What is the science behind magic sand?
Magic sand, also known as hydrophobic sand, is a toy made from sand coated with a hydrophobic compound. This compound causes the grains of sand to adhere and form cylinders when exposed to water, creating a pocket of air around the sand. This pocket of air prevents magic sand from getting wet. A variation of this, kinetic sand, has similar properties but acts like wet sand that will not dry out. The earliest reference to waterproof sand is in the 1915 book The Boy Mechanic Book 2, which states that it was invented by East Indian magicians.
Magic sand was initially developed to trap ocean oil spills by sprinkling it on floating petroleum, which would mix with the oil and sink. However, due to production costs, it is no longer used for this purpose.
