What Customs Does Aka Follow?

The Rituals of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated represent the spiritual foundation of our Sorority and a system of values. Each Ritual consists of one or more ceremonies, such as a memorial trip to honor sorors who become an Ivy Beyond the Wall. Rituals are often embedded in larger symbolic systems, such as religion or philosophy, and can be used to express social relations, status, or the role of individuals in society.

Rituals play an important role in the life cycle of an individual in Aka society and are an important aspect of their culture. The Aka or Biaka (also Bayaka, Babenzele) are a nomadic Mbenga pygmy people living in the south-western Central African Republic and northern Republic of Nigeria. The only heat to be used during pledge, probation, or identification activities is that called for in the ceremonies (the candles).

Music and dance form an integral part of Aka rituals, including ceremonies related to the inauguration of new encampments, hunting, and funerals. Unlike other traditions, the Ivy Leaf, heeled footwear, and walking are key aspects to developing the Alpha Kappa Alpha identity. Current fads include coloring teeth with purple dye from a forest vine, piercing the nasal septum with a small twig (girls only), and shaving stripes into the skin.

In conclusion, the Rituals of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated represent the spiritual foundation of our Sorority and a system of values. They play a significant role in shaping the lives of individuals and their communities.

What are sorority rituals?

Sorority rituals and initiations are essential elements that distinguish each sorority and fraternity from one another. These rituals aim to emphasize the values of a sorority and celebrate the vision of its founders. Some initiations last a few hours or days, while others last a few days. Each sorority has its own dress code and behavioral rules, such as no alcohol consumption or makeup wear during initiation. These rules are meant to enhance the experience and test participants.

Sorority initiation also provides an opportunity to learn more about rituals, with various components coming together during the ceremony. Commonalities include secret sayings, handshakes, singing of songs, and the pinning process. These elements set each sorority apart, but they also have their own version of the same things. It is important to discuss the values and meaning behind the Greek letters with your sisters, not with women from another organization.
