Rite Aid has announced its latest batch of store closures as the pharmacy chain continues through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. Employees at several Toledo Rite Aid locations confirmed that all of the drugstore chain’s Ohio outlets will be closed by the end of next month. As a result, Rite Aid is closing 27 more locations in Ohio and Michigan. In an August 9 filing, the company revealed it would be closing an additional 33 stores.
The Tallmadge Rite Aid has joined the growing list of pharmacies closing throughout Ohio. According to a store associate, the last day for the store will be Aug. 18. The pharmacy will close earlier, with customers’ prescriptions being transferred to Walgreens starting July 9. As of August 9, 2024, the company has published 181 closures in Ohio. The latest list of Rite Aid stores closing includes locations in Westlake, Shaker Heights, Painesville, Tallmadge, and Canton.

What I remember about K-Mart was they has a snack bar at the entrance area and I remember getting these 3 cheap sandwiches that we’re 3 subs in a clear plastic bag. The subs had onions, tomato, cheese, shredded lettuce, pickles, bologna, served in large like hot dog buns split open as the sub bread. And when you were poor and needed a cheap meal those sandwiches hit the spot / 3 for $3
Overall I think Eddie Lampert is the main reason this brand is disappearing between greed and somewhat carelessness with the marketing. While I agree with others that reno and updated tech would help the company a lot, I think it could have pulled through the struggle with the older technology- even Hobby Lobby still uses super retro cash registers and setups despite remodeling and reno. It really does suck to see stores go. Saw my three nearest Kmart stores close in 2016 (Fort Collins), 2017 (Cheyenne) and 2018 (Laramie).
Kmart was everything for me. The Carlsbad, NM Kmart opened in 1977 where the Carlsbad Mall is located which opened in 1981. I remember getting Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose, Sunset Riders, Yoshi’s Cookie and Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge and A Bug’s Life VHS as it became a BIG Kmart in 1998. My mom brought school clothes there as I said “God I don’t want to wear these Icky Kmart clothes!” as I wanted to wear Walmart clothes I know my clothing choices was very bad though but I couldn’t help it my mom love the Jaclyn Smith line and the Bath Towels even the Martha Stewart beddings and cookware too. A damn shame that my Carlsbad, NM Kmart closed in 2002 and it’s now a Ashley Home Store! You didn’t forget to mention that Sega sued Kmart over the whole Dreamcast fiasco as they stopped stocking Dreamcasts and Sega got really really pissed and Kmart filing for bankruptcy in 2002 I felt that the Sears merger was a big mistake as Eddie Lampert is nothing more than an asshole as he wants the assets shutting down stores and wanted that estate money which he’ll likely get. Kmart was a huge part of my childhood. The store had everything! I loved it as a child. They had a snack bar and a pet department. You could even smoke in the snack bar if you wanted to! Honestly I miss my local Kmart they were actually about a dollar or two cheaper then my local Walmart, but I think the reason it closed is bc it didnt have a gas station. Another grocery story in my town was about to go under was an old building like Kmart they tore it down rebuilt it made it look modern and added a gas station and its booming now.
You did very well. I worked there during the Joseph Antonini years where the board and stakeholders felt he was not working fast enough to do a turnaround and welcomed his resignation. Floyd Hall sadly retired. Charles Conaway sort of looted the company as CEO which may of gave Eddie Lampert the green light to continue. He basically got the whole company for around $1 Billion then sold 60 closed stores for close to the same amount. He made Kmart profitable and knew Sears CEO Lacy who had doubts of Sears ability to continue and agreed to sell. Lampert would never listen to any executives ideas for growth and felt stock buy backs were the best investment rather than putting it into the stores. Needless to say its been over 10 years of liquidation. Lampert convinced Judge Robert Drain to accept his bid on the premise that the 425 remaining stores were profitable and he was saving 50k jobs. I’m surprised that Kmart is still around and kicking (barely). I thought they and Sears would be long gone about 5-10 years ago. I always remembered them struggling and when I moved down here to the Lower 48 from Alaska back in 2001, I forgot about Kmart existing for a long time until my grandfather and I went to one in Las Vegas (that went under shortly after leaving Vegas) when I was living there attending college a few years back and I was shocked by how it still looked like it did when I was a kid. I knew Kmart must have been struggling and I was right. I have a feeling that they won’t make it to the holiday season this year or they’ll be lucky to make it into next year.
