What Does Chaos Magic’S Reverse Entail?

In the DC Comics, chaos and order magic are two opposing magic types. Chaos magic is associated with violence, destruction, darkness, while order magic is associated with peace, healing, and light. Wanda Maximoff is one of the few practitioners of chaos magic, and it has been introduced to the MCU through her. The Lords of Chaos are higher magical beings representing chaos, often acting through empowering their agents and followers.

WandaVision has introduced chaos magic to the MCU, and her Chaos Magic is the polar opposite of Doctor Strange’s Order magic. Chaos magic is entropy and its endless desire to spread, while order magic aims to contain everything and restore order. Wanda will be a significant part of the Doctor Strange sequel, and her Chaos Magic is the polar opposite of Doctor Strange’s Order magic.

Order magic allows for the reconstruction of reality and restoring order to a broken universe. Chaos magick is a form of magic where the focus is on studying why magic works rather than how it works. In chaos magic, gnosis or the gnostic state refers to an altered state of consciousness in which a person’s mind is focused on only one point, thought.

While there is no special type of magic that is shaped with order, all non-wild magic is the opposite of wild magic. In this episode of Pagan Happy Hour, we will discuss Chaos Magic and its implications for the MCU’s Scarlet Witch and other multiverse superheroes.

What is the opposite of chaotic evil?

In Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), alignment is a system that categorizes the ethical and moral perspectives of player, non-player, and creature characters. Players make two choices for characters based on their views on “law” versus “chaos” and “good” versus “evil”. This system allows for nine alignments in combination. Later editions of D&D have shifted away from tying alignment to specific game mechanics and instead use it as a roleplaying guide.

Ian Livingstone criticized alignment as arbitrary and unreal, but it works well if played well and provides a useful structural framework for shaping characters, governments, and worlds. D&D co-creator Gary Gygax credits the inspiration for the alignment system to the fantasy stories of Michael Moorcock and Poul Anderson.

  • When we say our path is ever growing, we mean it! Im 7 years into mine and I was never big on labels so I didnt dive into the different types of magick (green, storm, kitchen, chaos, etc). I always wanted to be whatever drew me in. But as you tell me all this…I have been a chaos magician the whole time and didnt even know it! The belief system (or lack thereof) especially reasonates and i felt like most didnt understand me when I tried to explain it. It is so refreshing to learn all this. Thank you💕

  • Found your vid through the witchcraft reddit and I found it very enlightening. With choas magick getting more attention over the last few years, I would not have guessed it had come from that far back. I also have discovered that my personal mindset and practice falls in line with the 6 principles as you have outlined them, so it would seem I am a natural chaos magician! Thank you for your vid, as it has provided me with a new path of research to follow, once I have finished up my current line of research and study.

  • I just stumbled across this article researching chaos magick and I wanted to say a few things: I really appreciate you having excellent audio, I appreciate how informative and through you are and most importantly I really really appreciate you getting straight to the point without any opinions in between. A lot of times you come across “educational” articles of the craft and its a lot of personal journey and opinions sprinkled in between. ✅subscribed

  • I think keeping your ego under control is a better option than completely going for ego death. Ego is also a thing to keep one from going base primal . Going completely animal. So instead of killing the very thing you’re born with, just try to mind it more and find out what makes it swell so that you can keep the swelling down.

  • I have watched and listened to a ton of articles labelled as an introduction to Chaos Magick, but at the end I have not learned anything at all and certainly found anything to build upon. I am only half way through this and already I have a much deeper understanding of what it actually is, and how to “do it” . Well done Ivy, important and concise information clearly explained ! I have subscribed, thank you

  • The second you said the name “Phil Hine,” is the second I smashed the subscribe button! There is so much in the occult community that calls itself chaos magick these days that has absolutely nothing to do with the dearly loved magickal current that started me on my own descent into deeper, more advanced magick years ago…a current I still embrace to this day, that I wasn’t sure if what you embraced was the same current that spoke to my heart, as well! I came here to see if, in fact, your form of chaos magick is indeed my own, and it is so wonderful to find a fellow member of my tribe on here! I can’t wait to see more of your articles! Thanks so much for this website!💖

  • Came here from your article on servitors (excellent article btw!), and I am speechless. I’ve heard the terms ‘chaos magic’ and ‘chaos magician’ here and there over the years without ever really understanding what they meant. This primer article has given me so many ‘oh! I do that!’ and ‘that’s freakishly similar to how I move in the world’ moments. Things like ‘if everything is true, then nothing is true’ and vice versa. Multiple realities or universes that exist all at once. Thoughts and feelings I didn’t have names for for how I thought the world worked but had little validation for (not that everything we do in life needs outside validation, but it certainly doesn’t hurt). I shouldn’t have come here when I’m in the middle of finals season, but I have every intention of coming back and exploring this more next week! Thank you for the thought and care you put into your articles, Your explanations are clear and I can follow them, and I can only imagine the challenge of synthesizing complex concepts for newbies (even though I started practicing magic in some form almost 20 years ago, I still feel like a total newb).

  • Sooo chaos magick sounds very similar to what i believed for many years? Like every god and goddesses are kinda real in some sort of form because people believe in them and in the same moment they aren’t. When i was a child I used to ask “moon, every god, goddesses, fairys and powers that hear me and wanted to help” to help with my wishes. And it worked for me

  • It sounds to me like the Tao of magic. When the Tao is named, it is no longer the Tao. Everything and nothing… The Tao Te Ching has been my favorite book for almost 30 years. Stephen Mitchell wrote my most favorite interpretation of Lao Tsu’s amazing writings. Chaos magic sounds perfect for me. Peer reviewed journals and neuroscience and the ways magic and dopamine are connected… just awesome

  • Holy shit, Ivy. I’m 15 years into practice and I just took the time to learn the types of craft and this was the first article I found. You were truly put in my path to kickstart my next growth phase! I am absolutely a Chaotic witch capital C, I could tell from the first principle. I am always explaining to my loved ones that nothing matters and everything matters. What you believe in your reality is true, so I believe that you believe, and I hold that in my heart. Beautiful article, you’re an amazing teacher! 🥰🥰🥰

  • I’d heard the term thrown around but hadn’t paid any mind until I watched this. Surprised now, didn’t realize my beliefs & way of practicing align with the principals. Although I’ve wavered a bit on a higher power/source/collective consciousness. Ever since I was a child in Bible school arguing with my teachers that all religions were just different ways of interpreting the same thing, the place where all our energy comes from. Left the Lutheran church as a teen and started studying world religions, but never felt like one ‘fit’ me. I was drawn to magical practice because of its openness and ability to make it whatever one wishes & works for them. Really appreciated this article, thank you especially for the book recommendations! 💜

  • It is inCREDIBLE and I am SO glad that I found this article. I’ve been looking forward to start practicing but for now I’ve mainly only used Tarot cards and gathering ressources to develop my own unique perspective towards the occult. I’m an anarchist, and none of the schools of thought I found really spoke to me, so I had resigned myself to practise a very solitary path by making up my own spirituality from scratch. AND OMG IT TURNS OUT MY VERY APPROACH IS A THING ALREADY? I feel like I can learn SO much more now!!! Thank you so much for your work~ In my whereabouts I started to document what seems most interesting for me to begin with, which consists of shadow work, alterted states, seasonal rituals, constantly challenging my perspective but also studying myths, anthropology, psychology, and incorporating fictions that I connect with into my practice. I’m agnostic and I do not pretend to know any truth, my current goal with my practice is to explore the limits of what can be as a way to know myself (how can I know who I am if I don’t find my limits ?), and to take time to simply exist and celebrate whatever it is I’m feeling and experiencing with mindfulness, as a way to be more at peace, to cultivate a hopeful heart, to connect with others and the land, and to become a better person. Can’t wait to start my magical journey~

  • Thank you for this article! I’ve just started to watch your articles and I’m loving all that I have watched so far. What I loved about this particular article is that I found myself!!! I have been studying, in a Trad, for 7 years now, and I love it, but I still didn’t completely understand my role in witchcraft. Now I understand who and what I am. I’m really looking forward to continuing my journey through your teachings. Blessed be!

  • I find it fascinating how my own development over time leaving organized religion I was raised in, seaking knowledge from other practices and cultures as teen in college and beyond etc, coming to believe everything can be true and untrue at the same time, my respect and interest in various cultures etc, this is very affirming

  • Just swapped to this new website so now you have two subs from me! All those misconceptions about chaos magic, and posts like “lemme roll out of bed and hex with cheeto dust” – like, ok, but I think that’s just you dude. Thanks for this long description, because I knew very little about this path before. The relationship between The Gods™ and the practitioner really resonates with me. Awesome article, friend!

  • Thank you so much for this article 🙂 I’ve been doing this naturally my whole life and denied it until I was 18 due to being Christian. When I finally left Christianity at 17, it still took me a year and some change to accept that this was okay. Since then, I haven’t looked back. I’ll be turning 19 this year. I feel like this article was speaking right to me and I’m so happy that I’ve found it. My favorite part was about the fictional characters. I do that all the time lol. 💖

  • While perusal the article, I found myself agreeing with some of the established principles for this line of magick; questioning society and most established rules, cataloging everything. So this sounds like something I could learn more of to feel more confident in my “spiritual” journey (not sure what to call it lol). Do you have any suggestions or even a article for how to open myself up to walking this path, because as much as I find it intriguing, I also hear myself saying how “it isn’t real” or having doubts in my ability.

  • I really enjoy your articles, the very well I’m very factual. Enjoy this article and chaos magic has opened my eyes a lot because for years I have never really practiced any certain path just what I felt was right and in doing so this article has woke me up to a lot of things. Thank you for the information that you have provided and it’s been very helpful and any book recommendations. I always appreciate it especially if they are audiobooks. I’m visually impaired. It’s hard to read for a long time thank you very much and have a great week.❤

  • I’m a beginner in the Magickal ways and I have always liked to write stories as a kid and read comics, Grant Morrison’s Hypersigil has always intrigued me I want to master that. Along with regular sigils. I like to think of myself as a Magickal Writing Wizard lol I just want to control my own life and nothing else. Although lately, I’ve been receiving a lot of Norse symbols in my life for some reason.

  • I have been doing this since the beginning of my practice without I was doing it. I have been practicing for 3 years and sigils magick was one of the first things I learned I didn’t even realise that had a tie to chaos magick and I absolutely love sigils and being creative with them. I only recently started to dive deeper into chaos magick because of the goddess Eris as she came into my recently and has been teaching me chaos magick and also teaching me to find peace with the chaos. I find it so interesting how I have been doing this and I wasn’t even aware of it. However, I do have one question tho, does dream work link into chaos magick since that is subconscious work too?

  • Do you have a article on detailed record keeping. This is my biggest struggle in my practice and I want to improve it but am never sure what all I need to record and I am always missing information to assess results at future times. I never got to do experiments in science class, I feel that would have helped me a lot. Or maybe you have a reference source for that?

  • I think chaos magick is perfect for my beliefs. My mother’s maiden name is literally Chaos! A psychic told me her dad, my grandpa, was a guardian angel of mine, which I already knew, but was beautiful to hear. Questions: how can I be sure that a deity, or practice, isn’t working for me when I am so new and have yet to hone my psychic intuition? Any recommendations on deities or practices for self confidence? Finally, I am on one Rx med, but weening off of this year (under my Drs supervision.) I know my Rx affects my dreams; I also feel it somewhat hinders my spiritual side. I cannot stop “cold turkey,” but going Rx free is a long process. I am hesitant to jump in, as I am concerned my results could be “false negatives” until I am off all prescriptions. Is prescription interference an unnecessary worry?

  • I really felt home after you brought up Chaos Magick believes in all yet none🥺 Ive always believed we choose our truths and give power to it. I didn’t necessarily know what I believed in until a couple years ago, and I always wanted to respect others beliefs. So thats a way of life Ive formed and lived by since. I am excited to see what else ut entails:) Also!! I love your articles!! Youve been an extreme help while Ive been studying spiritual practices and magick! It started with learning of Thoughtforms from Reddit, to days of nonstop youtube, googling, books, and what ever else I can get my hands on to study the things Id like to get into. Sorry, dont mean to talk about myself again. Point is, you have been a blessing, and Im sure so many others have an outpouring amount of gratitude towards you and what you do for the Magick and Psychological communities! Blessed✨☀️🌙✨

  • I think the only reason I never knew that what I do is chaos magic (I had to ask of someone “hey, have you heard of chaos magic?” and their response boiling down to “…dont you practice it???” Never forget the importance of peer review LMAO) is that I always thought sigils had to be paper and ink (nope, turns out knitting and sewing works just fine) and that because I don’t keep what I think of as written records as being “real” (I just dump all of the thoughts into text messages to the same friend). I’d love for someone to address that at some point, but frn this is good to know 😂

  • Thank you for the information about Chaos Magick 🙋‍♂, so if I understand correctly Chaos Magick is mainly linked to manifestation (using all resources regardless of their origin, but that they work), and everything applied to both internal and external results, but it is not a path to transcend consciousness to higher spiritual levels. What would High Magic be like in general? thank you!🙏

  • Just watched the article. I have a couple questions. 1. Do chaos magicians/witches ever choose to work with a certain pantheon/ patron deity along with others? 2. Do chaos practitioners identify as either magician or witch exclusively. Both questions are a bit subjective and probably more for other people’s reference but I didn’t know if there was a distinction made in regards to the actual practitioner. I ask because I feel I fit in with all this except for the two questions above. I feel comfortable assuming the chaos label but I also want to know if there will be differences down the road so that I can expect that. Thank you for your time and articles!

  • Is moving your bed to the dining room and the dining room table to the bedroom because you sleep better and do better mentally, emotionally and spiritually that way an example? We are conditioned to have the bed in the bedroom, not many Americans sleep in the dining room. Just asking. It’s getting rid of conditioning, it’s a personal experience etc.

  • Beautiful article, great information-I wish that I could give it more likes. I’m definitely sharing it with my daughter. This resonates with me so much. I feel like this sounds like where I belong. It feels more experimental and more “scientific method” for sussing out what works for the individual and what doesn’t. Results based. I’ve been having a crisis of faith thanks to the political maneuverings and control measures taken by the church, and their bullsh-t control/fear based manipulations have driven me right out of their midst and towards believing in MYSELF for once instead of an external power. It’s very empowering. Gone is “blind faith” in anything but ME. Proof should be important to anyone, especially when whatever it is exerts itself and power over other people’s lives and choices. Frick that. MY life, choices are MINE. Period. Consider me one of the liberated ones, I’m finally FREE. 😂

  • Okay so genuinely asking from a skeptic standpoint, not trying to offend but rather put away these thoughts myself- if in chaos magick it’s all (in very short) “in your head,” then where is the magic? I feel like my own spiritual beliefs fall along the lines of chaos magick but I almost… don’t want them to bc I want things to be real if that makes sense 😅 if it’s not literally real, then in my current view, it kind of loses its point. Ex: correspondences. If there’s no definite association with an “ingredient,” then does it matter what you use it all? What is the point of the magickal practices if in a sense it’s a placebo in your mind anyway? Also, with deities- reaching out to, having a relationship with, etc, feels too abstract if it’s not grounded in anything tangible? Sorry if this is long winded, it’s been a long day, but genuinely just want to figure this out for myself bc tbh these sort of beliefs are what I feel like are holding me back spiritually. Thanks in advance 💜

  • Chaos Magic, it comes from within and manifest without learning how to do it. So You get an happening by inner strong Magic and will. That is what i have i can change realty to my believe and will, I use only Good, The Almighty gave Me that gift to heal the World, and keep the Universe in Balance. For me i never learned from a book i jus have the Knowledge getting by Birth. This magic in case of emergency !? can be very strong, It is the strongest Magic there is. It can change the situation on Earth instantly, to get all in Balance.

  • I think that to truly be ideologically free and against any dogma, the mainstream psychological model should also be questioned. Everything should be questioned. All models of reality are man made. Just because some sound more sciencey doesn’t make them more true and less of a product of the human mind.

  • Wow, this is…. not at all what I thought Chaos Magick was. I had looked into it briefly when I was first searching for labels for my practice, and I found many articles from chaos magick practitioners with all these rules and specific gods and you have to do this and not that or bad things will happen… I just assumed that it was not for me and never looked deeper into it. But, if I were to go by what you describe here, I must be one because it describes me to a “t”.

  • I’ve seem to have been doing this for the past 40 years. Only, while I agree with the 1st principle and found it was also my 1st realization on my path, I do disagree with your use of the word ‘ritual.’ To me, dogmatism IS ritual. Religion is doing the same thing over and over and over, ie. washing your hands before you eat religiously. And when it comes to spiritual paths we all know religion is stuffed to the gills with dogmatism, and rituals. My approaches via ever evolving forms of contemplations, and a symmetrically outer practice to that inner art, also constantly evolve.

  • The Most High Reconfirmation. I am chaos born from dark matter. NOT wild, but orderly chaos. Like a tornado or an earthquake. Ordered Chaos. I been doing this my whole life. seeing God/Source in the bible, in vodu, in witchcraft, in spirituality. This world is false, and I see why God wants me to work in chaos. To break down the routines I have adjusted myself to over my life time. ( ether chaos.

  • 1&4 are the biggest disagreements for me. But other than that, chaos magic resonates strongly with me. Even #5, as the 5 of us (people in the body) each have different beliefs, though we “live” in the same “world”. With #1, I believe that there has to be a universal truth. I’m okay with being wrong, and want to know if I am. I’m constantly experimenting, testing, and questioning my beliefs, which led me to the religion I’m in, and “back-up religions” I’m prepared to go into if this is truly disproven. It’s why I’m so weird compared to other church members, but why people are always praising my understanding. (Or in one case, asking me not to tall about such deep doctrine stuff as it’s pushing ppl away. I have a problem with that guy) Religion isn’t a way of life for me, it’s a lab table. I need to make sure it’s level, have knowledge of the equipment inside, and keep it clean and ready to use at all times. Others are like “Jesus is real, and that’s what matters” when I’m like “Jesus is real, so what are the implications and how can I use that to my advantage”. With 4, I see the ego as important. Humans are better than other lifeforms for that reason, and it needs to be fed to grow stronger. I remember years ago I was arguing with someone about why humans are different than other animals, they said “that’s the ego” when I was describing why. Despite that being said as proof I was wrong (a label doesn’t actually prove anything, just identifies it), my reaction was the ego is good, and I’ve yet to be disproven.
