What Is The Mysterious Bards’ Circle?

The “Mystic Circle of Bards”, also known as the Gorsedd of the Bards, is an association of poets, writers, artists, and other individuals who have made significant contributions to Wales, its culture, and the Welsh language. Princess Elizabeth (now Queen) was initiated into the Mystic Circle of Bards by Archdruid Crwys Williams at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. The Gorsedd of the Bards organizes ceremonies and prizes at the National Eisteddfod and is based on the Welsh Gorsedd of Bards.

The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD), a Neo-Druidic organization based in England, is based in part on the Welsh Gorsedd of Bards. In modern times, a Bard is one who sees their creativity as an innate spiritual ability and chooses to nurture that ability partly or wholly with Druidism.

In 1946, Princess Elizabeth was initiated into the Mystic Circle of Bards by Archdruid Crwys Williams, who led her into the sacred circle of stones. In Glamorganshire, the Maen Chwŷf, a huge slab of slate stone, near Eglwysilan, was seen. The Gorsedd of the Bards includes poets, writers, musicians, artists, and individuals who have made a significant contribution to Wales, its language, and its culture.

Information about the history, rituals, and members of the Gorsedd of the Bards can be found in sources, activities, and videos.

What is the symbol of the bards?

The Awen, a Welsh word meaning “muse or inspiration”, represents creative powers in action and is often used in international online casinos. It is derived from the rays of the rising sun and represents attributes of Love, Justice, and Truth in the Bardic Gorseth. The Awen is also a symbol of the Gorsedh or Gathering of Bards and appears on plastrons (breastplates).

The Awen’s connection to Celtic culture offers a unique and mystical appeal in online casinos, where themes of luck and fate are prevalent. Casino games like casumo games incorporate these symbols to attract players looking for a blend of traditional Celtic mysticism and modern gaming experiences.

The Secretary’s Plastron, made by Tan Dyvarow in 1967, was commissioned by Gwrek Map Melyn after Map Melyn died. It includes a quill pen, the Awen, and Celtic knot-work. The Admissions Secretary, who administers the admission of New Bards, wears the original Secretary’s plastron, which is similar to the Secretary but smaller.

Incorporating elements like Awen helps differentiate offerings in international online casinos, appealing to players who appreciate both the thrill of the game and the cultural significance behind the symbols they encounter.

What is bard magic called?

The bard is a playable character class in many editions of the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy role-playing game. They are versatile, capable of combat and magic, with divine magic in earlier editions and arcane magic in later editions. Bards use their artistic talents to induce magical effects and are loosely based on the special magic that music holds in stories like the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The class is inspired by Taliesin, Homer, Will Scarlet, and Alan-a-Dale.

The name is originally Celtic, descended from the Old Celtic ‘bardo’, which in turn produced the Scottish and Irish Gaelic ‘bard’. The term was initially considered a term of great respect among the Welsh but one of contempt among the Scots. Throughout history, the bard has existed in various forms, with bardic traditions spanning various personal approaches, public conceptions, and historical contexts.

A bard is traditionally defined as a poet, especially one who writes impassioned, lyrical, or epic verse. In Dungeons and Dragons, bards are a playable class centered on accessing magic through artistic expression.

Who is the goddess of the bards?

Brigid the Goddess, born on February 1st, was a nurturing goddess who set up a school in Kildare, teaching her followers how to gather healing herbs, tend livestock, and forge iron into tools. They spent thirty years in service to her, learning, tending to her sacred grove, working, and teaching. Brigid’s grove had an ancient oak tree, a healing well, and a sacred flame. Nineteen of her followers, all women, tended the flame, which was tended by Brigid herself on the 20th day.

Brigid was said to reward offerings, leading to the custom of throwing coins into wells to honor her. She inspired poets and musicians and was married to Senchán Torpéist, the author of the Tain Bo Cuainge. One day, two lepers came to her for healing, and she instructed them to bathe each other in her sacred well until their sores were gone. The first leper bathed his companion faithfully, but the healed man couldn’t touch the other, leading Brigid to strike him down with leprosy again.

She then wrapped the other leper in her mantle, and his disease was gone instantly. Brigid the Goddess was a powerful figure in Irish mythology, known for her teachings and inspiring influence on poets and musicians.

Is A Druid a girl?

Irish mythology features several female druids, often sharing cultural and religious roles with their male counterparts. These female druids include bandruí, Bodhmall, Tlachtga, Biróg, Bé Chuille, Relbeo, Dornoll, and Gallizenae. Bandruí, meaning woman-druid, is found in tales like Táin Bó Cúailnge, Bodhmall, Tlachtga, Biróg, Bé Chuille, Relbeo, Dornoll, and Gallizenae.

Biróg, another bandruí of the Tuatha Dé Danann, plays a key role in an Irish folktale where Balor attempts to thwart a prophecy by imprisoning his daughter Eithne in Tory Island. Bé Chuille, daughter of the woodland goddess Flidais, is sometimes described as a sorceress. Other bandrúi include Relbeo, a Nemedian druid, and Dornoll, a bandrúi in Scotland who trained heroes in warfare.

The Gallizenae, or Gallisenae, were virgin priestesses of the Île de Sein off Pointe du Raz, Finistère, western Brittany. Their existence was first mentioned by Greek geographer Artemidorus Ephesius and later by Greek historian Strabo. They were forbidden to men, but the women came to the mainland to meet their husbands. Pomponius Mela explains that the Gallizenae acted as both councilors and practitioners of the healing arts.

How old is Druid?

The Druids were a religious and social order that existed from the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD, with their traditions dating back to at least 3000 BC. They primarily occupied Britain, Ireland, and northern Gaul. The Druids’ origins are debated, but classical texts suggest they originated from a mix of indigenous neolithic tribes and Celts during a wave of Indo-European migration around 2000 BC. The Druid priesthood lasted around 100 BC.

Can you be a bard druid?

Druid bards and druids can serve as powerful support roles, with their main ability scores not aligning. By using wild shapes, they can compensate for low physical stats and focus on their spells. Druid bards have an incredible keep away game, allowing them to buff their party or summons while keeping themselves out of harm’s way. They are among the most versatile classes, and DM discretion allows them to use their bardic performance in an animal form.

This allows them to fly around in a wild shape, use their action for repeating spells, and use their bonus action for bardic inspirations. Both druids and bards can become powerful party buffs, skill monkeys, damaging spellcasters, and healers. When played correctly, a druid bard and summons can practically be a party on their own.

What does bard symbolize?

The “male-ness” of bards was most noticeable in cultures with patriarchal religious structures and inheritance laws. Bards were originally associated with Goddess-worship but also represented respect for the female principle. Scholars generally reject oral traditions for permanent records, such as manuscripts, as they may not include women bards. However, additional resources affirm the existence and importance of women as fully-trained bards, such as the 18th-century Irish gathering where a woman was one of the seven harpers. Additionally, notes about systematic destruction of records by Church zealots and government officials charged with correcting inheritance records have been collected but not yet integrated.

The true-bard, the thoroughly wonderful and honestly-complete original, survived historically well into the SCA “period” but was a child of earlier times. Essentials of the quintessential bard include the tradition of oral histories, the role as a religious teacher, the association with “magick” such as prophecy or divination, and the incidental existence as an entertainer. No one aspect is more or less important than another, and the listing provided is not complete or definitive.

  • Wrote by the Greeks. Druids as they called them selves as what the Greeks called Albion Council leaders were ancient and had a long lineage. Its understood that Druids wrote and logged nothing down, it was forbidden. Albion included the whole of the British Isles. The Druids that resided here got pretty much wiped out during Roman invasion and their control over a few hundred years. It would however be amazing to think Druids somehow remained and kept their traditions alive, which I believe took a lifetime to master. Imagine if they existed today and was sercret in their existence and they still acted as a council to the old Celtic Pictish Lineage of European Celts of which would have related to Elizabeths heritage

  • The druid organization of the Circle of Bards were composed of Poets, Artists, writers, storytellers, historians & musicians- Not much different than the Court of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine’s Troubadours of poets & writers of ancient times. Many people on this topic are insulting Queen Elizabeth’s religion by her joining the druid group- People are so quick to accuse- Ignorant people.

  • Man, all these people who don’t know that Christianity literally came from Brythonic Druidism. Did they carry out Human Sacrifice? Yes! Bit different however as it would be volunteers who would do it. As they firmly believed in re-incarnation and by sacrificing their lives for a better harvest and such they would come back as a human once again. This had direct parallels with Jesus and him Sacrificing himself for the worlds sins.

  • the nowadays “druids” are not at all the actual ancient tradition of true Druids … they are ridiculous folklore, one can be respected as a kind of try to make Druidism live again, but its rather a bad movie …maybe elsewhere the true tradition is alive, however very secret, a transmission from mouth to ear, it’s all. no human or animal sacrifice. about this ceremony with the queen, it’s worrying because obviously she’s participating to something fake, and why not evil ? so she gives her caution to a false tradition.

  • Anyone going to mention the fact that the current PM of the UK is a Hindu Pagan? Oh that’s right, he’s a foreign pagan with foreign traditions and religion so that is good and diverse. How dare the Welsh try to foster and preserve their ancient traditions (probably more rooted in and based off Medievalism than ancient paganism to be honest, the Welsh have be Christian since the time of Arthur). No, make no mention of it people. Your own ancient traditions are the ones that are evil and don’t belong. Its the new, completely foreign traditions that are good and welcome. 🤦‍♂️

  • Some absolute foolishness in the comments here. Some people really ought to make an effort to learn a little about Welsh culture, the National Eisteddfod and the C18th “Druid Revival” which was rooted in Romanticism, Christianity and Welsh national pride. While you do that please also refer to the writings of Iolo Morgannwg which inspired much of rhe revival (almost all of which is entirely fictional) and also learn a little about the strong Welsh Christian tradition through the Welsh Methodists, Welsh Baptists, and the Undeb yr Annibynwyr Cymraeg. Please for the love of all things holy step out of your insular American “Christianity” and develop a broader world view.

  • 1 Corinthians 11:3-5 New International Version 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man,(a) and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
