!🎉
This has happened to me quite a few times in the past. This time was so frustrating that I was ready to throw out the brand new bottle. The first method did not work, but the second one did. Washing the tube and top and, well, I couldn’t wait for it to dry so I grabbed it with a towel so it wouldn’t slip through my fingers. And poof ! the top snapped out and it works fine now. ” Cookiedog” Thank you for the solution ! …. I knew if I googled it the quick fix would be out there somewhere… lol
Thank you. The second thing worked. Though I still find myself annoyed that they had to change how they made these bottles in the first place. Do they like to frustrate people and make them feel stupid? Why couldn’t they just keep making them as they used to? But at least we have you tube to look up stuff like this so we can find a way to overcome their stupid fixes to what didn’t need fixing.
TIP: You can also get additional grip on the pump to better loosen it by cleaning and completely drying the tube and then holding, with your left hand, the bottom part firmly with a rubber jar opener while turning the pump counter clockwise. The additional grip the rubber gives helps tremendously with a real stubborn pump that doesn’t want to open!
not lotion here but i bought reusable soap bottles with this and omg thanks sooo much to this article. I HATE these types of locks, it makes it so hard to unlock them. youre supposed to hold that little thing thats under the pump down to unlock it, but its such a thin slot idk how they expected you to do it, best way to do it pretty much the easy way is to do the way you did it
Thank you!!! I didn’t rinse off the pump because it was in an expensive shampoo and conditioner. Of course the pumps were packaged separately and I should have opened them before I screwed them into the product. Anyway…I used a needle nosed pliers to hold the white inside part and turned and popped right up! How did I get to be this old and still have trouble with these things for over 40 years. Thank you!
