Magnus Lightwood-Bane, an immortal warlock, is the husband of Alec Lightwood and the first High Warlock of Alicante. Despite being ill for some time, Magnus pretended to be fine and continued using his magic to help the Blackthorns. The midseason finale of “Shadowhunters” season 3 featured a strained relationship between Magnus and his boyfriend, Alec.
Magnus was hired by Jocelyn Fray to erase Clary Fray’s memories of seeing anything related to the Shadow World. He designed it so that Clary would begin drawing the Angelic rune when the Shadow World was destroyed. In Edom, Asmodeus agreed to give Magnus the power to defeat Lilith, but only if Magnus sacrificed his magic to him. Magnus returned to Earth to witness Jace stab Alec and used his father’s power to break Lilith’s hold but was unable to heal a dying Alec who was healed by another.
Alec managed to give Magnus his immortality back in exchange for his own magic, rendering Magnus powerless after saving Jace. The episode starts on a gloomy note, but the cost was severe. Magnus seeks out Brother Zachariah to erase all his memories of Alec, which is a serious matter that Zachariah speaks about.
The alcoholism of Magnus keeps getting worse as he loses his magic too and feels useless without it. He tries borrowing magic from Lorenzo, but it was a selfless act, and he already regrets it. Immortals are meant to grow wrinkled in grey, and in time, Magnus will come to resent Alec.
In conclusion, the midseason finale of “Shadowhunters” season 3 features a strained relationship between Magnus and Alec, as well as the potential consequences of losing his magical abilities.

That look in Magnus’s eyes at the end…! Losing his magic once was unbearable to him. Having it taken away a second time… I’m not sure he can take it, as strong as he is. :,( He’s NOT going to be okay, not really, until he gets his magic back. This feels like the beginning of a downward spiral when it comes to his mental health.
Lorenzo says that he can’t give Magnus another transfusion and I don’t think it’s because he’s not the biggest fan of him or because of the whole transfusion itself. I think it’s because Alec can’t lose Magnus and he was touched by Alec and how much he cares for Magnus. But he doesn’t want to show that, so he acted the way he normally does. Idk… I read into things a lot 😅
