Magic Johnson, a former NBA star, has denied contracting HIV from a contaminated Hepatitis B vaccine as part of a study run by Dr. Anthony Fauci decades ago. Instead, he believes he contracted the virus from unprotected sex. Johnson wrote in his autobiography that “my pleasure was being with women”, and described the road culture that led to the encounter during which he was infected with HIV.
On October 24, 1991, Johnson received a call from a Lakers physician asking him to come home right away. AIDS activist Elizabeth Glaser convinced Johnson to go public with his diagnosis, as she had contracted HIV during a blood transfusion while giving birth to daughter Ariel. Johnson discussed living with HIV three decades after being initially diagnosed with the virus prior to the 1991-92 season.
On the 25th anniversary of disclosing he had AIDS, researchers say that even with treatment advances, prevention remains the best medicine. Johnson shares the most poignant moments of his journey with HIV, from receiving the devastating news to sharing it with his wife. In 1991, HIV/AIDS was still largely seen as a disease that affected gay men and drug addicts, despite its growing encroachment in the African continent.
Johnson has been an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex since his retirement, as well as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, broadcaster, and advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex. HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system and if not treated, it can lead to AIDS.
