The Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting, Indiana, opened its doors on December 26, 2018, after four years of anticipation. The $18 million, 25,000-square-foot, three-story state-of-the-art Mascot Hall of Fame Interactive Children’s Museum at 1851 Front St. opened on December 26 with a focus on honoring sports mascots from college and professional sports. The museum, which opened in response to the first honorees being San Diego’s Famous Chicken, is an educational, STEAM-based, fully interactive museum.
Founded in 2005 by David Raymond, the founder, the Hall of Fame was initially an online-only hall to honor sports mascots across the United States. The new facility opened in April 2019, and each year, mascots are elected into the Hall of Fame by the voting membership. In 2018, the HOF opened a building in Lake County to house the mascot history after making a deal with the City of Whiting.
The Mascot Hall of Fame’s mission is to honor mascots, and the museum will be closing permanently at the end of the summer. The beloved spot in Whiting will close on September 14, according to a post on their Facebook page. The 2023 Mascot Award winners and the 2023 Awards will also be announced.

How long has the Hall of Fame been around?
The Hall of Fame for Great Americans was founded by Henry Mitchell MacCracken, chancellor of New York University, in the 1890s. Helen Miller Gould Shepard, in memory of her father Jay Gould, provided funds for the Gould Memorial Library and dormitory. The Hall of Fame was established in 1900 with her aid, and it does not restrict its posthumous honor to any one class, including persons of achievement in many fields. MacCracken aimed to teach youth that leaders in science and scholarship may be as great as military and naval heroes.
Among the honoured individuals are George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Susan B. Anthony, Jane Addams, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Booker T. Washington. The busts of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant stood side by side in the colonnade until 2017, when the sculptures of Lee and Stonewall Jackson were removed in response to a growing movement to take down Confederate statues.
The Hall serves many who seek to familiarize themselves with the great men and women of the country. To guard against melancholy thought, former director Robert Underwood Johnson placed the words “Enter with joy that those within have lived” and “Take counsel here of beauty, wisdom, power” over the gates at the southern entrance.
