Is It Acceptable To Give Oneself Tarot Readings?

Reading Tarot cards for oneself is a powerful way to tap into intuition and find answers for various issues, whether they are spiritual or practical. While some readers may feel against this practice, it is generally considered acceptable and even more valuable than having a reading. Tarot readings are often used during times of uncertainty, and connecting with intuition can help find answers in areas such as love, relationships, and life paths.

There is no right or wrong way to pull cards, but getting in the proper frame of mind is crucial for success. A three-card spread is typically sufficient for most complex situations. Tarot can be a wonderful tool for self-discovery and getting in touch with one’s intuition. Learning to read Tarot cards is practically required, and practice is essential for learning the art.

While reading Tarot for oneself can be challenging, it is a free practice that doesn’t require payment for the cards pulled. It is important to maintain objectivity while reading, as it can be incredibly powerful and insightful. Doing a Tarot card reading for oneself is similar to doing it for someone else, but it requires being in a good mental space and calming internal chatter.

A self-reading is a great way to check in with the energies working for and against you, assess certain situations, and determine possible points of action. However, it is important to avoid six mistakes when reading Tarot for oneself, as it can be incredibly powerful and insightful if done correctly.

The deck contains 22 Major Arcana cards, numbered from 0-21, which are important and karmic lessons in life.

Is it safe to read tarot cards?

Tarot cards, like other metaphysical tools, are as safe or dangerous as the messages they deliver. They provide clues into the subconscious and are not harmful themselves. The Tarot is often linked to witchcraft, as many practicing witches use it. However, not all witches use the Tarot. The Tarot is a divination tool used by witches to derive more symbolism and understanding for specific questions. Witchcraft and Tarot can co-exist separately, and reading Tarot does not necessarily mean practicing witchcraft. Both practices involve active engagement with intuition.

What not to do with Tarot?

Reading Tarot cards can be a powerful tool for self-discovery, but it’s important to avoid making mistakes. Some common mistakes include pulling out the deck immediately after a challenging encounter, choosing the wrong spread, adding too many clarifiers, looking up too many card meanings, and reading about others’ feelings or motives. Additionally, doing multiple readings on a topic in one sitting can lead to frustration and confusion.

Tarot cards and other divination techniques won’t work if you aren’t in a clear state of mind. While it’s possible to read for yourself if you have a preferred outcome, it’s crucial to be in a neutral, calm space to accurately read for yourself. The worst time to do a Tarot reading is when you most want the answer, as this can lead to a more confusing and frustrating experience. Therefore, it’s essential to be in a neutral, calm space when reading for oneself.

Can you do too many tarot readings?

It is recommended that tarot readings be spaced out to allow for sufficient time for the practitioner to recharge and process the insights gained from each reading. Attempting to conduct multiple readings in a short time frame has the potential to result in a depletion of energy and a subsequent deterioration in the quality of the readings.

Reading your own tarot is a valuable tool for checking in with your intuition when needed. It can help identify your current needs, address questions, or provide direction in planning. However, it’s important to know when not to use tarot cards, as some questions are best addressed by mental health or medical professionals. Additionally, asking direct questions to someone is more effective than relying on a tarot card reading.

Early French occultists claimed that tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra, or the I Ching. However, scholarly research reveals that tarot cards were invented in Italy in the early 15th century for playing games, and there is no evidence of significant use of them for divination until the late 18th century. The belief in the divinatory meaning of the cards is closely associated with a belief in their occult properties, which was propagated by prominent Protestant Christian clerics and Freemasons.

From its uptake as an instrument of divination in 18th-century France, the tarot went on to be used in hermeneutic, magical, mystical, semiotic, and psychological practices. It was used by Romani people when telling fortunes and as a Jungian psychological apparatus for tapping into “absolute knowledge in the unconscious”, a tool for archetypal analysis, and even a tool for facilitating the Jungian process of individuation.

  • I shuffle the cards until one flips out and repeat this until the spread is complete. This way takes more time but works best for me. When I read for another person especially if I have little or no information about the situation my readings resonate more. The words come out like I’m reading a book out loud. The worst thing you can do when reading tarot/or getting a read from other is asking the same question over and over too often.

  • I’ve had a tarot deck for quite a while but never dove into it and recently I’ve been feeling a little lost in my direction of life and this was a super useful and informative article without being to overwhelming. As my first reading I’ve ever done for myself or another person I am absolutely shocked but my reading as I can’t help but feel like it has helped me out tremendously. The cards are very insightful and perhaps I’m just high hoping but this has been very beneficial. Thank you for this article!

  • I love perusal your articles and learn from you every time I do… I am a beginner.. well lets say I have had tarot decks most of my life and never taken the time to follow through with learning to read for others. I am working on that now, so thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge and great spirit.

  • I’m 6 month in using tarot and Lenormand. I started to work on my spirituality, look deeper inwards and heal old wounds, and manifest my life goal. I find it easy to read for myself cuz I’m very attuned to myself, but there are times when I’m just not getting the message -usually if I didn’t ask a clear question. I found the 3-Voices spread (by Kelly of Truth in Story) and when I combine the 3 systems (Lenormand/Tarot/Advice Oracle) it all just comes to me in a flash -most of the time. I’ve noticed that when I look back at pictures of spreads and the question from a few weeks or months ago I don’t necessarily get the message. When I read my journal entry, it makes sense for what I was going through that moment in my life. That’s what is so endearing about the cards and connecting with my energy and light of existance🙂 I have done a handful of simple readings for others as practice, but lack the confidence to believe in the accuracy. Thanks for the tips. 🌻☀️

  • I find it very easy to read for myself. Maybe being an introvert and stuff. Tarot came up in a conversation with a colleague yesterday and she was very keen to have me read at a work party sometime in the future. Now that made me really nervous – reading for others. Oh what have I got myself in for…

  • Hi Ethony, I love reading for myself, but there are times I just can’t interpret what the cards are saying or just having an off day. If I can’t interpret the cards, I write them down than come back to it later. If still not getting it, I reshuffle and ask the question in another way. If its an off day, I just skip my reading for that day. I don’t want to confuse my cards with my moody day.

  • That is very when you get stuck when reading for yourself. I also experienced that and in my own opinion, when we are reading for others, we don’t know what is going on inside their minds while for use we are very confused by what the cards say and to what we are thinking which makes confusion. Consulting with a guidebook is really great just like what you’ve said. I thought I am the only one who sometimes gets stuck when reading for myself. Thanks!

  • Yes, I do read for myself, and find it very helpful most of the time. However, I have been bothered when a reading didn’t ‘work’, because it didn’t address the question I asked. (Yes, I write the question down beforehand, etc, and log the reading in my journal.) But hey ho – some time later, it turns out that the reading WAS dealing very accurately with something totally unrelated to my question! Disconcerting. How can I tell if a reading simply isn’t working, or if it’s dealing with an issue I’m not aware of yet?

  • Hi I am actually moving away from reversals. Tarot works prefectly well without them. Even Rachell pollack says in her last book that she has included the meaning of reversed cards cause thats how Edgard waite and who is she to contradict him. But she personally dies not use reversals most of the time

  • Hi, I see a psychic every 6 months and I’m told the same thing every time quite soon in to the reading, “you have psychic abilities ” which I haven’t took it any further, however I certainly can relate to their comments. Can you please advise me on how I should start to look into into developing this if of course possible. I’d really appreciate it. As I’m having really intense feelings recently about this and tarotcards although have no idea where id even begin. Thank you, I think you are fab 😊

  • This article was posted so long ago. However I just now came across it as I was looking for something else. I have a serious problem reading for myself. Especially when it would concern some guy that I really liked. I would read on it and I didn’t like what it was saying so I would shuffle again and again to try to get the answer I wanted. Well guess what 😂 either way and no matter what I did to try avoiding it you can change the inevitable. It always came out the way the tarot said it would on the first try

  • I am better at reading for myself….I tend to freeze up when reading for others…I keep a cheat sheet nearby in case of that awkwardness. I froze up in school with tests or when called on so it seems to be the case with live readings. I know it is frowned upon in the community to rely on the books, but I also play the game of using what I do know and then compare for confirmation when accessing the book or cheat sheets.. Still new at it but journaling and resonating with a deck helps greatly in my learning process with both Tarot and Oracle decks.

  • Dear Ethony, I am signed up and prepaid for the summer course. I have completed 2 classes. My computer decided to update without asking me and now I am lost. I cannot find how to sign in again. I have had several brain surgeries. Yesterday was #5 and I am very slow at doing computer stuff. Please help! I enjoy the classes so much! (Stefany Pilliar)

  • Every time I try to read for myself the cards show what I’m feeling right then. Regardless as to what I ask, or meditate or whatever. They still do Unfortunately IDK anyone to ask for a reading. Everybody wants money. Well if you want money, how do I know you’re not going to just tell me what I want to hear so I will ask again??

  • Do you know much about Arianrhod I was doing a reading and she came through in my reading I do intuitive tarot and I’m going through a lot of different phases as of late I’m not feeeling very balanced is there something I should be looking at that I’m missing keep in mind she has beeen around me for some time she first mad herself known a couple months ago

  • See, this (“this” being the altar) is the problem. You are bringing religion/spirituality to something that has very little to do with it, and that puts people off. After all, tarots are just figures slapped on cards that you shuffle and attempt to get a meaning out of. You could do the same with sticks, dice, coins or the bubbles in the washing basin in your kitchen. Other than being a deck of 74 cards, or a piece of Italian 1500s culture (the culture of my ancestors by the way), it has nothing to do with the spirits or inner alignments. It’s a inspirational tool to unwind your thoughts and/or feelings on a topic, with the hope of finding a “truth” you already have, without being aware of it
