Ole Miss University has announced its new mascot, Tony the Landshark, as a tribute to former Rebel Tony Fein. The anthropomorphic black bear replaced Colonel Reb, who was the official mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels, the collegiate athletic teams of the University of Mississippi. The CRF believes that Colonel Reb is the only mascot for Ole Miss, despite a fraudulent “student-led” poll in 2010 that introduced “Rebel the Black Bear” as the administration’s new on-field mascot.
The Landshark is a fresh look for a school still transforming its identity, as it is a tribute to the first Rebel to throw “Fins Up”, Tony Fein. The Rebels have been using Tony the Landshark as their mascot for the past seven years, but the future of the school’s mascot remains uncertain.
On March 29, Ole Miss Athletics announced that the Red Solo Cup will become the official and only mascot for the university’s athletic teams. Tony the Landshark is simply an “on the field mascot”—like Bevo for UT Austin or Aubie the Tiger for Auburn. The Rebels are still the Rebels, and Tony the Landshark is a fresh look for a school still transforming its identity.
