The root chakra, also known as the Muladhara, is the first chakra in the body’s energy system and is located at the base of the spine. It is responsible for our sense of safety, security, and basic needs. The root chakra is activated by practicing the Muladhara Mudra, which involves bringing the palms of one’s hands together at the heart center and interlacing the pinky and ring fingers so they fold inside the palms.
The root chakra is represented by a 4-petalled lotus flower, and the seed mantra (beej mantra) of the Muladhara Chakra is “Lam”. If vibrations are felt in the root chakra, it means it is opening up. To gain chakra control, practice the following techniques during yoga practice, meditation, or pranayama:
- Ring finger – Earth and root chakra
- Pinky fingers – Water and sacral chakra
- Bija mantras – one-syllable seed sounds meant to be said aloud
- Murti Mudra (Gesture of Embodiment) for busy minds
- Gyan/Jnan Mudra (Gesture)
By manipulating our fingers into different positions, we direct our body’s energy channels, known as prana. By practicing these techniques, we can gain chakra control and experience transformation through practices that connect us to the earth and fortify our inner stability.
