The Kansas City Chiefs have been using a wolf named KC Wolf as their mascot since 1989. The character was elected to the National Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006 and remains the only NFL mascot to be inducted. KC Wolf has brought energy, excitement, and laughter to the team since its introduction in 1989. Dan Meers, who has played KC Wolf for 34 years, has been wearing him for the past 30 odd years. Prior to becoming the mascot, Meers was ‘Truman the Tiger’, a mascot for the University of Missouri.
KC Wolf became the NFL’s first official modern mascot, breaking new ground. The Chiefs adopted the wolf as their mascot to honor a group of passionate and loud fans known as the “wolf pack”. The original Chiefs mascot was named Warpaint, a horse ridden by a man wearing a full Indian chief headdress, from the mid-1960s. KC Wolf replaced this mascot in 1989.
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Kansas. The mascot Warpaint (1963–1988, 2009–2020) was replaced by KC Wolf in 1989. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Dan Meers, who has played KC Wolf for 34 years.
