I’m on my second Mk 1 in 13 years. The first one died from me slamming it on my desk after it lost connection for the millionth time, bringing me to the biggest issue the mk1 has: The charging cover tends to bow over time, scratching along the centreline. The bowing eventually (to be fair, after years) leads to the black feet no longer sitting totally flush with the surface below, so it sort of rocks side to side on a flat, hard surface. Given I use mine directly on my desk, I eventually just removed the battery cover. The batteries contribute to lost connections if one isn’t gentle, their collective weight and a bowed cover being the reason. So yeah, I’d buy a second generation mouse today, but wonder to myself how half-baked it is given the original came out 15 YEARS ago. Same 1000dpi, no new touch fidelity and gestures, absurd charging setup. A vital peripheral for millions of Apple users and it feels like the R&D team is made up of 5 stray cats. I left this review because it’s the holidays and I’m trawling YouTube aimlessly.
I have the first one. To each their own, but I like the fact that you change batteries and you can always opt for rechargeable batteries anyway. When the MM2’s battery wears off you have to buy a new one. Ik it’s ages from when you buy it till it wears off, but it’s a nice thought that you may never have to get rid of the MM1 for the most part.
I have a Logitech MX Master 3. Arguably a great mouse. But the battery is not good anymore, and I hate that it’s glued inside the mouse somewhere. I’m completely fed up with the consumer attitude of “just buying a new mouse”. I’d MUCH rather just buy a well built mouse with a battery compartment. I have a bunch of AA and AAA Eneloops lying around anyway. It’s so much more sustainable. There are some eco-friendly mouses but they are mostly lower-end devices. Apparently that’s how it is. Industry, do something about this.
The new one is wireless that’s it. It’s mice not “mouses”. There are no new gestures or other features. This new one is only as good as the internal battery life. That’s good for Apple and bad for you and the planet. The old one works forever. If you have the old one, keep it. The new one is actually less planet friendly.

Prefer the 1st one because with the 2nd it will only device with lightning in my house. So i must collect more than single universal type-c cables that fits all my devices, include heaadphones and macbook. It works really well already for 5+ years and feels immortal. And if it will die, broken or i will loose it, i can always take used another one just for under 20 bucks.
