The Muladhara Mudra is a powerful technique that involves bringing the palms of one’s hands together at the heart center, interlacing pinky and ring fingers to fold inside the palms. The ring finger represents responsibility, stability, and balance, while the pinky fingers represent water and sacral chakras. By manipulating these fingers, we direct our body’s energy channels, known as prana.
The root chakra is the foundation for all other chakras, with emphasis on survival and grounding. The mantra for this mudra is LAM, which means “Lam”. To stimulate the root chakra, bring your palms together in a prayer at the base of the spine. Each finger in a mudra holds a specific and powerful meaning, representing an element, mental state, and physical condition. For example, the thumb represents the earth element, connected to the root chakra. Each finger is associated with a color, chakra, and element, activating a specific center to open and release stuck energy.
In Tantric anatomy, the thumb is associated with the solar plexus-chakra, index finger with heart-chakra, middle finger with throat-chakra, first finger with sacral/sexual chakra, heel of palm / wrist junction with root chakra, and pinky finger with the base or root chakra. The root chakra is one of the seven primary chakras according to Hindu tantrism, symbolized by a lotus with four petals and the color pink or red.
Mudras like the Muladhara Mudra are believed to help connect with the root chakra in a subtle but powerful way.
