The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is known for its official mascot, Ed-U-Gator, which represents the spirit and pride of the university. The Gator Mark represents the spirit and pride of UHD and may be used primarily by the Office of Admissions. UHD is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Minority-Serving Institution, and Military-Friendly School, indicating a diverse and vibrant student body.
The 45-foot-tall, helium-filled mascot Ed-U-Gator made his debut in the 74th Annual H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade with the help of UHD merit scholars, the UHD drumline, cheerleaders, dance team, and club team. The university and its community offer additional activities, including the mascot Ed-U-Gator, which was nicknamed the “Ed-U-Gator” but is now known as “Allen” when he makes his rounds at student functions.
In 1947, the institution launched one of its many rich traditions by adopting the cougar, later named Shasta, as its official mascot. The university became a military-friendly school, and the mascot has been a symbol of unity and pride.
The Gator Mark, created by artist Sebastien “Mr. D” Boileau in 2015, represents the spirit and pride of UHD and may be used primarily by the Office of Admissions. The University of Houston-Downtown’s mascot, Ed-U-Gator, serves as a reminder to do their part and wash their hands.
