How Tootsie Pop Chose Mr. Owl As The Mascot?

In 1968, Tootsie Pop introduced Mr. Owl to the world in a new campaign featuring a cartoon owl. The creative team at Doner brought the character to life, and the ad was later shortened for 30 and 15-second spots. The ad featured a boy asking various animals, including cows, foxes, turtles, and an owl, the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a lollipop.

Over the years, the Tootsie Pop commercial has undergone several changes, with the introduction of a new mascot in the 1980s. Paul Winchell, a ventriloquist, doctor, inventor, and friend of the company, voiced Mr. Owl in the iconic Tootsie Pop commercial. The owl became a symbol of female empowerment and independence, and later became the mascot for Tootsie Roll Pops.

After the commercial, Mr. Owl became the mascot for Tootsie Roll Pops, appearing in marketing campaigns and on packaging. Researchers at New York University discovered that Mr. Owl wears a graduation cap because he has a BA in hotel management from Rice University. The owl decided to run an experiment, licking the lollipop once, twice, and finally, biting into the boy’s lollipop.

Mr. Owl is a certified Tootsie Pop expert and can be redeemed for a lollipop. He starts counting aloud on his wingtips, unlike the original commercial where he counts to three before biting into the boy’s lollipop.

  • Actually the Tootsie Pop commercial will just make me forever think of the Nostalgic Critic commercial episode where the question was, “WHY THE HELL IS THIS BOY NAKED? Nobody addresses this? Even the turtle, when he first comes out, is like… What the fuck? Put on some clothes, boy! I can see your junk!” LOL!

  • Oh my word, To sexy? according to who’s view point? Cause in a few years Yellow will be the sexiest M&M . My point is beauty(sexy) is all in the eye-of-the-beholder. The ones at M&M who made this choice really need to take an inner look at themselves if they thought Green and Brown were to sexy and those who complained about them need to take a look at why they took time out of their day to do so, and at why they think “sexy” is a bad thing?

  • Ok I’m 49 years old and seeing you do those vignettes from when I was a kid was fantastic. When I was in elementary school ( ages 5-11), I actually did a science fair project on this EXACT concept. How many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. With some ‘help from adult sources’, we used 3 examples, One was just a wetted sponge going back and forth over a Pop, using weights and pulleys to keep it in motion with little kinetic loss, one was an adult start licking it, and one was a kid ( myself) lick one until we got to the center. I still have my results; Thank to Mom for never throwing stuff out and a wealth of attic memories. Sponge : 108 total passes til center Adult Tongue: 161 Total passes til center Kid Tongue :172 Total passes til center. This was in 1979 mind you so Your results may vary. Guess they were just slightly tougher back in my day.

  • Hey MatPat, great content… Keep up the good work. I was wondering if u could explain why Cadbury eggs stuck with the Easter commercial after previously using multiple gimmicks in their ads. I’m 41 and remember (vaguely) that it was kind of a implied joke or message that Cadbury eggs weren’t your average chocolate candy

  • -I should have known. I thought the turtle said TWO (in an operatic way) differently than the original commercial I remember. -“Say, ‘From Charms'” “What?” “Cut, cut.” That was one of my favorites. And I loved the the accented way “Mentos, the fresh-maker.” was said in. -CommercialsSins found the original extended version of the Tootsie Roll Pop commercial and kindly sinned it for us. It was perfect nostalgia. You asked, “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.” The commercial asked, “How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. ” You won’t want to get to the very center, just to the outer edges of it. -Hey University of Wisconsin got close to the same number you did! -I hope technique was taken into consideration. If you only lick the pop without rewetting your tongue, it will take longer. So, only guy on your team of Theorists won’t get as good a number because his tongue is drying out by staying out of my mouth between licks, where as the other guy is rewetting his between licks.
