Is DC in Maryland or Virginia?

The District of Columbia (DC) has been separate from Maryland and Virginia for over 200 years, and while they work cooperatively on regional issues, neither state is interested in annexing the DC. DC residents prefer the full autonomy that statehood can provide. Nineteen members of Congress from Maryland and Virginia are sponsoring the Washington Admission Act in the 117th Congress. DC has representation in Congress, but it has no representation in the Senate, meaning residents have no say in federally appointed positions, such as the president’s cabinet or US ambassadors to foreign countries.

Additionally, they have no voice in the confirmation of judges to the federal bench or justices to the US Supreme Court. The Constitution allows for the federal district to be reduced in size and residential and commercial portions of DC to become a state, as long as the boundaries are not exceeding ten miles square.

Why are they called the Washington Mystics?

The Mystics, an expansion team in the WNBA, began play in 1998, aiming to emulate the Washington Wizards. The team’s first season was a league-worst 3–27 record, but the team’s first overall pick in the 1999 draft was Chamique Holdsclaw, who helped improve the team’s record and earn its first playoff berth in 2000. In 2002, the Mystics advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, but were defeated by the New York Liberty. In 2005, the Mystics were sold to an ownership group including Sheila C. Johnson, the first Black woman to own a WNBA team.

In 2006, the team reached the Eastern Conference semifinals but lost to the Connecticut Sun. In 2009, the team returned to the semifinals but was eliminated by the Indiana Fever. The following year, the Mystics improved to 22–12, tying the Liberty for best record in the Eastern Conference. However, they were stopped in the conference semifinals by the Atlanta Dream.

Mike Thibault was hired as head coach in 2013, and the team missed the playoffs only once in 2016. In 2017, the Mystics acquired Elena Delle Donne, the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner, who led them to the WNBA finals in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, the Mystics topped the league with a 26–8 record and captured their first championship. Delle Donne opted to sit out the 2020 season, and the team went 9–13 before a loss in the first round of the playoffs.

  • Brittany Sykes has got to be the most selfish and self centered player of The Washington Mystics. Sykes ( & a few others, to be fair.) cost The Mystics the game and 8th Seed.. Sykes almost got a tech too for throw her “mouth guard ” down on the floor. she was missing shots all night and at times refuses pass the ball to other mystics players who were open. she needs to get it together fast before The Mystics lose their playoff spot. Sykes needs to act like a point guard instead trying to be a shooting guard because it’s not helping The Mystics 😒

  • As disappointing as Dream has been I gotta give Tina Charles her flowers. The most underrated story this year. 💐 I realized that Mystics try and play hero ball at the end which is why they lost so many close games. Can’t play like that in the playoffs (assuming they make it.) or they’ll get tossed in the 1st round. 🤔

  • I got Atlanta as #9 in the league and Washington as #8 . The regular season series is tied 2 – 2 with a point differential of +13 in favor of Washington Toughness ranking; ranks how difficult a team is to the teams they’ve played with 1=toughest 11=easiest Atlanta ranks 8th for Washington (with Phoenix being 7th and Los Angeles being 9th) Washington ranks 6th for Atlanta ((tied with Seattle) with Connecticut being 5th and Chicago being 8th)
