In “Dark Phoenix”, Raven, a character from the Marvel Comics, was crucial to the team’s formation. Her death in 1992 marked a turning point in the movie, as it resulted in the formation of the two main characters, Mystique and Raven. Despite timeline changes, Mystique could still be alive, as a shapeshifter.
In the second trailer for Dark Phoenix, Jean Grey succumbs to her overwhelming power and kills one of the franchise mainstays, Jennifer Lawrence’s character Mystique. Many fans were surprised and confused by the second trailer, which confirmed the long-teased death of one of the X-Men. Writer/director Simon Kinberg insists on the loss of Mystique.
Mystique confronts Wolverine, who stabs her with his claws, killing her. Lord Deathstrike collects Mystique’s body and auctions it off, selling it for 5 million to a group of ninjas, possibly agents of The Hand. Mystique’s decision not to shoot Bolivar Trask created a new timeline where she stays with the X-Men and trains them but is ultimately killed by Jean/Phoenix.
After a heated fight, Wolverine manages to wound Mystique, but he chooses to deny her the mercy blow. Instead, he drops a gun and leaves in the sunset, leaving Mystique alive.
In Mystique’s timeline from Avengers Forever, it appears that she has moved on to another partner who wears a mask. Mystique (Raven Darkholme) is a personage from Marvel Comics and was known by Chris Claremont. With Destiny dead, Mystique was marked for death by the villainous Shadow King, who saw Mystique as a threat to his plans.
Dark Phoenix killed Mystique early on in the movie, but it was completely mishandled. Wolverine left her alive after a long battle, though he spared her life. Rogue attempted to stop Mystique’s mother, but Mystique stabbed her in the stomach once she knew that Rogue would not allow her plan to be completed.

How does Frenchie die?
Frenchie, a supporter of Butcher’s war on superheroes, dies in an explosion with the Female by his side. The epilogue series Dear Becky adds context to this, revealing Frenchie’s early suspicion of Billy Butcher. She predicts that Butcher would violently turn on his teammates if it suited him. In Dear Becky, the first incarnation of the team team deals with the Children of Stormfront, who are supes.
Butcher plants a listening device to monitor his conversations, and Frenchie and Mother’s Milk object to Butcher’s flouting of Mallory’s procedures. Frenchie’s unease signals that he knows Butcher would be willing to kill him. However, Frenchie’s instincts were correct, and Butcher’s story turns out to be a dark foreshadowing of his final fate.
How does Starlight die in the comics?
Starlight and Homelander are enemies in The Boys comics, but they do not die in the series. Queen Maeve saves Starlight from Homelander’s wrath, leading to Homelander killing Queen Maeve and Black Noir later killing The Seven’s leader. Starlight’s story in The Boys comic ends happily, as she and Hughie start a new life together. It is difficult to believe that Starlight will die in The Boys season 3, as the comics signal that she should survive the series and make Erin Moriarty’s superhero an even better character.
Prime Video has confirmed that The Boys season 4 is happening, and it would be surprising if that happened without Starlight. There is always the possibility that The Boys season 3 might kill Starlight to deliver a major surprise to viewers and comic readers, but it is not easy to imagine that happening in a satisfying way. Instead, The Boys season 3 and beyond will have to get creative in figuring out why Homelander and Vought will not keep Starlight quiet permanently.
Is Mystique Charles Xavier’s sister?
Raven Darkholme, also known as Mystique, is a former member of The Brotherhood Of Mutants and a mercenary working for the C. I. A. She is Magneto’s oldest Brotherhood companion and former lover, and the mother of Nightcrawler, Kurt Wagner. Born in 1934, Raven Darkholme has a physical mutation that has caused her to become hateful and use shapeshifting to survive. She can take any form she wants, imitating both physical appearance and voice, as she already has this mutation by the time she meets Charles while taking his mother’s form.
Who did Mystique have a baby with?
Mystique had multiple offspring with Sabretooth, including Graydon Creed, Nightcrawlee, Raze Darkholme, Charles Xavier the II, Gloria Brickman, and Rogue. These children were subsequently adopted by Irene Adler.
How was Mystique killed?
Wolverine, who has returned from hell and retrieved his possessed body, targets Mystique after discovering she was responsible for sending his soul to the Red Right Hand. Mystique is shot by Lord Deathstrike and is later found dead by Wolverine. Lord Deathstrike auctions off Mystique’s body, which is sold for 5 million to a group of ninjas, who are believed to be agents of The Hand.
Mystique is revived as Sabretooth at Los Angeles International Airport, agreeing to assist the Hellfire Club in their destruction of the Jean Grey School. She is now able to change her scent to match her forms.
Receiving news that the original X-Men are in the present day, Mystique manipulates Scott Summers to believe she has the best interests of both X-Men and mutantkind. She uses Lady Mastermind and Sabretooth to commit robberies and frame the X-Men. Viper shows up, and Mystique explains she wants to buy Madripoor from HYDRA and control crime in the area. The X-Men raid the place before completing the transaction. Lady Mastermind and Mystique are captured, but Mystique escapes in a S. H. I. E. L. D. helicopter.
Is Mystique dead after Dark Phoenix?
Director Simon Kinberg confirmed that Mystique has died in the X-Men movie, stating that the decision to show her death in the trailer was to highlight the uniqueness of the film, which is known for its shocking and intense events. Kinberg emphasized that the movie is a reality-driven, dramatic one, with Jean/Dark Phoenix posing a threat to everyone, including the X-Men. He acknowledged that the decision to show Mystique’s death was a tough one but deemed it the most dramatic aspect of the movie.
Does Mystique come back to life?
Mystique, once known as Sabretooth, is seen alive again at Los Angeles International Airport, assisting the Hellfire Club in their destruction of the Jean Grey School. This revival is seen in various Marvel comics, including Ms. Marvel 16, Ms. Marvel 18, Brotherhood of Mutants, X-Men, Astonishing Avengers, Chevaliers training squad, Dark X-Men, DARPA, Freedom Force, Marauders, Mossad, The Hand, X-Corps, X-Factor, Lethal Legion, Hellfire Club, Weapon X-Force, Wolverines, S. H. I. E. L. D., Mutant Task Force, Magneto’s X-Men, and Quiet Council of Krakoa.
Why is Mystique immortal?
Mystique, a character in the X-Men series, is compared to godhood due to her ability to self-sexual reproduction and spontaneous generation. Her genetic mastery also implies immortality, allowing her to reset the age of her cells. However, the X-Men have confirmed that Mystique’s power level is just short of divine, and her lack of interest in developing her powers is the only obstacle to true godhood.
Does Mystic lose her powers in the comics?
Mystique’s life is torn apart as the U. S. Government uses their intel on her to destroy all of her alternate identities and prevent her from accessing any of the money she and Destiny had hidden away. This leads to Mystique losing self-control, powers, and freedom, causing her to lash out at everyone around her. Rogue, Mystique’s stepmother, feels the brunt of her stepmother’s wrath, and their relationship soured when Rogue refused to tell Mystique that the X-Men were going to fight the High Evolutionary to restore everyone’s powers.
The X-Men defeat Evolutionary and allow Mystique to escape jail. However, Mystique faces her biggest fears when Raven is sent back in time by the original X-Factor’s sentient ship. She finds herself in a great time paradox, with a time delay weapon she was about to program to kill Graydon. Mystique’s sanity is further damaged by the revelation that her lover and soulmate Destiny was part of the anti-mutant conspiracy Mystique had dedicated countless years to fighting.
Raven becomes nihilistically obsessed with death and genocide, reforming the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants for another assassination attempt on Senator Kelly and kidnapping Moira MacTaggert to access her research on the Legacy Virus. Mystique’s insanity and experience with bio-terrorism allowed her to create a biological weapon that would infect humans instead of mutants and come up with a cure for the Legacy Virus after reading her doctor’s research.
How does mm die in comics?
The character of Marvin T. “Mother’s Milk” Wallis, also known as M. M., is a character in the comic series “Supes” alongside The Female. His mother was dosed with the superpower-inducing Compound V while pregnant with him, leading to her mutating into a Cthulhu-like creature and him becoming the first naturally-born Supe. To survive, M. M. requires continued consumption of his mother’s Compound V-enhancing “mother’s milk” on a semi-regular basis. He later rises to become heavyweight champion of the world following his military career, becoming Butcher’s second-in-command/best friend over years of missions.
M. M. learns that Butcher plans to kill all Supes and potential Supes, including him and his daughter. After confronting Butcher over this, M. M. is smothered to death by Butcher to prevent him from interfering with his plan. To avenge her son, M. M.’s mother gives Hughie the necessary milk to kill Butcher.
The character is portrayed by Laz Alonso in the Amazon Prime Video streaming adaptation, while Elias Leon Leacock portrays a young Marvin in the third season. In the television series, M. M. joins Butcher and the reformed Boys in exposing the existence of Compound V and taking down Stormfront in the first and second seasons. In the third season, a now-divorced M. M. rejoins the Boys as they attempt to take down Victoria Neuman and the Homelander, coming to odds with Butcher over his use of V-24 and partnership with a still-alive Soldier Boy (Homelander’s father).
M. M.’s lactophiliac tendencies are adapted to Homelander (portrayed by Antony Starr) and his status as the first naturally-born Supe is adapted to Ryan Butcher (portrayed by Cameron Crovetti). The character has received a positive critical reception.
Why does Mystique not age?

Her powers include slowed aging, revitalizing cells and DNA memory, immunity to drugs and poisons, and healing minor wounds. She is skilled in combat, marksmanship, and acting, and is fluent in German, English, Czech, Farsi, French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish. Oh my gosh thank you so much! You’re probably one of the only few websites that covered this character. I found it to be quite a shame that she isn’t talked about seemingly enough, but that’s why I really appreciate this article along with your website. You really went in depth with her and even talked about all if not most of her time the comics and I haven’t seen that anywhere else on YouTube before lol. But yeah thank you so much, the article and the work you put in is amazing.
Very Enlightening! In the movies, it appears that Rogue is the daughter of Mystique, but Rogue is adopted and Nightcrawler IS the son of Mystique. WOW!!! I love the X-MEN comic series, but I never knew this! I wonder if a new X-MEN/Origin movie will ever be made to show any of these events? And how about a movie with the X-MEN vs The Avengers?
This article has made me realize how truly gay coded Rogues vibes are She was kicked out by her family for kissing someone and then she got taken in by a lesbian couple who loved her and raised he. Then she ended up with the lemme give a quote from him “Gambits everyone’s gay awakening chere”. Like she’s got a lot more happening but the nines for this metaphor are so good.
The part of mystique giving birth to Kurt makes way more sense than his new origin of destiny being his mom and mystique his dad. There were actual people there who saw it so how the hell did they just change it out of the blue. Plus he looks just like Azazeal with the same power set. Now she is just mimicking his physiology to give birth. It just makes no damn sense. To me it sounds like they are trying too hard to be progressive and the original writer claims that this was what he wanted all along comes off as fake. Everything doesn’t need a retcon.

If we ever get Mystique in the MCU, they should bring in Destiny. Destiny is a very interesting character in terms of her prophecy and how it’s used. In the short term, it looks like she’s doing some of the most heinous stuff eg working with Sinister in the 40’s. However, that work helped create his gene library, allowing him to use it on Krakoa. And she sees all possible futures. Legion didn’t kill her because she was in his way. He killed her because he looked into her mind and it terrified him.
I’ve been a comic lover and collector for over 35 years. articles like this take me back to when story was important over some hack political or social agenda. I will continue to watch these and maybe even go to a digital comic website to read some of the comics and series I don’t have. Thanks for sparking nostalgia in characters I grew up with and love dearly.
Gunslinger, activist, DARPA agent, terrorist, government agent, why in the hell has no one thought to give Mystique her own show? I mean she could be anyone for God’s sake, all you have to do is have an MCU character knock out Mystique, instead of a Skrull, and that’s one hell of a way to kickoff mutants.
The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants lineup with Destiny, Avalanche, Blob, Pyro, Mystique and Rogue is the one I remember the most when they teamed with ROM Spaceknight going up against the horror Dire Wraith called Hybrid. Mystique has always been an interesting character but she has many red in her ledger.
Can you do origin of Wonder Man, the Grim Reaper, Molecule Man, Sentry, Mr Immortal, Captain Universe, Dreadknight, Hypnotia, Blizzard, Starhawk, Flerken, Whirlwind, Chemistro, Whiplash, Ronan the Accuser, Ego the Living Planet, the Living Tribunal and Super_Skrull along with Avenger-X and the Protector?
For the people who didn’t know Mystique was supposed to be Nightcrawler’s father while Destiny was supposed to be his mother. But since it was a different time back then people weren’t as understanding as they are now. People back then wouldn’t even know how to react to a homosexual relationship in comics. And on top of that it was a homosexual relationship that produced a child! Could you imagine how bad the religious people would have acted about that back then?! But that’s why the Mystique and Azazel relationship always seemed so forced, and outta the blue because that’s exactly what it was. The whole time it was planned for Mystique to become a man while pleasuring Destiny(if you know what I mean) and Destiny would end up becoming pregnant but the writers received some backlash and so they changed the idea and added in a random demon mutant Azazel. But I really wish that they would’ve kept the original story of Mystique and Destiny being Nightcrawler’s parents because that seemed to be a way better story as apposed to Mystique becoming pregnant by Azazel lol. I wish that could retcon the origin of Nightcrawler now to make it how it was supposed to be back then!
I remember Mystique claiming to know “something” about Nightcrawler during their initial encounter and can buy into that but, like a lot of other “hidden history” situations, I have a hard time believing she didn’t recognize Wolverine during that same encounter, given how close they supposedly were.I mean c’mon, the amnesia trope can only go so far.
Mystique is one of morgan le fays avatars.. hence why morgan or even the morrigans familiar is the raven.. and morgan created the darkhold.. hence raven darkholm.. she’s a fate.. aka the morrigan the morigna.. matrona Madrona matron.. maiden mother crone.. the furies.. the moirai.. they come in many names and images. The norn.. the nornir.. they have had many names throughout the ages.. destiny.. there’s a lot of copy cat marvel characters..
Every X-men movie ever: -magneto: lives a bitter life in the shadows somewhere -shit happens that upsets him (usually human threat against mutants) -Magneto: shows up and enters vilain mode -Charles Xavier: Erik no -Magneto: Erik yes – X-men try to stop Magneto -Sometimes at the last minute Magneto realises it’s mean to be mean -Xavier’s peaceful ways win over Magneto’s angry ones, mutants and humans end up safe -Epilogue: Magneto: brings apology chess board should have listened to you bro Charles: oh bro~you never change! They play chess
While I don’t agree that Darwin could headline his own movie, I thank you SO much for touching on the fact that he is unkillable, though I again don’t like the fact that you attributed it also to him being a person of colour. Doesn’t matter, Darwin is an omega level mutant, who is literally (to this point) unkillable. He doesn’t even need to know what’s hurting him to evolve to be protected, and the limits of his evolution are unknown. One time, he found himself sucked into space, and his body just evolved to the point that he didn’t need to breathe to live.
Clearly Fox never heard of a mutant named Forge who has the mutant ability to build any sort of machine, like a Time Machine and use that as a Time travel device for DoFP. Fox only took all their development time towards Wolverine, Magneto, Professor X which worked for the most part, and for some reason tried with Mystique which didn’t work.
Is no one else completely dissatisfied with how Rogue was done? She was an ineffective crybaby in the films instead of the sassy southern girl. If that wasn’t bad enough, they went and did an awful job on Gambit. Then to make matters worse they never give us those 2 characters in the same movie. Idk about any of you, but the Rogue/Gambit was one of my favorite aspects of the series and Fox didn’t even try.
I disagree with a lot of what she is saying. First class was a soft reboot that had many plot holes created in the past. In X-men 3 Charles and magneto are old men, still friends when they go recruit jean gray. In first class they split as friends when they were younger. That is one of many plot holes the first class reboot caused. Days of future past was an amazing movie that solved all the plot wholes, was one of hugh jackman’s best performances, not the best, but definitely a good one. They had to do a time travel/alternate dimension plot line because there was so many time line problems when they made first class. If days of future past was never made, this article would be about how the timelines don’t match up, and critics on all of the plot holes. The last two movies have seemed to do poorly because they tried to do too much, but first class and DOFP were good movies, and was a good way to soft reboot a series when actors no longer want to stay on a keep up the role. MCU was lucky that they have had to recast roles to a minimum. Most of the main cast wanted to stay on for the entire 11 or so year process. I’m pretty sure everyone but hugh jackman didn’t want to stay on for 20 years. Also I’m 99 percent sure that they didn’t kill off darwin because he was black. They killed him off because they knew the audience would actually feel something when he died, but he was a small enough character to not ruin the movie with his death. Nice making it about color though.
‘Floats through the movie with no emotional stakes’? Really? It’s HIS world that he’s trying to save! He has friends that will DIE when the Sentinels find them, and he has to find Charles and inspire hope in him before the Sentinels kill them all!!!!!! That said, I do agree that Fox focused way too much on Wolverine and not enough on the other X-Men characters.
I PRAISE YOU FOR THE JLAW RANT! I’ve been saying that for years, they only kept her cuz she became a big deal! I wanted a badass Mystique! They ruined Storm (my fave), they ruined Cyclops, they ruined a lot of the characters by underrating them and overrating Wolverine. Would’ve been nice to see the fight between Storm and Cylops too. DISNEY… PLEEAASE do better!!!
I’m just going to put this here before I start perusal it. Bishop! All of thirty seconds in a terrible movie where he played a third-rate canon fodder bit part. What a joke for one of the most epic characters in the history of the franchise. I rank him right up there with Nate/Cable, but what did we get when he finally shows up on screen?
Part of it was Fox and part of it was Disney. Fox refused to give appropriate time to female mutants (Rogue was void of any significance, Storm was downgraded from an Omega level, and Jean, while on the path to be the best mutant in the franchise as of X2, got sidelined in X3). Gambit did get a role in X-Men Origins. While the movie was bad, he was badass. Too bad he wasn’t in the main cast.
“I’d rather have a bad X-men movie than no X-men at all” That’s the definition of toxic fandom. An unthinking demand for more of something for no other reason than because it has a name you know. If you want more of something – regardless of quality – you are recusing yourself of a right to complain about it being bad.
I feel like characters like storm, pysloke and even mystique should definitely get better story dialogue in the mcu, The characters in the comics where so much better and their designs were great, the movies had good/decent designs (storms was extremely questionable) but I hope the mcu gives storm a more emotional story to her, I doubt it would but imagine her and Tchalla interacting!!
still don’t understand why they didn’t use Darwin’s powers as the basis for their Sentinels instead or Mystique’s… Could still make Mystique a big part of the film and have the whole thing make more narrative sense… They find out that Darwin survived, and the government experimented with his powers to create the sentinels… robots that can adapt to any mutant’s powers? They rescue Darwin from captivity, not prevent Mystique from capture, and you’ve got a heist-style movie on your hands with mutants from both sides of the fight agreeing to team up to stop the sentinel program
They killed Havoc, Banshee, Azazel etc for no reason, never introduced Lorna Dane or a dozen other possible characters, acted like Colossus was a fringe member, had Sabertooth appear first as Bigfoot’s younger cousin and then whatever Liev Shriber was supposed to be, never had Pyro, Blob etc team up, overused Wolverine and underused Nightcrawler…the list goes on and on…
One problem with the First Class series is that even though 30 years pass in their franchise from First Class to Dark Phoenix they not only don’t hire older actors to show the passage of 30 years in their lives, they don’t even age them through make up Mystique looks almost the same in 1992 as she does in 1962 except she’s a lighter shade of blue in Dark Phoenix The reason they hired the younger cast for First Class was because it was set 38 years BEFORE the original X Men movie but 30 years pass in that timeline and they’re still using the same actors in the same make up If she didn’t want to go through the 7 hour make up routine, why not do for her what they did for making Tom Holland’s Spider Man Costume completely CGI? Second, she (Mystique) spends more time in her Raven Darkholme persona in each successive film than she does as Mystique because J Law doesn’t want to go into make up unless she absolutely has to Third, what’s with the costume change of the X Men between the end of Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix? the final costumes in Apocalypse look SO much better than the OG X Factor costumes from Dark Phoenix Forth, In the comics it was Rogue who sent Wolverine back in time, not Phoenix, not Jean Grey and not Kitty Pryde Fifth, New mutants is NOW scheduled for April 2020 and with the Disney buyout, it will probably NEVER happen
Hugh Jackman is the best part of every X-men movie, if you say anything bad about his cameos taking the full effect of the movie that just means that they’re doing something right. Without him the movies fully suck, first class wasn’t bad. But having Jackman in days of future past made it great. Having at least one member of the old cast in the past shows that a series can be good.
They really didnt have to re cast Mystique she doesnt age like Wolverine.. so Rebecca could easily have been in any of these earlier movies. But they wanted an actress over a model.. the make up even became so ridiculously unfamiliar to what we saw in Xmen 1 and 2.. it made no sense specifically Dark Pheonix its like a new character how can she change the tone of her skin..and completely different markings. Mystique also had a reptilian type tone to her initial voice.. which disappeared when Jennifer Lawrence took over the role.. more inconsistencies. With no explanation.
If Disney is Smart – they’ll spend some time writing a script that intelligently ties together all the Fox films – rather than just rebooting the characters and stories all over again. We are beginning to understand that re-boots are just lazy script writing: “I can’t figure out how to line-up these previous plot lines – So we’ll just start over.”
Um… you are expecting Disney to improve things? When they purchased Star Wars, they immediately decided that the only Star Wars canon were the movies and all other official works were subject to their middle finger. Look at how Disney re-told all folk tales, Grimm fairy tales, some horror tales, and especially the historical subject of Pocahontas. Fox butchered X-Men but I doubt Disney will improve upon that… I expect them to be worse. I only expect good Disney sh^t that are original Disney things while they go all Disney-crapping on stuff they stole (sorry, “adapted”).
Last comment. Come on, people, we all know that Rebecca Romaine played wayyyy better than Lawrence did, for Mystique. Better martial arts moves. Better body! And as a villain. But Lawrence, with her powerful sales actor agents, “GOT HER” that “contract. You know how it works in hollywood. Rebecca didn’t have the connections that actress Lawrence had.
I think what she’s describing is that some people are too slow to follow. Cyclops is Cyclops. the actor doesn’t change it very much and he’s never been a very central character in these movies. I feel that the newer X-Men movies were much better than the old ones. And I was 20+ yrs old when the first X-Men movie came out
