Mystic Timbers is way too short of a ride for me. If I’m going to be standing in line for 60 minutes 1:35 isn’t worth it, especially when a good chunk of that is going up the lift. The Beast gets my vote, hands-down. It’s long, loud and “beasty”. (Yes, I made that word up.) Also, the lack of track lights makes it an intense night ride. I mean……it’s in the woods! You don’t get that with many other coasters.
I think the forest ride is a big part of the theming for the Beast. The story of a wild animal running through the woods was how the coaster was advertised back when it opened. Have you ever seen it’s original commercial? It’s pretty cool! Obviously theming for rides has come a long way, but for it’s day The Beast was considered ground breaking, in addition to the ride itself.
I respect the fact you chose Timbers, but just wanna point out that the Beast may have little theming on the ride itself, but the station and waiting areas have a lot of subtle theming. The water mill next to the station, and the mine shaft around back of the station that you pass just before it goes up the lift hill, and the station itself used to be tied together pretty nicely. There was a pond all up in the front area of the ride up until the 90s, and you’re supposed to get the feel you’re in an abandoned mining town and getting chased out of the woods by the Beast. The whole mining town theme makes sense when you think about the fact that the ride sits in the Rivertown section of the park.
The Beast needs major track work done…there is no reason for it to be so rough and have soooo many trims. They need to get the same company that fixed The Legend and made it a fantastic ride. They need to add 90 degree banked turns and some air time hills in those long boring straight sections.As far as roughness goes, I rode The Voyage at least 25 times one day with absolutely no issues. One ride on The Beast, the very next day, and I had a headache that ruined the rest of the day at Kings Island.
i’ve ridden mystic timbers 3 times and the beast probably 5 or 6 times, but i would probably say that the beast is better because i am personally not a huge fan of airtime hills or drops because the dropping feeling in my stomach can sometimes be too much for me to handle. even though i’ve gotten used to mystic timbers (my face on my first ride on it’s photo is horrific) it’s hard for me to thoroughly enjoy it, though it’s really fun. i personally prefer the beast because there’s only two big drops that i have to face ahah. of course mt is WAY smoother, but the beast is just a tad more enjoyable for me.
Fanatics as much as I would love to give you an anwser it’s really hard. It is just as you noted these rides are totally different. One other thing the roughness is also kind of a plus on the beast and for the time it was created in 1979 should give it some extra umph too. Here is my opinion very similar to yours 1.Beast- Pro’s 1.Very Long Ride 2.Fast at the beginning 3.Best night ride out of any coaster 4.Nostalgia 5.Jerkness(now some may disagree but I like a traditional jerky wooden coaster once in a while and I think the beast does this well) 6.Outstanding drop 7.540 Degree Helix Cons 1.Lackluster Airtime-Outside of a few moments in the beginning it’s pretty non exsistant 2.Trim Brakes- Such a killer. any coaster enthusiast will tell you that it’s like hyping up a christmas present only to find out you got new socks 2.Mystic Timbers Pros 1.Oustanding airtime- The best I have seen on a GCI so far 16 airtime hills 2.Beautiful Banked Turns- Awesome quick banked turns throws you right of your seat 3.Millenium Flyer trains- So comfortable its like a couch on a coaster train 4.Outstanding GCI banked drop(per usual) 5.Great rides at day or night Cons 1.Too short a little bit longer would have been good 2.Shed Lackluster(bit of a spoiler) 3. Not as good of a night ride as the beast. Overall I think both coasters serve different purposes and as an enthusiast myself this was a fantastic addition and it was not too similar to the Beast. However if I must give an anwser it is ranked ahead of the beast in my top 5 woodies 1.
honestly, i feel like this is like comparing apples and oranges mainly bc 1) the beast was built in the late 70s (which was long before GCI was established) and 2) MT is brand spanking new and its gonna be smoother. i did notice that the area where MT is is not as large as where the beast is. BUUUUUUUUUT i think they’re both wonderful woodies and I can’t wait to ride them when i eventually make my way up to Kings Island.
Now, I personally like Mystic Timbers more, it’s my favorite ride! But the first time I went on the Beast, I was waiting on line, and when one of the carts that went before us came back, the dude working there asked “how was your ride?” And like, 2 people said ” woo” 😂 and everyone else looked PETRIFIED 😆 When I finally got on the Beast, I enjoyed it 👍 but my brother was the opposite. He’ll never go on it again 😂
curved drops are boring to me but the airtime hills were a lot of fun on Mystic Timbers! Beast has a better first drop but not much airtime. however it has that really intense banked turn that caught me off guard. its hard to choose honestly. they are both fun in different ways. if I had to pick though Id most likely pick Mystic Timbers as its has more continuous thrills where as Beast as more “dead” areas.
idk I love both of them but mystic tembers does have a much slightly better them to it since it plays like 80s music and has other special effects in the shed it does have way better air time then the beast does but I like the beast though to but If I had to choose I would mystic timbers has a much better quality to it the number one reason is cause of the ride and air time you get and the old classic 80s rock that plays in the shed when a monster pops out
There’s no comparison, they’re so different the question is simply “which do you like better?” I’m not a Beast hater, but don’t see why so many coaster hobbyists are so passionate about this coaster that does almost nothing. It’s a nice, fast scenic trip through the woods. The brakes suck, there’s no airtime, no laterals except in the helix. It’s a fast scenic railway. I do love the helix. I also love the 3 brake-free rides I’ve gotten, it’s a totally different ride without trims. Kings Island could easily remove the damn brakes and make it a much better ride. So there’s no question that Mystic Timbers is the superior coaster. It has actual thrills, which Beast lacks.
Agreed on apples to oranges! in fairness to MT, I think if you count the time of the Beasts two lift hills you should include the shed experience. It’s not like they’ll let you off beforehand if you want. If you were to compare the two on their respective opening days I think the Beast would crush Mystic Timbers. However if the Beast opened in today’s marketing driven, element glutton culture, it would probably be a walk on.The Beast was, and still is, one of a kind. I think that was its purpose and two a certain degree, its theme! I actually think it’s lack of theming is its theming. The element of the unknown. The unleashed beast! Could you really name a smooth ride the beast? All that being said, having not ridden Mystic Timbers yet, its not fair for me to weigh in, but I sort of have the “been on one,…them all” view of GCI. Actually, with all the negative reviews of the shed experience I could see them reviving the “Beastie” name in a few years as they did with “the bat”!

Im going to be that one guy that says mystic timbers. For starters the beast is just too damn rough, people will tell you it’s not but that’s just false. Literally everywhere I’ve sat has beaten the shit out of me. It’s an old coaster. there’s new brakes installed on the coaster at certain points because of how rough it used to be in those spots. The beast is still a great coaster that feels like it takes 8 minutes to ride. I’m sure if they remade it with today’s technology it would feel a lot smoother. And therefore better than mystic timbers. But mystic timbers feels like one of the fastest rides I’ve ever been on even though it’s max speed is only like 56 or something like that. That’s because it’s hauls ass from the minute you go down the hill to the minute you reach the shed. The theme to the ride is very cool too. I’m sure he beast would’ve been better if made in the same year as mystic timbers, but for now I’m saying mystic timbers.

I live 5 min away from kings Island I have never been on The Beast and I have never been on Mystic Timbers when I tried to get on mystic timbers it was 1 hour wait and I said hell no that is to long of a wait I moved to Ohio in December and have only been to kings island 2 times and I enjoy it there.
Mystic Timbers is better by a million miles because just because beast is longer, it is mostly spent on the very slow lift hills and the beast is mostly straight sections. Mystic Timbers has a lot of airtime and is imo way better than the beast. Voyage is my favorite wooden coaster with Mystic Timbers at #2.
