John van der Put, also known as Piff the Magic Dragon, is a British magician and comedian born on June 9, 1980, in London, England. He was inspired to become a magician after seeing Jerry Sadowitz on the BBC2 show Stuff the White Rabbit. At 18, he became a me, and he performed under the stage name Piff the Magic Dragon.

What’s great about the Judge Cuts round is that one of performers before Piff, I don’t remember his name, at 9:36 on the left, was a magician as well. That magician did the exact same trick that Piff did, he made a selected card appear in an impossible location. And he’s good looking, he’s great with magic, but he doesn’t have much stage presence, he came off nervous, he doesn’t have a persona or schtick the way that Piff does. So it really shows the contrast. Their magic was the same, but Piff’s personality and humor got him the golden buzzer and the other guy went home. We don’t remember his name. Piff excels with his persona, not his magic, not his looks, not even his dog, although that helps. Piff is a great character, and that is why we remember him years later.
I just realized the trick on the Quarterfinals one. The trick is that there was no trick. The dog was in that box from beginning to end. It was lucky for him that Howie did not choose the one the dog was in because of the subtle hints. However, even if he decided to choose it, Piff would talk him out of choosing another. If not, he would do that trick where you have 4 suits of cards and eliminate each one by reasoning what you didn’t choose. However, since he was lucky enough for howie to not choose the dog until the end, then he wouldn’t have to resort to using such trick, therefore, the trick is that there was no trick.
Such a great performer I especially enjoyed how the ‘Dog or No Dog’ trick was… not really a trick, I think Mr Piffles was really in that box, there was no real way to sneak him into it for the reveal. If Howie had chosen that box at any point, they would have brought out the woodchipper of destiny, which of course isn’t a woodchipper and has a pillow or similar to catch him, and end the trick in a different way But all his tricks are kinda like that, really simple but with multiple outs, because he as a performer could make just about anything work You can kinda easily spot the trick, and when you do, even that’s actually hilarious… like 16:57, he just took the ace of clubs out of his case and you can see him being really bad at palming it in his off hand while he does the coffee thing. You can also spot it between his fingers while he’s showing off the bread. Or at 21:34, when she has to kick the thing off stage because it didn’t go through, it’s all just hilarious … And I love him bringing in P&T, they’re like the polar opposite of him and they do a good job showing off that this style wouldn’t work for most people
