I bought one of these recently at a rite aid grocery store in CA. I think it was like 4.99 for a brothers war set booster, and the stone coil serpent. I figured it was a good deal considering the set booster was that same price at my local game store, and I was getting a free stone coil on top of that. Things must have changed in all this time since the release of this article
I only used to buy my booster from my local game store since I started because it’s cheaper than in a large store, people are very nice and they love to explain to newbies (like me) stuff about MTG. So yeah avoid those scams and share interest in your local game store the owners will care about you more than in a normal store when people just want you to buy some crappy stuff.
Being in north east Mississippi I learned of mtg in the 90s but didn’t play till the early 2000s only a few times now that I’m trying to get back into it I’m having a hard time learning and finding people to play with I want so badly to play but my local game store only does a Thursday evening game night I’m located in Fulton/tupelo Ms!
Weird. I’ve only seen this sort of thing with Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon cards. And I’ll admit, I did buy some of those. All I can say is – wherever they did the repack at – quality control was not a priority. I’ve had some cards either scuffed up and dirty, or in a language I don’t understand; mind you, they weren’t in a foil, just thrown in bare with a 1/16″ of plastic protecting it.
Pokémon cards are also being scammed exactly like this too is really slimey and the companies don’t seem to care, doesn’t help that vendors at stores like Target or Walmart are never incentivized by the company to ensure price accuracy, I know that neca and funko are adamant about pricing but I don’t understand why its a struggle for cards
Not only are these packs going to be terrible, they’re most likely stripped of any chance at a chase rare. I had a friend show me the method to figuring out what was in the entire unopened box after only opening about 7 packs. He was correct about every card predicted past that point and could guarantee which packs had 50 cent rares and which were worth buying the box for.
Why would Hasbro want this practice to stop? They want people buying cards – regardless of where they got the cards from – because they know that, statistically, there is a certain percantage of buyers who will buy into a “sunk-cost” fallacy and continue to buy cards and play the game, regardless of whether or not they had gotten bamboozled in the process. If anything, Hasbro wants these sorts of scam packs on shelves because it makes their products seem that much more attractive next to the obvious scams.
these kind of repacks are rampant among all of the big 3 TCGs, the worst i find is yugioh but pokemon is also up there on how many variations there are. it’s sickening. a lot of them advertise “chance of a rare pack!” but the sets are no more than 5yo at best, and some of those products don’t even come with a pack, it’s just 20ish loose cards in a waste of material
I bought one of these packs one time recently, the pack inside was a masters 25 which I thought was cool since I didn’t start playing till after that set dropped, but anyway, the card I pulled from it was a chalice of the void, sure it’s not the most valued one but damn it I was excited, then I bought another and learned why you don’t buy these
It just occurred to me, it is very possible that the purchaser at Target has no idea what they’re getting here, and they may not be aware of how much of a ripoff this is at 18 bucks. Might be worth reaching out to them to let them know. At least give them a chance to make this right. They got to know this is going to hurt their marketing to magic buyers in the long run.
