Was Shakespeare An Astrologer?

William Shakespeare, an English actor, poet, and playwright, was born in 1564. In his time, astrology was closely associated with various fields such as astronomy, cosmology, alchemy, mathematics, horticulture, medicine, and mythology. Shakespeare’s plays, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest, explore the paradoxical purposes of the science of astrology.

The large number of astrological references in Shakespeare’s canon suggests more than just a vocational interest or idle curiosity in the practice of astrology by the author. The frequent mention of astrology in drama, not only Shakespeare’s plays, presupposes an audience familiar with the subject and its surrounding folklore. Astrology was divided into astrologia, and Shakespeare’s character’s attitudes to astrology reflect those in Elizabethan England. Some believed that astrology offered truth and wisdom, while others shared the contemporary belief in natural astrology.

However, Shakespeare did not adhere to the belief in any influence of the stars on destiny. He proclaimed that it is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves, revealing his disdain for astrology. Ironically, the stars were also an influence on Shakespeare’s plays and Queen Elizabeth’s decisions in daily life.

In summary, Shakespeare’s plays and Queen Elizabeth’s decisions in daily life were heavily influenced by astrology, which was the belief that the position and movement of the stars could influence events on Earth. The celestial cynics on Shakespeare’s stage echo contemporary tracts such as John Harvey’s A Discoursive Probleme Concerning…

Was astrology during Shakespeare’s time?

Astrology was a crucial aspect of Elizabethan society, used to provide answers in various fields such as medicine, biology, physics, and philosophy. Astrologers were highly influential, with most courts employing them for important decisions. The humanistic and hermetic approach to astrology was popular at the time. Shakespeare’s plays contain over a hundred references to astrology, reflecting the political and intellectual status of the subject.

Shakespeare’s characters’ attitudes towards astrology reflect the attitudes of Elizabethan England, with some believing in astrology as a truth and wisdom, while others rejected it due to new scientific explanations and religious reforms. King Lear’s first speech, for example, relates to the natural astrology of his time, highlighting the importance of astrology in understanding the universe.

What does Shakespeare say about stars?

In Act III, Scene III of King John, Julius Caesar makes reference to the field of astronomy, citing its ability to predict the occurrence of good or evil fortune.

What were Shakespeare’s superstitions?

King James I of England was known for his superstition about witches, leading to the creation of works like Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play features witches who manipulate characters and cast spells to destroy lives. Elizabethans believed fairies played tricks on innocent people, similar to the play. Today, Elizabethan superstitions include not walking under a ladder, saying “Bless you” when someone sneezes, not spilling salt due to its high cost, and not allowing black cats to enter one’s body due to their association with witches. These practices continue to be followed today.

Our existence is a complex tapestry of both positive and negative experiences, with a simultaneous presence of both.

How did Shakespeare feel about astrology?

Shakespeare rejected the idea that stars dictated a person’s fate, stating that the fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves. This suggests that the author knew his own horoscope and didn’t want to feel bound by what it predicted. The modern planets round out Oxford’s chart and show its power, as they provided insight into the planets from Moon to Saturn. Smith’s interests aligned with Shakespeare’s, leading to the belief that his student, the Earl of Oxford, must be Shakespeare.

Smith’s student must have known about the new model of the heavens, which could have been easily read about in Copernicus’s book. Oxford would have heard about this from his tutor, Leonard Digges, and Leonard Digges’ experiments with telescopes. Learning about Copernicus before he knew anything about the old worldview would have no reason why Oxford would ignore it. If he was Shakespeare, he had an audience to please who were emotionally attached to the old worldview, as Copernicus threatened to hurl their worldview into deep space.

What is the astrology in Romeo and Juliet?

In Romeo and Juliet, astrology serves as a substitute for fate, establishing a double correspondence between Juliet’s jewel and the stars in a Petrarchan conceit, and between Phaeton’s disaster and the tragedy of the “star-crossed lovers.”

Which philosophers believed in astrology?

Hellenistic astrology developed rapidly, with later practitioners and writers not following any single philosophical influence. Vettius Valens, a Stoic astrologer, indicates Stoic leanings. Claudius Ptolemy, an astrologer, astronomer, and geographer, used Aristotelian influenced arguments to portray astrology as a natural science, while dismissing some doctrine due to lack of systematic rigor. The later Platonic Academy had a fair share of astrological interest, with Thrasyllus acting as an astrologer to Emperor Tiberius and credited for works on astrology and numerology. Neoplatonists Porphyry, Iamblichus, and Proclus practiced or accepted some form of astrology, conforming to their unique contributions to Neoplatonism.

The idea of astrology as a systematic account of fate had a pervasive impact on influential thinkers of the time who helped shape the theoretical and cosmological understanding of the practice. Thinkers in the skeptical Academy and Pyrrhonic schools sought to attack the theoretical underpinnings of the practice of astrology, using arguments centering around freedom, the ontological status of stars and planets, and the logical or practical limitations of astrological claims.

The philosophies and philosophical schools of the Hellenic and Hellenized world made the spread and acceptance of Babylonian astrology possible. Fate, fortune, chance, and necessity were often interchangeable in early Greek thinking, with the gods’ intervention in human affairs presenting the possibility of two paths of fate based on moral choice.

  • I knew a guy in college who joined the Flat Earth Society back in the ’80’s on a lark, not because he thought the earth was flat but because he liked collecting their wacky literature. He said they used arguments such as: the surface of the water in this glass is flat, the ruler is flat, therefore the earth is flat. Then one day he was feeling down and I asked him what was wrong. He said he made the mistake of sending in his dues using a stamp with a picture of the globe on it, so they returned his payment and cancelled his membership.

  • I completely agree – I call it the “village idiot” problem. I grew up in the age when the internet was going to educate the world. Instead it has given us the “village idiot” problem. When we lived in villages, everybody knew who the village idiot was and would ignore them. Unfortunately, the internet has allowed “village idiots” to form their own virtual village to get affirmation of their idiotic views from each other! It’s Dunning-Kruger meets Echo Chamber!

  • I went through school in the 70’s-80’s. There’d be a couple of students who couldn’t quite grasp certain concepts in earth science. It was OK though. They’d squeak by and live their lives, albeit not as rocket scientists. Now they find each other on the internet. They find validation for their lack of understanding, and then they embrace it. They’re told “you’re one of the smart ones, you always knew they were lying to you.” Facts don’t matter at that point, and yet another conspiracy theorist is born. Throw in the special feeling conspiracies can give ppl, along with the Dunning Kruger effect, and we have what we have. This is all just an unfortunate, yet understandable side effect of the internet. This is something we’re always going to have to deal with.

  • Mr Mitchell, I would not know who you were without the Internet. But the Flat Earth Myth only dates to the Nineteenth Century. Eratosthenes determined the size of the round earth to within 10% before the time of Christ. Columbus thought the round world was a bit smaller and he had actually reached India (Hindustan / Bharat). It wasn’t until Washington Irving’s book on the life of Columbus that people thought people thought the earth was flat.

  • People who loudly hate mainstream news are telling on themselves that they listen to outright rubbish. Mainstream news is not perfect, but it at least can be held accountable if it does tell misinformation; there’s no such standard for alternative “news”, which actively shies away from being corrected.

  • Everyone thinks that the Flat Earth society is a joke. I used to as well and then I heard a neighbour arguing with someone on the phone saying the Earth is flat. It was disturbing. It was like listening to a mentally ill person vehemently defend his own insane delusions. However, while he is completely wrong, he isn’t mental. It was a display of the power of idiocy.

  • I had fully self builded 114 newtonian telescope, just based on simple mirrors. Seeing a dot in the nightsky turning into Saturn and his beautiful rings or seeing Jupiter and his moons true this simple made mirror telescope. That one still thinks it can stage the whole thing like flat earthers and thinking it is all a hoax is beyond my comprehension……

  • So I actually didn’t know this until about two weeks ago: there’s actually an international society of flat earthers…. When I found this out, I had a brain melt/implosion moment. 🤯 Just wow. I mean, I know a lot of people are stupid, but this goes beyond simple stupidity. This is psychosis- they’ve moved into their own imagined reality.

  • This is why I am so happy that the cost of space flight is going down. Unlike the billionaire who wants to take artists on an inspirational trip around the Moon, I want to take all the Flat Earthers up into space, around the planet a few times, and then dare them to tell me it’s flat. Oh… and I have no intention of bringing them back. 😀

  • This is intellectually quite lazy. Don’t get me wrong of course I think the flat Earth stuff is nuts but who cares. What this ended up being is “don’t question anything because some people think the Earth is flat.” The irony of sitting next to a sociapathic liar in the form of Hillary Clinton who represents “truth” and the mainstream is quite funny too.

  • I think this modified Carlin quote is quite terrifying: “Think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that there’s a 50% chance you are more stupid than that.” I rationalize that I am more clever than the average person because I believe in science. I know the overwhelming majority of climatologists is saying the earth is warming so I believe that. On a high school physics test I would score far above the average, but does that make me less stupid than them? The people I call stupid also has some explanation for why they are not stupid, for why I am stupid for buying into the fear mongering propaganda of the left. Everyone thinks they are above average. It’s not easy to know if you are or not. What is definitely true is that a lot of people who think they are above average are actually below average.

  • Fack yes David!!! And don’t get me started on the religious nutters and 5G tinfoil hat wearing tea bags. Everyone having a voice and social media is great but it’s often the nuttiest that shout loudest and they shout so much that the people on the fence tend to agree. Bring back reason, rationality and logic good sir. Please, for the love of humanity. Oh and Happy Easter and stay safe everyone.

  • I watched a flat earther try prove the world was flat by using a laser measurement over a long distance, if the earth is flat it wouldn’t deviate, (it’s one of the science experiments that originally proved that it was round) surprisingly he couldnt get it to work, his experiment proved the world was round 😂

  • We must learn to say to these people, “My respect for your right to your opinion does not mean I must respect how you form the opinion or that i respect the opinion itself.” The Greeks and others had it figured out about 2,200 years ago. Yeah, way before Columbus. He wasn’t the one who came up with it. It was the ancient Greeks. No rockets, no satellites, no telescopes, just naked-eye observation and intelligent thinking.

  • But there are people out there who genuinely believe the earth is flat. There are also people who believe some imaginary bloke made the world and he sits there perusal everyone and making sure they are ok and if it doesnt go “their” way then thats apparently this mans will. These people are allowed to spawn more young who will probably have the same opinion.

  • I think flat earth is a useful exercise, I.e. without those photos how can I know the earth is a globe based off of my senses. But it has to be balanced with the plain knowledge that the earth is a globe. It’s pride and nothing more that says “Because I can’t solve the riddle, the earth must be flat”. Hubris, plain and simple.

  • I understand he’s upset and I find his comedic logic hilarious. However, those people aren’t all idiots. They are desperate individuals without friends or family who accept them. They find acceptance within the flat-earther society. It’s more of a social problem than an issue of intelligence. Look at what our socially weird world has become. People believe the Earth is flat just so they can feel they belong somewhere.

  • Flat earth exists because it’s based on doubt. And you can doubt anything. It doesn’t require evidence. It only requires just a little bit of “I don’t understand this, therefore it can’t be the case.” Not a flat earth thing, but I once literally had a blind man tell me “I don’t understand it, therefore it can’t be true.” Now, let me make this clear, this is nothing against blind people. But I would think a blind person would know better than most that there are things in the world that they are simply never going to be able to fully apprehend. Anyone with a disability should. It’s like the base level of humility every single person should have. I’m a highly educated person. And the more educated I got, the more I understood just how many things in the world I don’t understand, and never will, because I did my studies in this thing and other people did their studies in those things. And along the way, I picked up the skill of being able to tell when people know what they’re talking about.

  • What’s the most absurd thing about that is that not only did we send people in space that took photos of the earth in the past. There’s literally 5 people in orbit right now aboard the International Space Station 400km above the surface of the earth that can put a webcam on one of the windows of said space station and livestream the earth showing it’s round.

  • The millennium has been a great disappointment till now. I had such high hopes. Flying cars. Instead of the world going forward, we have been going backwards. It started on 9/11. After that almost everybody lost their minds. And published their thought online. It’s like 6 billion people screaming at the same time. It’s madness. Like: science is just an opinion.

  • I love Flat Earthers, they provide endless hours of hilarity. If any of you FE’s are reading this, do you believe all of the planets in the solar system are flat or is it just earth? If you believe they’re all flat, do all of these other ‘flat’ planets just happen to be facing the Earth, in the perfect postion, all of the time, so that everyone on Earth can see all of their flat surface – all of the time? PS. If you don’t think the other planets are flat – Why is it just Earth?

  • Blindly disbelieving everything you hear regardless of evidence is very much the other side of the believing everything you hear coin. You’re both doing the same thing, except one of you thinks you’re a super smart “free thinker” main character only person in the universe that has the answers. We are living in a post-satire, post-irony era in which satire is indistinguishable from reality. I can almost guarantee that everyone has some relative who has posted an Onion article on Facebook as though it is a real headline, and almost everyone has read that headline and thought, just for a second, “well…”

  • its not the internet, it’s the fact that technology has made it easier to post things. back in the day when I used to use message boards back in the 80s and 90s, you may not have agreed with what someone said, however to access those message boards and to even get on the net, you had to have a level of knowhow and intelligence. Now…. any idiot can get on and it’s ruined. laws are coming in to censor free speech and limit content. only because the majority are so bloody stupid that it’s ruined it for those people who used to access it originally.

  • Out of all the conspiracies there are….the flat Earth one is the only one I cannot see any reason or probability with. What would be the point (without the scientific proof that Earth is a sphere) of pretending it is a sphere? Seeing as long before NASA existed it was accepted the Earth is a sphere.

  • lets have every company that makes a product today; cars, planes, computers, cameras, phones have 2 product lines, those made by scientists and engineers following “mainstream science” and those made by religious or conspiracy theory nuts, flat earthers automatically get hired as “lead alternate scientist”….which plane are you gonna fly on

  • Bereft of any political connotation, what is with all the hatred, malice, homophobia, sadism, trolling, spam and general disarray in these comments? What has David Mitchell or BBC ever done to any of you to deserve this sort of hate and disrespect?! Do you fancy making people mad on the Internet with your ostentatiousness? Is there something happening in your life that you aren’t happy about?

  • The start of this article is the most obnoxious and clear example of shows using laugh tracks to try and make whoever is talking sounds like they’re incredibly funny. They literally used it 5 times in the span of 17 seconds, once after every 3-5 words being spoken. Is this what these kinds of shows are these days? They’re so trash at comedy or just being funny in general that they have to spam the “please start laughing now” button in the hope that it is contagious enough to trigger a hehe out of the viewer, even if the effort was 0% on part of the person they are supposed to laugh with? No wonder this form of media is dying lmao
