Was The Winning Time Approved By Magic Johnson?

Magic Johnson, the NBA legend, has expressed his disapproval of HBO’s “Winning Time”, a drama series about the Los Angeles Lakers’ Showtime era. The cancellation of the series came after the season two finale of HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, which was set in 1979. Johnson, who was initially involved in the series, said that he would not watch it because it never accurately depicted the Showtime era.

The series received criticism from Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for historical inaccuracies. Johnson said that he would not watch the series because it never depicted the Showtime era accurately, while Abdul-Jabbar referred to the series as deliberately dishonest. In a new interview, Johnson said that “you can’t duplicate Showtime” when asked about the HBO series Winning Time.

Lakers showtime stars like Jerry West, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have also expressed their disapproval of the series on HBO. West went as “Deadspin” and Johnson was the latest Laker associated with the Showtime Lakers to not approve of the series.

In response to West’s legal claims against HBO, The Hollywood Reporter shared a statement from the network, who stand by Winning Time in all of its fourth-wall breaking glory. Johnson has since stated that he does not sweat the cancellation of HBO’s “Winning Time” after two seasons, stating that “none of us watched it because it was fictional”.

  • Just when i thought Westhead couldn’t piss me off any further 😂😂 he takes it to another level! In real life Westhead must of really left a bad taste with the whole franchise cause in that Antoine Fuqua Laker Doc there was nothing great said bout him and from what i remember they gave Pat Riley all credit for their wins

  • I’ve read Showtime by Jeff Perlman, which this show is based. Based on player and exec interviews, I’d say Westhead is absolutely in the wrong and was a horrible NBA coach at this time. In reality everybody had a problem with The System except for Kareem. Magic was just the most vocal about it. I’ve never read that he actually had that convo with Kareem about going to NY and how he’d been devalued by the team. But he really was making players run to spots and wait until he gave them a signal on what to do. He actually called a time out once just to yell at player about a bad shot. As the show portrayed, he only kept Rambis to spite West, which showed his level of immaturity and insecurity. Magic had the courage to speak up when other players wouldn’t or would only speak off the record (I’m looking at you Norm Nixon)—This was not adequately portrayed in the show.

  • Weasthead was full of himself. He needed to humble himself and make adjustments to his system, which he did at Loyola Marymount with Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble putting up numbers. Then Hank dying on the court happened that team was primed to make a Final Four run Mike D’Antoni’s Phoenix Suns offense was basically a corbon copy of Weastheads system with a tweek here and there.

  • I think the B story of the Buss Family is not that bad. Jerry Buss is a dysfunctional person, obsessed with business and winning. You can see they made 2 monopoly scenes before and after his story with Honey. In the 1st he was abusive towards his kids and the only one that understood his motives for lashing out was Jeanie. The 2nd Monopoly scene shows a contempt buss, too relaxed and not focused on his obsessions, he is in love with Honey so he is distracted from the objective. Jeanie is upset because she understand the true nature of his father, which is what made the Lakers and the family successful. She does not want this woman controlling his father, she is afraid he is becoming soft in a way. For most people finding love and be happy with their family would be a good thing, but when it comes to Dr. Buss he is meant to be obsessed with his work, love is too much of a distraction to him and will probably not end well. I think the writers of the show wants to diversify from just basketball to make the show more appealing to a wider audience, I think they were brilliant at this in season one and I hope they keep it up in this 2nd season.

  • Boy they sure didn’t do any favors for Paul Westhead in this series… also it did take Magic until 86-87 to finally take his spot as one of the best players of the decade… because he choked in the 81 playoffs, ran into the inevitable 76ers buzz saw them only lose one playoff team in 83, he choked in 84 (despite the Lakers being more athletic), 85 was Kareem’s swan song as an elite player & he was the main reason the Lakers finally beat the Celtics, 86 the rockets had the size and guard play to run them off the court (and maybe if their guards didn’t get kicked out of the league for cocaine and Ralph Sampson body didn’t break down maybe the Rockets win multiple Titles), and finally Magic was the man in 87 (which I feel Are one the Lakers greatest teams)…
