The Cups and Balls Magic Trick is a classic magic trick that involves flipping a cup mouth down with one hand, flashing one hand empty, and stealing the ball in the right finger palm. The trick can be performed using a wand, with advanced techniques and personal variations like the transparent cup twist or narrative elements. Mike Patrick, a magician, shares a step-by-step guide on how to perform this trick with plastic cups, foil, and YouTube.
To perform the trick, place one ball onto the center cup, stack it, and snap it. Then, one ball magically goes through the cups. The trick involves three cups and three balls, with one ball placed on top of the center cup and the other two cups on top. Coin magic uses performance skills that can apply directly to using balls, especially in misdirection, framing, and presentation.
Incorporating advanced techniques and personal variations, such as the transparent cup twist or narrative elements, can significantly enhance the trick’s impact. The trick has been around for centuries and can be learned with a few plastic cups, foil, and YouTube.

If you do the trick starting from the bottom cup, it’s much easier. Stack the three cups together with the 4th ball in the middle cup, three ball in the top cup. Then with the three cups still together, dump the three balls out. Space out the three balls. Then with the stack pointing at an angle slightly down, remove the bottom cup and place it behind the first ball. Then tilt the two cups slightly up and remove the second cup (with the ball in it) and set it open side down behind the second ball. Of course you need to do it so you don’t expose the ball in the middle cup. Not too slow so it falls out and everyone sees it, but not too fast as though you are hiding something. Then place the last cup down behind the third ball. Then do the trick. Try it this way and see if you don’t like it better. You can reply
You are doing the trick correctly, but it’s much better to hold the three cups in one hand, and take the bottom cup and place it down. Then take the middle cup ( one ball inside) and place it down, and finally the last cup. You need to hold the cups at an angle so the ball in the middle cup doesn’t fall out. I like how with the third cup you make the ball vanish then it appears under the third with the other two balls.
I raught at a school that was having a fundraising dinner. I was asked to perform. Maybe 20~25 tables. I taught some of my students to do some tricks so they could circulate and do table magic. I also did table magic using the same cups and balls that you have. Except rather than oranges I decided to use eggs. And I didn’t boil the eggs and one broke my pocket when I was performing at one table.
