What Kind Of Display Impact Do Spells On Wow Have?

The user is experiencing issues with seeing ground spell areas of effect (AoE) in their game. They are unable to see certain spells, such as “Wild Spirits” and “Consecration”, but can see other spells like a druid’s Efflorescence and a warlock’s personal portal. The user suggests that Blizzard could add an option in graphics to change the color of all “ground effect spells” to red or blue for a more defined appearance.

Projected textures can be enabled, but it is important to ensure that particle density is not too high to achieve a more defined appearance. The “sunshafts” option is responsible for some ground effects, such as the green goo on the second boss in BRH. Setting shadow quality to “Good” or higher may help keep targeted AoE visible.

The “projected textures” enablement is also a problem, as it may not be beneficial for players to see everything on the ground. An addon creates bindings to show the targeting reticle for ground-targeting spells on key down and cast at the cursor when the key is released.

The user also mentions that they have a low-quality PC and sometimes cannot see ground effects, leading to death to certain mechanics. To resolve this issue, they suggest adjusting the Projected Textures and Particle Density settings. Area of Effect (AoE) spells affect multiple targets within a predetermined radius set by the game’s mechanics.

Actioncam Plus is a World of Warcraft camera addon I cannot recommend enough, especially if you play a short race like me.

  • By the way, all the issues the ActionCam can just be disabled in the settings of DynamicCam too. I used DynamicCam for a lower camera position and nothing else for the entirety of BFA. You just gotta remove the auto-camera profiles and set the alignment to the center and then it’s sorted. It gives far more control and settings over Actioncam Plus too. If I ever wanted an over-the-shoulder view I just used MoveAnything to move the proc effects to a better position too. AC+ seems like a far simpler solution for those wanting it though so good to know it exists!

  • Hey, I know this article is kinda old now, but have you ever considered adding some side-by-side comparisons. It actually took almost a full minute before i even knew what this article was addressing. I had to go back and watch the first few seconds multiple times to spot the difference. Once i understood the point of the article and was able to watch it i had to do the same thing multiple times through the article to actually view the before and afters. For what it is worth, good article, just could have been more user friendly 🙂

  • It’s neat for immersion but I think in practice it is a downgrade for combat. Being able to see the ground behind your character can be useful when avoiding mechanics and figuring out where you need to move without flinging your camera around. I also prefer having the camera way further away than this article has it. To each their own though.

  • Yeah, there was add-on for immersive questing back in legion that got sued unfortunately, but the reason why you have so much floor view is so you can see fire under you. I decided to get 2.5k Rio on third character this season when augmentor came out and had to use weak auras to keep better track of cooldowns, and it already made it harder to spot volcanic affix. So camera add-ons are good for questing or casual daily routine, but not for endgame, unless you want to do it in expense of your teamates.

  • I don’t know. I use my camera as a pair of eyes. I use it to look around to spot what I can death grip, spot what is coming like fire AOE, spot what can be stunned, silenced, rooted, polymorphed or healed in a pinch. I do that all with the default camera so camera angle doesn’t matter to me because I change it too much.

  • ty for the tip! Unfortunately I need this ground space for personal tracking auras (I wish I could use the addon all the time), but this really helped me while I’m mounted… Always got bothered with the camera with flying or huge mounts, they took all the screen sometimes, and this worked like a charm

  • Thank you, SO much. I am sick and tired of my dragon’s ass taking up so much of what I see in DF and, as you pointed out, the stock ActionCam is just damn awful. The game camera is pretty much what’s kept me from playing a Dwarf/Gnome/Teacup Race from the start, the camera angles were just bloody awful. 🖤

  • Big Thx from Denmark. Amazing this isnt default setting or at least something the game would ask first time you play a new char. Its night and day, i played wow since 2005, but because of health problems i dont raid or do high keys anymore, i mainly level alts and do solo stuff, so i dont know how this work @ raid and m+, but for how i play, i LOVE it.. Thx again. /salute

  • /console test_cameraDynamicPitch 1 does the trick aswell … also this isnt cs youre not aiming for heads so this has disadvantages rather for seeing less stuff happening behind you but not really an advantage for seeing more stuff in front of you so wouldnt use it tbh and all high rated players i know dont dont seem to do so either…

  • Weirdly I turned this on, went “ok cool” fiddled with the settings a bit and then it just STOPPED WORKING? Like I have it setup just like yours but when i toggle on and off the pitch now it just doesn’t do anything at all. edit: turned all addons off to check for any conflicts, still having this problem. Well this addon was great for about 30 seconds.

  • What you call “floor” i call addon space 🙂 I tired the action cam and different setting but this actually makes the game much harder in hard content. There’s nothing that will kill you in the sky, everything is on the floor and you take most of it out of the picture when you pitch and makes spotting things like spawning afflicted behind you for example. It should definitely NOT be the default camera experience. It’s fine for casual stuff/roleplaying but it makes the game much harder in group content. The game was not designed with it in mind.

  • Can confirm, this Addon indeed changed the way I see WoW forever… Literally and figuratively. However the water collision detection while swimming is kinda problematic, because the camera often slips underwater, even though you’re swimming on the surface. If the creator of the addon could add an option that automatically deactivates the actioncam, whenever it detects swimming on surface, this would be a solid 9 out of 10 addon.

  • this makes me slightly pissed, because i am a destiny 2 player and the idea for bungie to put the actual aim slightly down changes SO MUCH how you see the enemies and the map its insane. i really wished more fps and shooters let you actually put the aim like halo but no one does besides bungie itself. tons of third person games i played have the same problem that you demonstrated there which is just insanely stupid considerind they are all AAA games.

  • Ppl who play like this are the ones that fail the easiest m+ mechanics and blame the healer for not saving them. Or the ones that overextend in pvp and los their healer, cuz of 0 awareness for positions. Fr.: this is maybe a cool feature for the eyes in open world, but has no practicality in any combat environment.

  • Yeah no, do not change this to default whatever you do Blizzard. It feels horrible not being centered to your character + you lose a lot of vision and control of your surroundings. It also forces your eyes to the lower part of the screen when things get near your character, which is really uncomfortable and not ideal at all.

  • Awesome article! I play a Night Elf and I fucking hate this! I can’t even look at Alexstrasza in her dragon form! THE MAIN STORY CHARACTER OF THE EXPANSION AND CAMPAIGN QUEST GIVER…. -can only see her fucking toes!! WTF?! Back in the day we used to be able to zoom out like 5 times more. This was not a problem until Blizzard thought it was too easy to see mechanics in raids by zooming out. Blizzard’s quest to make WoW some hardcore high octane pro gamer elite experience has been making WoW more and more frustrating and down right unpleasant to play for years!

  • I am not sure why some people are misunderstanding so let me be clear: 200 + Ping is a MINIMUM. It means you do NOT go below it EVER NO MATTER WHAT. It does NOT mean you set it to 250. LEAVE IT AT 400 IF ITS 400. THIS IS TARGETTED FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE IT BELOW THE MINIMUM, LETTING THEM KNOW TO INCREASE IT. IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400 IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400 IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400 IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400 IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400 IF YOU HAVE IT AT 400 LEAVE IT AT 400

  • Huh, this is a perspective I never considered. I always naively assumed that I was fast enough with my button mashing that it’d always link up with the next GCD. Just checked my own log when I played arcane last patch and there’s frequent 100-150ms gaps between my spellcasts. Here I thought I was already ‘skill-capped’ settings wise lol – massively useful info man, thanks. Quite ironic how noticeable of a setting this is for the player’s performance, yet it was removed from the base UI settings and requires an addon to even be aware of the feature. Classic Blizzard.

  • yup, 400 for me by default. I always knew all of this, everything that you said, but couldn’t pin point what that is 😀 But yeah, on 400, especially on fire, it sometimes gets clunky and you start casting pyro when you don’t want but that’s why fire mages usually jump when they are casting – so you interrupt your spellcast if it happens by accident (became bigger problem when I started playing with ice floes) 😀

  • @Forgyy When you say “MINIMUM”, does that mean we should make it higher? Like I have 50 ping so based on the article 250 min, should I make it 300 to air on the safe side as not mess up queing? or based on your statement 6 days ago, I should “LEAVE AT 400” ? *grin*, really great article but seriously, I really want to know the answer.

  • Helpful article, you mentioned that any spell cast during the spellque window will clear the previous spellque, does that also happen on fireblast? IE. I am hardcasting pyro, spellque a firebolt and after spellqueing the firebolt i instacast the Fireblast during the spellque window, should the firebolt still go or is it “cleared” by the fireblast

  • Perfect article thank you for this minmax.. I wanna ask if this is implemented on istant cast as is Arcane barrage or explosive .. my problem is when I go into big haste and I am in filler rotation after big burn.. sometimes I que 2t imes arcane barrage instead of arcane explosion.. co I am wasting time with 0 stacked arcane barrage.. is there any chance how to setaup it to not queing second arcane barrage? would help a lot

  • I don’t even play retail nor watch it still got this recommended by youtube. That’s even more interesting than blizzard implementing useful mechanics in their nowadays version. Gonna check whether this is in classic as well as it runs on modern client. My cast bar addon showed me such a delay bar but idk if it was active.

  • I think this is a good article to avoid people from having 400ms or to have less than 100 but for me I’ve always done 100+ my ping and it has always worked wonderfully anything too above on really high haste just doesn’t give me the results I want and from playing arcane/frost and still achieving rank 1s and having no gaps I think it’s better than anything above 250+ but that’s my experience anyways, like from me

  • Keep in mind that proc classes, specifically like enhancement shaman, favors lower sqw because of last minute procs. If u have 250 or 300 and have queued up a lightning bolt but get a last minute storm strike proc(u wanna press ss no matter what) with low sqw u cant switch and press ss, but with higher sqw u cant swap.
