Olivia Newton John.. An iconic voice that’s been ever-present throughout my life.. One of my first childhood celebrity crushes, and one of only a few that have remained a crush to this day! She was so talented and beautiful.. I’m so sad to hear of her passing.. This song “Magic” has always been the first song I pull up when I want to hear her beautiful voice. Thank you Olivia for bringing that magic to my life, along with so many others in this world! RIP
I have always respected this impeccable recording. I was immediately transfixed by the sound the very first time on a single mono am radio speaker. This was done with tape machines and true manual labor without laptops or scene memory. Qualified audio engineers with real analog discipline prove to be the elder statesmen of studio production. Those Stratocaster guitars jangle perfectly with stereo chorusing and the synth pad sounds made it epic. Cool bass lick too. The delay echoes on her voice have an elegant amount of analog chorus in spots that blend in nicely with the sweetness of the stereo choruses on the guitars. There are lots of lush stereo goodies exquisitely glazed on this tape. There is unique stereo panning with hints of delay/echo effect on the hi hat too. The entire sonic spectrum is magic from start to finish as it’s a brilliant achievement in audio technology but 42 years later if I put on stereo headphones, I will cry.
Olivia’s musical resume can be compared with the best. First female to win a Grammy in Country and Pop; one of two artists to win a article Grammy; multiple awards, top 5 soundtrack ftom the forgettable movie Xanadu; her popularity made ‘Physical’ a monster hit. “Magic” is my favorite. The music, Olivia’s vocal chord changes, and the lyrics. If we believe we’re magic, nothing can stand in our way. Thanks Olivia, for leaving part of you with us.
My mom is the reason why I am a huge Olivia Newton John fan to this day. When I was a little kid back in the early 80’s, my mom would watch a concert that Olivia Newton John did on HBO over and over. She watched so much that I knew all the songs very well in a short amount of time. I love all of them to this day, but Magic has always been my favorite. It is a MASTERPIECE to me.
This is one of the songs in my life that always makes me think of my mom because it came out right around the time that my mom and I were in a car accident in 1980 when I was 8, which took the lives of two of my parents’ friends and almost took us too. On September 15, 1987 my mom died from cancer at age 36, and I always play this every anniversary because it reminds me so much of her and that time in our lives. Makes me so much sadder now that Olivia is on the other side of the curtain too. I was just thinking of her, remembering so many of her songs, which I had played in my head just the day before I heard the news of her passing. I was shocked and broken hearted. Today is the 35 year anniversary of my mom’s passing and I’m in tears over both of them, been crying for hours now. Olivia was my IDOL growing up. So beautiful inside and out. Like my mom.
Joe, Ray, Mark, Fred….remember Summer of 1980? Riding our bikes down the streets in the neighborhood and this playing on my little radio? We were all 14-15 years old (and yes…riding bikes..Times were WAAAY diffrent back then).Incredible how some tunes can conjure up the best of all memories. We use to argue who would marry ONJ! LOL. That was a heck of a summer…1980. Fantastic memories. And yes…35 years later…I still love this tune as does my 13 year old. 😎
Loved this woman’s voice (pure quality) super talented and she was beautiful as well. I fell in love with her the first time I saw the movie Xanadu. That voice. I know that Celebrities pass away all the time but this one hits a little harder. I felt this exact feeling when i heard the news about the deaths of jazz greats George Duke and Al Jarreau. Seems like the world is a less beautiful place when these types of talents leave. RIP and RIH Queen Olivia
When I heard Olivia Newton John died, this was the first song that popped into my head. I refrained from looking it up and playing it until a couple of days ago. I don’t know why, but when I heard and saw the article it was instant tears. This song showcases her voice so beautifully. It’s such a shame that beauty never lasts long here on Earth. RIP. 😭😭😭
Come take my hand You should know me I’ve always been in your mind You know I will be kind I’ll be guiding you Building your dream Has to start now There’s no other road to take You won’t make a mistake I’ll be guiding you You have to believe we are magic Nothing can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don’t let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Destiny will arrive I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you From where I stand You are home free The planets align so rare There’s promise in the air And I’m guiding you Through every turn I’ll be near you I’ll come anytime you call I’ll catch you when you fall I’ll be guiding you You have to believe we are magic Nothing can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don’t let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Destiny will arrive I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you You have to believe we are magic Nothing can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don’t let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Destiny will arrive I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you Songwriters: John Farrar. (c)1980 Olivia Newton-John: Lead vocals, backing vocals John Farrar: Electric guitar, electric piano, synthesizers, backing vocals David Hungate: Bass guitar Carlos Vega: Drums, percussion
Can you believe how dreamy and rich this track is? The bass line floats around as if were the earth bouncing in between the planets at a perfect distance. Inside that distance is Olivia Newton-John’s angel voice from down under. At 2:48 the harmonies overload the senses as her voice runs up top in a beautiful magical marriage of sound. Lots of ELO Electric Light Orchestra influence here and is evident as the album around these years was. Simple elegance with the feeling this was recorded on a humid day somewhere in the studio – as her voice going through effects on the mic is heated wonderfully by the air in the studio – makes magic on this track.
A big chunk of me died along with Olivia Newton John—- she was my Inspiration—- remember singing Hopelessly devoted to you a million times alone in the shower, car driving— and this song just really made me feel She was my Guardian Angel— as I turn 65 this year! Not to mention her charity and selfless courage to beat cancer ♋️ and help many many to also💖Beautiful, radiant, sweet voiced Angel may you rest in Beauty, Grace, Peace and Love 💗
I agree with all of the accolades given to the gifted Olivia Newton-John.However,this particular song has true meaning and magic in its lyrics. One of the most motivating songs that somehow touched me while at the same time, lifting me up.Hard to put into words but this song will stay on my playlist for infinity.
I heard this song as a kid when it came out, but didn’t pay attention to it. Because even at 10 I knew it wasn’t cool for a boy to listen to Olivia Newton-John tunes. Just read some info about her a few minutes ago, remembered this song, and watched this article. 😳😳😳 This may seriously be one of the greatest songs ever written.
We saw Olivia at her final concert which was at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI. She announced that she was canceling the rest of her tour because of her illness. What a bittersweet night to see a legend in our back yard, but knowing that it was the end of an Era. She sounded phenomenal that night. Rest easy Miss Olivia.

“A familiar spirit – (alter ego, doppelgänger, personal demon, personal totem, spirit companion) is the double, the alter ego, of an individual. It does not look like the individual concerned. Even though it may have an independent life of its own, it remains closely linked to the individual.” -Pierre A. Riffard
I’ve always loved this song as a little girl 7-8 but it always made me cry even now as an adult ( I’m 44) I don’t know why. Never knew the lyrics by heart just the chorus or read them as the song played. I tired not to cry but this time I cried and my heart was cracked open -( super crazy ) I needed to say something so I came here ( lmfao Jesus help me) there was my message – Change your circumstances – you have to believe you’re magic and that no one can get In your way. keep manifesting soul family! Oxoxox
I’m 44. I have a great memory with just things in general. Plus I’m a musician, singer writer and producer. I remember coming back from Martha’s Vineyard with my parents and my younger sister, driving in the car. I was about 7 years old sleeping in the backseat about to get to our block in New York City after being on the road for hours. This song came on the radio and I was half asleep but I remembered it. Kind of spooky but pretty at the same time and it stuck with me through the years. Rip Olivia newton-john.
This song was really popular in the 70’s when my mom had cancer the first time. I think it was like 1978. I was age eight. I remember staring up at the hospital she was in. She was up in like the 3rd floor. I didn’t really understand what was going on but I just knew mom was sick and I was traumatized. I remember this song through my mind a lot because it was playing so much. I associated “Magic” with my being in the hospital. It was like soundtrack in movie. Anyway, she pulled through that. But it returned later on in 1998. That time it was non-hoctchkin’s lymphoma and she passed in September of 1999. Her name was Carole. She was born in January of 1948. Rest In Peace, Mom. Father, I come before you in the mighty name of Jesus. I ask that you remove ever trace of cancer from Olivia’s body. Be Thou Made Whole For The Glory Of God. Amen
Olivia Newton John was one of the singers I loved the most in my childhood. She fired my imagination with Xanadu and my ability to fall in love with Magic. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. The world lost a great singer. I lost a muse, a being of inspiration, a great memory of my childhood and adolescence.
I was 25 in 80′ having the time of life in NYC. Great times young & carefree. Independent, long hair, playing disc, riding my bike all over the city, dating a green eye beauty, yep life was good…why…was it Magic ???? Today I am 59 year old, hair is all gone, but I have lived a good life, with a good wife, & a son…was it Magic ??? Nope just life….This song, Olivia singing does “bring my dreams to life”. Peace 2 ya …great post

Eversince I was a child, she’s already my favorite female singer aside from ABBA due to her looks, attitude and her wonderful voice. Until now 47 yrs after, she already died but nobody replaces her as my favorite female singer. Aside from this song, I also liked Physical, Suddenly, I Honestly Love You and my most favorite song of hers, “Best of Me”.
This song popped into my mind out of nowhere…after perhaps 38 years. I began singing it in the kitchen. But I had been waiting to hear from a certain job. I finally received the offer and it just seems my life is going in a new and better direction. The song has brought me peace. It’s hard to describe. I really appreciate beauty of the music and the message more than ever. It could be my favorite song now.
This article is perfect. One of the most beautiful woman to ever walk the face of the earth singing this fantastic song, which I think is her best. She does it with style, class and a nice little touch of alluring sexuality. Just the right amount. Not over the top as many performers are today. I am very lucky to have grown up perusal her perform. I pray for her in her long bout with cancer. The longer this angel remains on the earth, the better all of us are.
2020…still love her & her music…such a Lady.. I was 10 when the song came out.. we all wanted 2 b her.. on my power walking playlist..80s 4eva💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕my mom wore the headband the same way.. haircut as well…the Princess Diana 😂💕have all her original albums.. my favorite was from Physical .. I also love Twist of Fate💕such clean wholesome movies 💕
ONJ – Australia’s original sweetheart, what an incredible talent. No sex or drug scandals, never heard a bad word about her, everyone that met her always had positive things to say. A true reflection of her wonderful character. Thankyou for providing a significant part to the soundtrack to my youth. She will be missed the world over.
When I was receiving treatment for Breast Cancer I heard this song. It was my anthem that I listened to every day I sat in the Chemo chair having the poison pumped into my vein. It kept me moving forward, gave me hope, and helped me through the bad times to the finish. Today I am a survivor of 6 years. Olivia Newton-John was a breast cancer survivor too. Thank you Olivia for helping me endure!!!
I came here to say goodbye to Olivia. This is my favorite song and performance by her. She was angelic by sight and by sound. She was all class right to the end. Never heard anyone say a bad word against her. A little bit of my life went away today too. Rest Olivia Newton-John, the memories will never fade,
One of the most irresistible, magnetic, gorgeous, sexiest, yet purest Olivia Newton-John articles I’ve ever seen in her all-white outfit! I never forgot how incredible she was seeing her perform this #1 hit in 1980, when she was 31. Nobody has sung or performed “Magic” any better or ever will. She was dynamite, and the best I’ve ever seen her performing any song as powerfully as she did here! Interestingly, “Xanudu” the film it was in, was a big failure at the box office, but the soundtrack was a big success, and “Magic” specifically, was a huge #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks from Aug. 2-23, 1980. An absolute must-have for any Olivia Newton-John fan! She and Karen Carpenter signified the terrific 1970s decade in female singers, with The Carpenters in the first half (1970-74), and Olivia from 1974-80, if you count 1980 as the last year of the 1970s. “Physical was her biggest hit, 10 weeks at #1 in 1981, but I never liked it as much as her love ballads, and “Magic” a wonderful inspiring song for succeeding, “nothing can stand in our way…” Her longtime songwriter, John Farrar wrote “Magic.”
Olivia is the total package!!! She is one of the queens of song that no one can touch… she didn’t need to show her body… she didn’t need back up dancers…. she didn’t need earphones and fancy audio equipment or auto tune…. she was and IS just pure talent!!! and Beauty🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊
My cousin really blew it with her – she was always so nice and friendly to everyone. Matt was too young to be married and he really needed to grow up a lot. Our family was shocked when he said he was getting married and when they found out she was 10 years older there was a lot of disappointment, not in Olivia but in the fact that we felt like he should marry someone his own age. Olivia more than Matt wanted the marriage but that’s because she was always more mature than my cousin. He was really lucky to have her he was just too young to understand that. There relationship did produce a beautiful daughter but the relationship was more of a new thing for both of them that just got old just as quickly and that was a shame to our family but was definitely not a surprise when they got divorced. All the happiness in the world to you Olivia it was great having you part of the family at one time 😉 may God bless you 🙏🏽 G. Lattanzi
My god she was soooooo freaking beautiful…and that voice..OH THAT VOICE…I was a young man back then, and when this was popular I wasn’t even sure what a “sexy woman” was yet…all I know is when she sang, it was directly to me and I felt all weird inside…so I’m assuming that, like quite a few of you, she was my first crush as well. I was into rock at the time…KISS, Thin Lizzy, Led Zep…but WHENEVER olj sang, something in me was transfixed.
Hey guys. When I first time I heard this divine voice and words I thought It’s goddess voice. But I’m sure, you didn’t understand me. In Soviet times, we have the records of the Western brilliant singers. We don’t know who their are, because we live under iron curtain(I’m from Uzbekistan). So when I was listening this divine song, nobody told me who she is. But I thought she should an angel. In 2009, I found she is real, she is beautiful.
She was kind of the incarnation of a fairy. Some kind of divinity. When I was young and perusal Xanadu, I actually thought she was a fairy in disguise to show us that they still exist somewhere and where there to help us discovering beautiful and meaningful things! She was the perfect choice for the Xanadu movie. She WAS A GODDESS. When I found that she was just an actress, I cried a lot. (lol…)
We should thank our lucky stars, for the few geniuses who invented the amazing motion picture camera around a hundred and thirty years ago. Capturing and preserving living reality for everyone else to see and hear. As well as for whoever wrote this dazzling song, meaning, the haunting provocative lyrics.
This always brings me back. The 70s and 80s seemed so much more laid back, and yet so full of promise for the future. I was in elementary school back in the late 70’s but I can still remember plenty. Bright Saturday mornings…watching cartoons….the Smurfs, Battle of the planets, Rocket Robinhood, etc. The cars The TV shows (Battlestar Galactica, The Hardy Boys, Space 1999, etc) The movies (StarWars when it came out at a drive-in theater, Alien) The music….. 🙂 The furniture That brown tanned glass that seemed to be everywhere article arcades Big Macs that actually tasted good, and those foam boxes they came in. sigh…… It’s funny. When we are young we want to grow up, and after we grow up we want to be young again. ….I do remember being bored to death most of the time. I suppose that’s one thing that I don’t experience that much now. PS: Get off my lawn!
Love you Olivia, you will be missed what a major musical impact you have had on the world 🌎 so many memories that come flowing back to every facet of one’s lives, once you start listening to your majestic, intoxicating voice, your music will carry on to future generations .thanks Olivia, for the good times through your music and the sad ones .so loved, and appreciated
What can I add to what has already been said? Not much, but I gotta say it. Olivia Newton John is so incredibly gorgeous, sexy, talented, beautiful, un-freaking-believable, and everything everyone else has said about her. Best wishes to Olivia for a long, healthy and happy life! She has sure brought a lot of joy to my life.
Her energy her look the way she dances that smile like come on she’s literally perfect and had an innocence about her that made it all even better made her stand out ahhh I can remember 5 year old me perusal grease for the first with my beautiful grandmother that also passed and I would replay it all the time even now at 35 I do lol she will always remind me of the better part of my my childhood I’m so glad I can come here a see her to relive those magical feelings all over again ❤
I’m an Aussie. You don’t get what she meant to us. And WAAAAAY more to her than the singing shit. We are in grief Down Under Typical Aussie, self depreciating, fuck all ego. NEVER thought she was ‘better’ than anyone else She was largely responsible for clearing the path for our INCREDIBLE talent to be loved by the rest of the world from SUCH a small (population, not in size) isolated, continent Aussies fucking kick arse in any area you care to mention! 😉
Ladies and gentlemen THAT’S how you show you have the “it” factor. IMO far too many singers and other performers this day in age try to show how sexy or “hot” they are by flashing a lot of skin or resorting to crudity. In this article Ms. Newton-John shows us there’s clearly another way: take a great song, add a dash of head shake, crook a beckoning finger, and give a knowing wink. Oh yeah, let’s not forget to surround it with a terrific voice. Having had he honor of meeting Olivia several years ago I can assure one and all that the “dreams” this lady weaved with her incredible voice and presence is absolutely no illusion. She is as incredibly beautiful and gracious (perhaps even more so) as many of her fans may have imagined. Yep, may I dare say she is………..MAGIC!!!!
Come take my hand You should know me I’ve always been in your mind You know that I’ll be kind I’ll be guiding you Building your dream Has to start now There’s no other road to take You won’t make a mistake I’ll be guiding you CHORUS: You have to believe we are magic Nothin’ can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don’t let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Your destiny will arrive I’ll bring all your dreams alive For you From where I stand You are home free The planets align so rare There’s promise in the air And I’m guiding you Through every turn I’ll be near you I’ll come anytime you call I’ll catch you when you fall I’ll be guiding you CHORUS
11 days after her death and I’m still grieving her. I probably always will. She was adored by all. Any message board on anything Olivia, and I have read a lot, nothing but wonderful things are said. She was a treasure, an angel and an enormous talent and she hit us all hard when she left us. I loved her so much!
