Which Mascot Horror Game Is The Worst?

Indie mascot horror games like Garten of Banban and Poppy Playtime have faced criticism for their focus on popularity. Games like Five Nights At Freddy’s and Bendy and the Ink Machine have not been as successful as they once were. The Mascot Horror trope, popularized by indie horror games in the mid-2010s, focuses on mass of enemies rather than masses of enemies. The trend has seen highs and lows, with games like Freddy, Bendy, Baldi, and e. However, focusing on making a good game rather than popularity is essential for every game genre, not just mascot horror.

There are only three mascot horror games: FNAF, Hello Neighbor, and Poppy. FNAF was the first of its kind and was an unexpected runaway success. The worst mascot horror games of 2023 are voted by RYM users, with the Beak being the worst mascot horror game. The Beak discusses the history of the mascot horror genre and how to fix it. The video also discusses the best mascot horror games of the 2020s, as voted by RYM users.

Over the years there have been plenty Mascot Horror video games released into the world. Ever since the release of Five Nights …

What’s the least scariest horror game?

The rise in horror gaming has been attributed to advancements in console hardware and game engines, which have made games more immersive and realistic. Titles like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Outlast 2, and Amnesia have been praised for their meticulous designs, attracting millions of players. However, some players find some recent releases too scary, despite their interest in the genre. Fortunately, many excellent games have horror elements but don’t try to terrify their audience too much.

While what is and isn’t scary is subjective, most people will find these games to provide an intense but never too frightening experience. Horror gaming has turned its reputation around after a period when jump scares were common in mainstream horror games. Players now prioritize setting a vibe and unnerving players over releasing poorly-paced scares with little buildup. The fact that some of the best horror games aren’t outright scary is proof of this.

What is the first scariest game?

The incorporation of horror genre themes into video games began early in the medium, with the earliest rudimentary attempt dating back to 1972 when a Haunted House overlay was included with the first video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey. Taito’s classic arcade game Space Invaders is also considered a precursor to horror video games, as it involved a survival scenario with an alien invasion and menacing sound effects. Text-based adventure games Mystery House and The Lurking Horror also incorporated horror elements through their textual descriptions of rooms.

ASCII Corporation’s Nostromo for the PC-6001, inspired by the science fiction horror film Alien, was a survival horror game that involved escaping from an invisible alien with limited resources. Haunted House for the Atari 2600 was another notable early horror video game.

With more graphical capabilities, games should start to include horror-related imagery, often present in licensed games based on horror films in the 1980s and 1990s, such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and Friday the 13th, as well as games inspired by horror films such as Project Firestart inspired by the Alien films. Due to console and computer limitations, these horror images were often limited to cutscenes rather than animated sprites used in action-based gameplay to give fidelity to the details of the horror scene.

Is Bendy mascot horror?

Mascot horror, a genre that emerged in the early 2000s, has gained immense popularity since the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s in 2014. Despite varying in quality, the genre continues to thrive in the world of horror gaming. Often characterized by episodic releases and sometimes-absurd lore, mascot horror continues to attract impressive fandoms and profits.

The success of the mascot horror genre can be attributed to several factors. The games are often child-friendly due to the mascot characters at their heart, and the lack of human antagonists lowers the amount of gore or violence. This unique aspect of the genre has created a profitable and almost endlessly-exploitable audience of kids looking for a safe but popular way to get into the horror genre. Major horror video game releases, like The Last of Us, fall into the adults-only M-rating, creating a safe and popular way for kids to explore video game horror.

In summary, the mascot horror genre has been a popular and successful sub-genre in the horror gaming world, with its success largely attributed to its child-friendly nature and the absence of human antagonists.

Doki Doki Literature Club! is a 2017 freeware visual novel developed by American independent game studio Team Salvato for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The story follows a student who joins his high school’s literature club, Yuri, or Natsuki, at the insistence of his friend Sayori. The game features a non-traditional plot structure with multiple endings and unlockable cutscenes with each main character.

Despite appearing like a light-hearted dating simulator, it is actually a metafictional psychological horror game that breaks the fourth wall. The game was developed over two years by Dan Salvato, known for his modding work as part of Project M. The game was initially distributed through itch. io and later available on Steam.

An expanded version, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, was released for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on June 30, 2021, and a macOS version on August 12, 2021. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for its side stories and gameplay on consoles, but some criticism for its lack of changes. Plus! is a premium game compared to the original 2017 release.

What is the 1 scariest game on Roblox?

Roblox allows children to create and post horror games, including It Lurks by terriblebox, Roses by Clockwork Entertainment, Lloyd Residence by ChuckLloyd, Light Bulb: Reillumination by PuffothePufferfish, SCP-3008 by uglyburger0, The True Backrooms by KordK, Identity Fraud (Revamp) by Team MOTHERBOARD, Hello Neighbor by MaskedBrick games, All Insanity: The Asylum by Rocket Dreams, and School History by TubPong. These games are in line with Roblox’s TOS and are Roblox-approved.

However, Roblox is not lax in allowing non-horror games that violate their TOS. Non-horror games may be banned if they contain adult themes, swearing, strong language, or graphical blood/gore. Roblox is aware of its young audience, so the likelihood of allowing games that are “too scary” and “too graphic” for children is minimal.

It Lurks is a single-player horror game with monsters, spooky sounds, and jump scares. The premise is that the player wakes up in a dark room, only to find themselves alone in the basement. The spooky elements begin once the player goes to bed, and the game continues until the player is able to escape.

  • I mean they censored Vanny’s KNIFE. Or her jumpscare. Now she just “dances” with you for all eternity. And that’s supposed to be scary. The purpose of her design is to make an antithesis of “friendly looking character doing creepy stuff” but you barely see her because for some GOD UNKNOWN REASON she gives you THE TRIPS if you’re 6 meters close.

  • I’m glad to see someone actually say something good about fnaf 3. Fnaf 3 is also my favorite game in the series and I believe that it is criminally underrated. A lot of people say that it’s one of the worst games in the series and I just don’t understand where their coming from. Sure spring traps jumpscare isn’t the best but the atmosphere, gameplay, and character design more then make up for it.

  • If you want the opinion of someone who did play the Bendy games, you should and they’re great. I might call them, along with the first four FNAF (or three considering how anxiogenic the fourth one), a good starting point if you are interested in horror games. Classic FNAF and the Bendy games are part of the starter pack for horror game players. But, the biggest complaint I have for the Bendy games are the performance, why they are so keen on resources. Even if I have a good enough computer (the strongest on my market in Christmas 2019), I had trouble running them, something I don’t have with other games like Minecraft with shaders. So, if all you have is a laptop, classic FNAF should be your pick. But, if your computer is strong enough, then the Bendy games should be your pick.

  • Poppy Playtime is a good game. I know lots of people here arent gonna agree with me. The reason the characters aren’t that scary, is because it was meant to be a toy factory for kids to visit. So, the characters are all colourful and so is the place. But of course, it got shut down after the characters took over years ago. I get it, its a weird story. But trust me, chapter 3 is gonna be much much scarier.

  • My tier list of these games Rainbow Friends – The absolute worse – It’s a goofy ahh Roblox game for kids, while Roblox can be an insanely good platform to make friends or learn to code, this game throws everything away, The Intruder, DOORS, It Lurks we’re all so scary yet this game is basically a Poppy Playtime ripoff for kids. Ultimate Custom Night – Is this mascot horror? – I love Ultimate Custom Night, but I’m mad that this is apparently considered mascot horror, It’s More of a strategy game, the jumpscares are not scary and don’t even seem to try to BE SCARY, but if this is trying to be scary, it sucks, which I don’t think it is. Hello Neighbor – It was good but it changed for worse – DAGAMES’s Hello Neighbor song “GET OUT” is better then the final game! It turned out to be horrible and overdone with books and everything, but it used to be something good originally, it’s just sad how it turned out. Poppy Playtime – Will be nostalgic in a few years – EnchantedMOB and ZAMination have evolved from previous controversies, seriously, Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 actually scared me, I suck at games like these so Bunzo caught me off guard, and the Whack-A-Wuggy felt very stressful for me, while you could absolutely break the game, it is a terrifying game for me, and Chapter 1 is a good test demo. Security Breach – Not scary, but good – It’s an amazing game! Sure it gets repetitive but all and all I think it did what it wanted to, sure it’s absolutely broken and lacks the things fans wanted but to me, it’s good in it’s own way, there is a problem, it is NOT scary at all, most of Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex is very bright and cheerful, and most of the jumpscares look very goofy, but all and all, the daycare and the glamrock Endo part did destroy me since I was pretty scared, but so far, the game was good.

  • im currently 13 so I think its kinda cool how Ive liked fnaf since the very beginning but I stopped being interested when sister location came out which when I look back at it i really regret that because obviously because I was pretty young I loved the lore the most and I think sl doesn’t ruin what was already there but instead expanded the world of fnaf edit: yes that means I missed pizzeria simulator and its jimmy neutron memes ):

  • Man i really hope one day you try BATIM and BATDR, they are good, specialy the last one ! It also could make you hate more Poopy Pootime lookin how they literaly ripedoff it. Also, dont look up the devs and there history. Its a hell hole. Worst devs. Also maybe you can try Tattletail 🙂 its a mascot horror from 2016.

  • I honestly really like this tier list a lot! I think you’ll really enjoy BATDR. I would put it in S tier. I’m glad there is also somebody else who thinks fnaf 3 is pretty cool! I have to agree with the poppy playtime one a lot lol. Character designs really aren’t scary and how the puzzles aren’t fun to solve and are boring. I still think they could at least do something in chapter 3. My favorite one of them all is FNAF: Help Wanted. Hope you have an amazing day!

  • 17:29 I have multiple favourites, but I’ll note the ones I love, Cuphead, Undertale, Sonic Mania, FNaF, Choo Choo Charles And Bendy, But On The Other Hand, Games I Despise, Garten Of BanBan, Garten Of BanBan 2, Garten of BanBan 3, Garten of BanBan 4 & Rainbow Friends. You can tell I like indie games.

  • Poppy playtime is not bad, I hate how people are shitting in this hard worked on game. Sure they did take some inspiration from bendy and the ink machine but you know. Poppy playtime is very interesting and makes a balanced out indie game. Amazing lore, super graphics, amazing character personality, and people are making poppy playtime like it’s not scary sure I guess you wanna a big boy and be brave. Poppy playtime always keeps you on your toes, feeds you pretty decent lore and feels like an indie horror game. It does have enough potential to be at least scary. And not to mention this is only the first two chapters, they are basically previews of something scarier hiding within so don’t be quick to judge.

  • to save some time I’ll write down the 100% objective fnaf game tier list S: fnaf1, fnaf2, fnaf4, fnaf world, ucn A:fnaf 6, help wanted B:fnaf sb ruin C:fnaf sb D:fnaf ar, fury’s rage, freddy in space 2 E:fnaf sl F:fnaf 3 the reason why sl is above 3 is because at least fnaf sl was fun for the first 2 playthroughs, fnaf 3 has just as good of a story but there’s no gameplay other than just pressing 2 buttons on cameras until a timer runs out

  • My favorite game is Sky : Children of the light ! So it’s basically a multiplayer game about friendship and it works like the cycle of life in a way (kinda hard to explain), you have to go on a journey alone or with people you meet along the path to reach your goal: accomplish the mission you were given since your arrival in the kingdom of Sky. But there’s more: when you finally get to the end of the game, there’s still a LOT to discover, to do and more to come ! I know it’s not everyone’s favorite kind of game but it’s free therapy, plus the community is adorable and probably one of the most wholesome out there…so you should probably give it a try🕯️ Sorry for my English, still learning it 👀 (some feedback would mean a lot to me if you spot any mistake!)

  • Honestly I really love poppy playtime. The graphics are high quality the voice acting is top notch especially for Mommy Long Legs in chapter 2, the story is interesting enough the gameplay is for the most part unique and the puzzles are difficult and fun. I can understand saying it isn’t scary, but I can say for the majority of people who played had a few scares throughout chapter 1 & 2. Though I agree those god awful Lankybox articles can burn in hell

  • Uh, hello. Xbox 360, Battleblock Theater Theme!? Literally after the queue of the BATIM and BATDR images, right in the background, (faintly sound) during his monologue. Just, quick tidbits of audio here and there and it’s a game from the independent game studio known as The Behemoth, who also made Alien Hominid (originally made Flash) and also made in with a better animated premiere HD Xbox 360 game. Anyways, answering other questions, Indeed, Undertale soundtrack is used, “hotel” track is used when he’s discussing his thoughts about FNAF 2, and “Death By Glamour” very start of the article. Waluigi’s Pinball is also in a segment of the article, Poppy Playtime CH2, respectively. Coming from Mario Kart Wii And then also the Crash Bandicoot Main Theme, with it in the background during discussion of Poppy Playtime CH1, and also the referenced Waluigi’s Pinball track that plays during Poppy Playtime Chapter 2, as well. And, the only ones that have already been mentioned, is in that comment. If, you got help then let me know down in the replies, please definitely let me know!

  • I heard that Poppy playtime was actually made to attack someone making a similar game because they didn’t sign a contract to assist making cringey Minecraft articles after seeing that the contract said that they couldn’t post in their own YouTube website and they’re just made a handful good Minecraft animations for fun

  • I never got into Fnaf until 2018, but it must have been nice back in the earl6 days when the Fnaf community wasn’t toxic and Fnaf was still considered a scary game, I was only 2 when Fnaf 1 got released so I don’t blame myself for not joining back in the early days, my brother tho was a 2000s kid but was always bust with Minecraft and not much of a horror fan.

  • The Henry Stickmin Collection is the best game ever made and if you don’t agree you’re wrong. tbh I really liked FNaF 4 and their nightmare forms. They’re very interesting designs, and it was a tentatively different take on the series/formula of the series before it was changed entirely. I can’t say I enjoyed the Halloween DLC, but FNaF 4 was the scariest, in my opinion. FNaF 3 has some of my favorite lore and Springtrap was an amazing character. It’s a shame he was never utilized properly after that. And I will never get over the atrocity that is FNaF: SB. I liked the concept/character of the Daycare Attendant and the potential of the mall. I think what would have done the game WAY better was if it was set multiple years AFTER Freddy collapsed on stage and the mall closed due to children’s deaths, and replace Burntrap with Vanny as the main villain.

  • While I do agree with you on fnaf help wanted, I do think the games should have ended at pizzeria simulator. That game had the perfect way to end the series and lay it to rest, but like a modern day Simpsons or Spongebob. It may be just as popular, but the games and media are getting worse and worse as time goes on.

  • I like hello neighbor more as a sandbox game. And I like the overall story going on behind the scenes. But I can tell why most people hate it. It is always so broken and the developers keep making stupid choices. The most solid stuff about hello neighbor has to be content outside of the games like the books or the animated series. I feel like the developers always have good ideas but execute them poorly. I almost feel like they became too popular before they had enough competent skills. Like popularity grew faster than their actual skills as small indie devs into this big franchise.

  • 1. There’s a lot of good Roblox mascot horror games out there 2. Maybe we should look at Poppy Playtime for what it is rather than looking at it as a copy of BaTIM or something made to sell toys (which are both true) 3. Hello Neighbor 2 is honestly a big improvement from the first game 4. The entire article was The Beak hogriding the FNaF franchise/j

  • Also the creators of poppy playtime made a person go into a FUCKING PSYCHOLOGICAL HOSPITAL by bullying uim and threatening him and whatnot. And they did that just cause he didnt agree to make animations with them on a connected website which he wouldnt get all of the money from and woukd have to give up on his website.

  • while Bendy and the ink machine is meh, due to being the creator’s first game (still better then most of these games) Bendy And The Dark Revival is a really good game and is worth the money, its free roam (if you save right before the final boss trigger) and the lore basically inspired Poppy Playtime (not you Garten of banban)

  • you know what could a interesting idea? Is kind of a reversed mascot horror. You instead play as an adorable marketable character (which for some reason i imagine him as a fluffy kobold) that was meant to entertain children, then you accidently find youself on the place that created you and discovered that while you where made to spread happiness and joy the place where you came from is a nightmarish hellscape with violence, mutants, slavery, flesh montrosities and even more dark stuff.

  • It’s genuinely pretty sad to see such a premise being treated so badly. Like, everything else aside, the concept of needing to survive a series of monsters who all wear the same-looking skin while you need to decipher which monster is within that skin to figure out how to stop it is pretty cool. I can imagine a multiplayer game where it’s like phasmophobia in that you and others are tasked with identifying the main monster through preestablished clues and finding a way to either escape or contain it before it can kill all of you. I think the best way to have presented this concept is to introduce Sparky as a containment unit that looks the way it does because it’s aesthetically easier to comprehend and work with instead of just a normal mannequin where all the monsters’ behaviors or traits would have been extremely uncanny. They could have even taken this a step further by making a mechanic where when the monster kills someone, it can remove itself from Sparky and place itself into the corpse, leaving behind a husk of Sparky for other players to find and realize how screwed they are while all the habits that made Sparky look goofy look genuinely terrifying when translated into its new human body. This serves as both a creepy but realistic way to justify Sparky’s existence while also making players genuinely feel closer to Sparky as seeing Sparky’s empty husk means that things just went from bad to worse in-game and making him a sorta canary where his death means the worst has happened.

  • This whole thing stunk the moment I saw it. Sloppy an uninspired level design, extremely NFT-esc characters, discord integration, and of course; Multi-chapter releases. Seriously people, stop making NEW games for each chapter. Just have it all in one engine so you can fix all your garbage at the same time.

  • Personally, I’m skeptical about Zoochosis. All I’ve seen were prerendered trailers, security footage-style gifs, some cutscenes, and little to no actual gameplay outside of walking around and getting jumpscared. After doing light googling, I can only assume that it’s going to be a FNAF-like task management game that relies on their freaky monster designs. And while the giraffe looks amazing, the kangaroo is just silly. If there’s anything out there that actually shows some convincing, real gameplay, I’d love to see it. I sincerely hope the devs are actually making a good game, I just seriously side-eye these kinds of project that seems so reluctant to show what their game actually is.

  • I know that you didn’t wanted to talk about Sparky in the comments, but I need to say this. I did some digging about the devs working on Clapperheads, and I found out that some of them worked on the Hello Neighbor IP, and almost all of their games have game design problems similar to Spark Marky. Which is, like, almost some sorts of Pharaoh’s level of game curse.

  • Honestly, as a soon to be mascot horror dev, one of my biggest fears is my game being the subject of one of these articles. Which is part of the reason i watch these types of articles. Apart from the fact that i genuinely enjoy this content, it also gives me insight into what not to do as a developer, and has been a big inspiration for my development career (as fledgling as it may be).

  • I remember playing the demo for this thing from Itchio and getting turned off by just how boring the game was and how hard they were pushing their discord for the “code words” sprinkled throughout the game that I did not in fact find and maybe something about lore? Idk, my memories are hazy since it was a couple years back and after getting stuck I dropped it and deleted the files off my pc. Glad to see they’re still pushing to artificially inflate their discord

  • having to track an invisible enemy and force it off of you by tagging a dummy reminds me heavily of a Saturn-exclusive game called Enemy Zero, which involves you navigating a spaceship while getting stalked by invisible enemies that you can only track by sound (piano keys to be exact) and have to utilize a catch-all tool with limited battery power to fend them off…which honestly makes me wish we got a more modernized take on that instead, but oh well!

  • my cat likes to twitch-kick his hind leg like he’s a horse. He does this primarily when there’s a breeze or draft that touches his bum. He also goes ‘borl’ instead of ‘meow’, we named him Conan because of his joyless expression and wild hair. He took to my dad the way dads take to dogs, the two have a similar expression when perusal football. Pure. Stoic. Focus.

  • My cat is Archibald. He was apparently living as a stray outside an apartment building and being fed by a few residents before someone realized it was eventually going to get cold and brought him to the shelter where I found him. I have suspicions that he might’ve been abused at some point in his past, just based on some of his behavior, but in the ten months I’ve had him he’s gotten more confident and it’s obvious that he feels safe and secure in my home. ❤

  • I like the idea of having to go “outside” the game to solve puzzles, but instead of discord they could have made it a welcome to the game kind of situation, where the game itself contains the plot and also a virtual desktop or something like that that you have to transverse to continue, that way you don’t have to exit out every few minutes and break immersion

  • On the cat topic, I had a cat named Taffy once. They were a pain in the ass. Always bit me for no reason and they always immediately came for me whenever I walked out of my room alone. Eventually made me afraid to even come out until other people were out of their rooms too. We do not have that one now, thankfully. We eventually got two more cats soon after Taffy was given away. One was a black cat named Mavin that had to be put down due to a urinary tract infection and the other one was a breed of cat that I can’t remember off the top of my end but I want to say it was a calico or something. Her name is Willow. She’s still alive and well, She’s annoying too. Mavin was honestly the better one. He may have jumped up on stuff a lot, but he was nice and liked being pet. May he rest in peace. Speaking of him, he was buried in my uncles property for some reason, if I’m not mistaken.

  • Got an orange tabby named Lucky i picked up as a kitten from a farm and he has ALL the traits of a orange cat that doesnt have a hold of the universal brain cell xD My 2nd cat i got from my moving neighbour, Lilly, i think shes a mix cause she looks like a tabby but her fur is really fluffy. Shes the sweetest thing around ❤

  • I had three cats I took care of after my grandpa passed. My favorite was a big fluffy one named Euna. One time it was storming and I didn’t want him to be cold, so I sat on my porch hoping he’d join me. He did eventually, and even let me pet him (he was feral, and pets were a rare treat). To my suprise though, he actually climbed into my lap, and fell asleep following some TLC as he laid there. I haven’t seen him since my dad kicked me out, and I hope they’re ok.

  • I heard a lot of good ideas from this article, and I saw a lot of lost potential. First of all, I love the idea of multiple monsters using the same suit, but in execution… Why? Why that suit in particular, why does the suit even look like that. It looks so jarring compared to the rest of the game. The sci-fi SCP style labs don’t fit with the bright pink peanut look of the mascot, and again, WHY are they using that suit? It would be cool if these were some unimaginable horror that could only be contained in these specialized suits, acting as a sort of straight jacket to keep them from harming themselves or others. I’m picturing some old tattered rags clinging onto this amorphous shape that could be any monster. Picture this. The facility has several monsters locked away, sealed inside three suits that all look exactly identical. One day, one of these monsters manages to break free of their restraints, and kills the other creatures. Now, you need to find out which one survived because tactics that could stop some monsters may only embolden whatever is chasing you. The suit isn’t some happy mascot, it’s a mess of mangled metal and cloth, a bulky metal mask hiding the monster’s true face. But in that large hunk of metal, you see eyes and a mouth, an unintentional design that our brain recognizes thanks to paradollia. Buried under the sparking wires of the mask, you can almost make out a large toothy grin.

  • None of it makes sense. Like, 16 (barely an exaggeration) single use gimmick guns that aren’t used at all and are difficult to remember and acquire if you ever do need one, why would a training facility or real facility require a crypto currency (that somehow is found irl) to unlock hacking (why is hacking encouraged? Just open the door!) or something as simple as using an elevator?? You telling me a wheelchair user can get trapped in the upper/lower floors if they don’t own enough credits?? The hell? The rooms don’t look sciency, no science happens there at all and I don’t understand why these monsters get in these suits in the first place Use the tokens for extra ammo or instant refresh cool-downs, and have it mapped to a key instead of a cumbersome in-game menu screen that makes you stop moving. Markiplier played the second one and both he and I got so confused that I didn’t finish perusal it. Idk if he even finished playing it. It was as terrible to watch as it is to play

  • sparky Marky actually has kind of an interesting concept if it did it properly and if it added actual ARG elements that were completely optional and didn’t try and force you to join their discord just to finish the game and if the game actually made Sparky Marky a threat then this could have been great I hope other mascot horror games try something similar but do it right instead of this half cooked way

  • If you take suggestions, a series on youtube that is criminally underrated and unknown that is technically mascot horror is the series ‘Welcome to Dreamworld’ by Rainbott It is an amazingly well made FNAF-inspired analog horror/tragedy with great designs, amazing lore, stellar voice acting, and engaging characters, with the twist to most games and series in the genre being that the ‘mascot’ characters aren’t the villains, but victims of the villain that are actively helping the protagonist to fix things, and they aren’t all children, but a combination of children, teens, and adults, including one who was actually a founder of the facility where everything goes down, I can’t do the series justice in a single comment, but I suggest you check it out and if it fits what you’re trying to do with the website give it a review so that more people can discover it!

  • never had acat but in my previous neighborhood around before i was in the 3rd grade there was this orange stray that used to roam the neighborhood, it was actually pretty healthy as far as strays go(its pretty commoon around here) one day I just left a bowl of milk out for it(cant remember if it was a he or a she) and it drank it, did it again the next time it came over and again until it became a habit of little me and to the point where the cat would just lie down and stay in the front yard area fro a while after having its milk break and would allow younger me to pet it eventually we moved out of that neighborhood and i never saw it again

  • i was casually given steam keys to this game like a year ago or so before dawko or anyone played it and i will never live down that i just casually had dev keys to both sparky marky and its multiplayer experience game It now just sits in my library rotting because I rather play 9 hours of Buckshot Roulette instead

  • I wonder how this could work if Sparky Marky was a good game. I could vibe with the design, because the Eye design looked pretty cool, but the rest of the design is so bland yet jarringly colorful- and there could be so much more done. ALSO CHANGE THE NAME. For the whole, “you need discord to play!” Id instead have a Oneshot/DDLC or Simulacra type thing where you have to look at files or there’s a In Game app that you have to look through to help solve puzzles. I’d also definitely change the name, and maybe even the idea of it being generic “Childrens Mascot.” I want something new, like a Technology Company’s Mascot, seeing as how there’s a very Digital theme.

  • i remember madkiplier playing this game a while back when i was still OBSESSED with him. if i’m not mistaken i think he may have streamed it? maybe i’m thinking of something else. anyway, i’ve watched so many repeat hours of markiplier content since i was a kid that i can really tell when he’s not enjoying something but is desperately trying to act like he is, which, for someone who literally tplays all these subpar amateur games for a living, is surprisingly rare, so he’s not very good at it. but that article was absolutely HILARIOUS. he was so obviously confused and it was SO funny mostly to watch him try to cover for the game’s awful nonsense where he could with his unrelenting optimism. he tired so hard, man.

  • Fantastic article about a game I’d never be normally aware of. Love the new Emotes/ Sona PNGs. Love Tim’s PaRappa ‘Fit. (Cat Talk) I’ve got one cat whose name is simply “Kitty”, she was a stray who we picked up one day, and she’s been chilling with us for 14-ish years. She’s pretty chill unless she wants food/attention, in which case she’ll sit on our laps and digs her claws into our thighs. Shockingly good with strangers.

  • I have a spoiled fat black cat named Ash. He was my late uncle’s and I sort of inherited him when he passed because I’d had 2 pet cats before. He’s the first one I’ve had that’s lived more than 4 years (my previous 2 had weird health complications), and I adore him. I got him a water fountain recently and it’s been a life changer.

  • 16:30 Little John saved for 10 years to buy a 0.01 inch apartment in New York. He had to weld himself to the door to Nat fall. He got tired of this and wanted to expand. For this he used galvanised square steel, using screws he borrowed from his aunt; utilising eco friendly wood veneers that can last up to 10,000 years

  • glamrock dusty looks like a sonic fandom oc, and i vibe with that! i’ve always loved fnaf to absolute DEATH, perusal it from the point where it JUST started, and i even got my dad to play the second one!!! i’ve also been wanting to get more into sonic stuff but im scared lol PS: you look awesome, so im subbing

  • I like the idea of monstrous entities being sealed inside of some containment suit that they can control to an extent, but Sparky’s execution of it definitely leaves something to be desired. Just look at Puppet and Lefty from FNaF, the idea is out there. And I don’t have a cat, just a dog, currently up to a bulldog.

  • My cat is named Sullivan and is the laziest floof and tends to loaf around and he will literally lay on anyone who lays down near him he is named after James P Sullivan from monsters inc unlike most cats he hardly attacks unless he is hyper he won’t even if provoked most of the time and just loves attention

  • This game reminds me of how the DCEU felt like the creators were skipping major bits of what made the genre work to play catch-up to the bigger players? Like, this game feels like it wanted to get to the “FNaF: Security Breach” and “Project: Playtime” points of the mascot horror genre, without even having a starting game to base itself off of.

  • I’ve had a few cats over the years but the ones I have currently are Lucy & Wester. Lucy was the kitten of a stray cat that showed up at my dad’s place while pregnant then eventually disappeared after Lucy & her brother were old enough for solids along with grabbing our hearts. Luke died cause someone hit him & Lucy eventually moved to my place cause they couldn’t give her the attention she needed at some point after getting a dog. Lucy’s talkative & is a black/white fluffy cat, she doesn’t like other cats but tolerates them occasionally. Wester was a stray that got taken in during a walk down the road near my house, he’s an orange tabby(fur is fairly pale) who is both affectionate & that saying about orange cats having one brain cell. His name came from the fact someone wanted to name him something I forgot(likely “Winston”) & for some reason I wanted to name him after the cat from Pet Cemetery(I know he was named after Winston Churchill but I could have sworn the name was different or the other name was different), I tried to say the original chosen name but mixed it up so he’s Winston now.

  • Finding out that this was being made by the same devs working on Zoochosis, a horror game that I’m actually looking forward to, was probably the biggest plot twist of the entire Sparky Marky franchise. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like the use of AI voices isn’t present in Zoochosis as far as the promotional material is concerned, so at least they fixed that problem.

  • My cat is a sweet boy named Apollo, who just had his 9th birthday recently! He’s a kitten at heart, always wanting to be held and pawing at our arms if we don’t pay attention to him the absolute MOMENT he demands it. He purrs sooooo loud when you hold him, and yet he always looks so irritated even when he’s as happy as can be. He also likes forehead kisses. .w.

  • Awesome recommendation from my for you page! I remember seeing Markiplier playing the second game (likely out of obligation since his name is Mark) and him vaguely enjoying it but feeling it was pretty bare bones. Nice to get a deep dive on it from a new creator! Also, love the concept and model for your website!

  • If I recall the taser guns were a pretty important part of the Do you see Sparky game as they helped take Sparky out so.. lots of the stuff in the other games are underused because of this. I fully believe they intended for that game to be their main focus over the episodic games (which might’ve been meant to be more on the side compared to the DBD clone.)

  • I think the idea of integrating a discord or some other app is a unique take on how mascot horrors have some stupid gimmick (grab pack, the drone, etc). But I feel like there should be more to it than “find a command on the wall and do it on discord”. It also really needs to be done right because it only feels like a hash in to promote their server than an actual unique gimmick.

  • I have an old man cat named Pirate who was sort of perusal the article with me (he was asleep on my lap) who is very cuddly. Then we have the other cat, Shadow, who we call a hellspawn because she’s so weird. She’s loud too, yowling around the house, and is a small black cat. We found her in the trash

  • Funny thing about the discord issue is that there is a right way of incorperating social media into a game. I can’t say for sure, as I’m yet to play it. But I heard it from someone on Discord. In a fan game called Pokemon Xenoverse, there’s a gym which requires you to use the leader’s instagram page to get through it. There is an actual instagram page for it that you can use. But they made sure to make it also available in game! So even if/when instagram shuts down or the page gets taken down, at least you can still complete the gym without looking it up

  • I enjoyed the article! And now for some cat talk. I got 2 cat’s but also 1 honorary member that is my neighbor’s cat technically. The 2 are brothers, one black and one orange. Sadly recently the orange one passed. Both of them were just lazy little guys that. The neighbor’s cat chills with us in our house a lot and she is white with blue eyes and such a cutie even if she loves to annoy us by being unsure if she ever wants to come in or sit at our door and constantly want to go in and out

  • I currently have a tuxedo cat my sister named Sohcahtoa after a math concept. She was relatively chill for a couple years until she suddenly started acting temperamental and sometimes aggressive out of nowhere and now I’m one of the few humans in the household she seems to really like. I seem to have that effect on cats. Maybe my introverted behavior makes them see me as another cat. She mostly hangs out upstairs to avoid the dogs and seems to appreciate that I’m usually nearby since my room is also up there.

  • I HAVE A STORY ABOUT SPARKY MARKY, The devs reached out to me on twitter after I did some Banban art that the Euphoric Brothers retweeted before they left twitter, and asked me to do art for them for “exposure” for them to use for marketing, I never did it but in exchange I also got a few steam keys for the online multiplayer Sparky Marky game. So shoutout to that

  • I don’t have any cats at the moment but I do have a leopard gecko name Little Man. He’s likes to climb a lot even though he’s not one of the species of geckos that can stick to surfaces and any time I go to go to hold him when he’s not in the mood he makes a sad deflated chirping noise at me (lizards aren’t the most interesting pets but they do still have quirky personalities).

  • My cats are Sheba (Siamese), Mai Tai (Balinese) and Sweet Pea (medium hair tuxie). Sweet Pea was a rescue from our local SPCA and the Kittens as we call Sheba and Mai, I admit were from a breeder because it’s very hard to find rescue Siamese, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. And yes Mai Tai is named for the drink. Yours look like beautiful fluffers.

  • There is a game that does horror, stress, gimmicks, and a need for observation quite well. It is Lobotomy Corporation, a roguelike game where you manage a SCP-esque facility full of monsters. Each monster has certain rules attached – for example, Shy hides behind a board with multiple faces. By having an employee enter at a certain time, you can different levels of hurt and energy from the work. Due to the roguelike nature of the game, your facility can be manageable or utterly disastrous depending on what critters you get. The baby, for example, has a roulette wheel where you must feed it employees. Failure to do so will result in everything going terribly wrong. Each thing you add to your facility must be studied, else you won’t be able to handle the dangers to come. It is a metal game, which I very much recommend. Be warned, however, that it is difficult and lengthy, to the point of feeling quite grindy. That actually fits the narrative, but still…yeah, probably the weakest point of the game is the time required. To sum up: unlike Sparky, LobCorp embraces and fully uses the ideas it presents to the player.

  • I (kinda) have two cats rn Skitty (shes been missing for almost 3 weeks though due to a guy who refused to keep his untrained dog leashed by a kids playground)who I’ve had for almost 8 years, she’s a bit dumb but has big brain moments occasionally. Loves broccoli and ketchup And my new kitten; Espurr, got her yesterday so I wouldn’t feel so alone. So far she’s very clingy, a heavy sleeper and very affectionate. She’s only about 12 weeks as per pet adoption laws but she instantly got comfortable in my apartment despite the place heavily smelling of another cat (skitty) Anyway yes both are named after pokemon.

  • I remember seeing some of Sparky, and for some reason I had been misremembering it as a really out of place section of BanBan. That’s how forgettable the game was, it had gotten filed as something else XD ANYWHOOZIT, kitties! I have two, Mistress Nyx and Sir Asterius. They are respectively 5 and 3 years old, Asterius turning 4 in August. Both were shelter adoptions, and FIV+, requiring them to be indoor only cats. Our home already had a lot of cat accomodations because our last kitty lived to the age of 19 before passing, so we asked the shelter “Who has the least chance of getting adopted? Who has been here the longest?” And that’s how we found our current kitties– both adopted when they were around 2 years old, about a year apart. Miss Nyx Chose Me at the shelter when I offered my hand and she turned her body sideways to lean her entire weight into my palm for neck scritches. Asterius chose my hubby when he offered a finger to sniff and Asterius shoved his head against the rest of his hand to demand pets Right Meow. She’d been there 20 days, he’d been there 88 days. Both have seemed quite pleased with their new lives, tho they do squabble with eachother time to time. I’m working hard to keep them happy and healthy, and work closely with my vet to make further improvements to their enviroment, and check new ideas I get to that end to ensure they would be Effective and Feasible.

  • My cat is named Monkey D Luffy. He is 4 years old. He loves to get into trouble. He loves to get into small spaces. He dropped a pop figure on my head once. He got stuck in my bathroom sink cabinet once. He has no legs. He doesn’t make noise. He sticks his tongue out a lot. He only goes to the bathroom once every one to two weeks. He only eats raw rat meat. He is only allowed to eat every two weeks. He is the king of the pirates. His most powerful attack is gomu gomu no ble le le. He loves meat. He brings JOY. He is a good BOY. When people ask me what he is I tell him them “that’s not a snake that’s the sun god Nika” Also apparently he’s supposed to sit in a ball but he never does. He also never looks where he’s going. He also denies gravity applies to him.

  • This was a really great article! Can’t believe I just found your website today. If you see this, I have a quick question (if you don’t mind me asking) – Who did your character branding for your avatar art in the article? I really like the style of it, and was wondering if the artist is available to commission. If you don’t see this, that’s okay, but I hope you know you’re doing a great job and look forward to seeing more from you. 🙂

  • Hey, after perusal the article for a bit, I remember this game now! Y’know, I originally thought this was actually a small ARG demo thingy, not an actual game. And, well, it was a small thingy… the first chapter, at least. I didn’t even know it had a second one. Or a multiplayer game. Go figure :/ Ooooh, they’re the guys working on Zoochosis… Didn’t know that!

  • Well, since you asked… I have three cats. The first was born under the bedroom window of someone my dad worked with, and all the kittens were distributed amongst the staff. He’s a bit neurotic and a total scardy cat– he will hide under a bed at the sound of the doorbell, a knock, the vacuum, the presence of strangers… He’s a gray, bengal patterned boy named Elliot. The second we got from a shelter after we moved. When we first got Elliot, we had another cat who had sadly passed a few years prior. The combination sent Elliot into some major anxiety, and he was licking himself raw. We figured he needed another cat to lick. They usually get along, but she can be a bit of a butt, which often results in him playing a bit too rough and pulling out her fur/hirting her a little (nothing serious, though). She is a goofball and a spaz, and her absolute favorite things in the world are food and laser pointers. I can get her to spin in circles chasing a “fairy.” She’s a tuxedo cat, the only member of our household with short little legs, but a long body, named Zelda. Our third and final cat used to be one of our neighbor’s barn cats, but is now living a very happy retirement with us. He does not have even the slightest trace of your typical barn cat personality. My parents did some investigating and think he might be a Nebelung– a rare off-shoot of the Russian blue that is basically the perfect lap cat. Out of them all, he is the one who has the most fun playing, even though it took him a little bit to figure out how.

  • I think a Youtuber I watch played this game a while back, and I completely forgot about it until this article, and I can see why lmao. It’s actually impressive how many things are wrong with this game Also your character is cute. Glamrock animatronic mixed with a Sonic design is pretty cute, and so are your cats uwu

  • I remember SuperHorrorBros playing both available chapters back when the Discord links were still active. I dunno if chapter 2 was edited later on or if it had alternate endings cause instead of escaping into the woods Mike managed to get an ending were the doctor stayed in the facility & Susie trapped her cause the doctor said something that made it seem like Susie thinks the doctor will betray the facility or something.(Forgot fully what it was cause it’s been a while & I don’t feel like checking again) I apparently didn’t notice the AI voices cause I thought Susie was meant to be an AI character, the doctor was an annoyed facility worker that seems to be use to weird shit(or inexperienced voice actress or someone that had no idea what was meant to happen) while the other guy was over acting. I probably should have realized something was off especially since there was a article I watched about a stupid nft scam “game” that needed a shit ton of people for it to “work” that used AI voices. Yeah this thing was a trainwreck, with luck & having seen the new game’s trailer I hope they learned from this.

  • Let’s call episode 1 what it really is: a proof of concept. What they forgot about is that demos exist 🙂 that’s one thing i miss about early “game shop” days, where just about everything you could buy had a free demo that was pretty much just the beginning of the game, or, at the very least, was a “proof of concept” that “this is what the game will be like, but better!” But it wasn’t portrayed as a prequal or “episode 1”

  • I remember perusal Insym playing this and he complained about it. You know your game is bad, when Insym, the cool dude of horror who can see the value and good even in the most generic horror games like Phasmo or I’m on Observation Duty clones doesn’t like it. Tbf he’s getting more and more critical these days but still.

  • One of the biggest gripes for me is that every mascot game nowadays needs merchandise… Fnaf as much as I despise the game (imo) I can somewhat see getting merchandise. But then you have Poppy Playtime, Garten of Banban, Piggy, etc. like Christ on a bike, how many of these games need a toy based on a few episodes… I miss when horror games actually FOCUSED on horror and not to the kids as much. This is one of the many reasons I love Amnesia: The Bunker and older titles. In The Bunker: it’s dark, gritty, and pretty damn immersive. You’re always on edge and the generator doesn’t help you feel anymore comfortable when you have to constantly keep it topped up on fuel. Another series is Outlast: same dark and gritty environment, but it also has some interesting lore like MK ultra and the involvement of the C.I.A on experimenting with the population. Me and my boys are playing Outlast Trials and genuinely having a fun time. What I’m trying to get at here is, STOP doing mascot horror and deal with actual horror! Nobody wants the shitty toys that just sit on the isle, and no kid wants unless they’re between the ages of That’s the guy from Fortnite to No mom, I only eat unhappy meals now.

  • I had no idea that the QR code monster led to the discord because for some reason it just never occurred to me that it would lead anywhere but the fact that it leads to the discord is?? Kind of gross? I dunno maybe it’s just me. but it feels like a missed opportunity when it could lead to a monster entry in a database or something that actually adds to the game experience instead of something that tricks you into a discord sever.

  • I have two cats. The first is Fozzy. He’s (I think) 12 years old (for some reason my family can never remember his age, and I don’t feel like doing the math to figure it out). He’s really fat and fluffy, and he has orange and white fur and green eyes. He’s a grumpy old man, but we love him. Then there’s Chief, who’s only around 4 years old. We don’t know his actual birthday, but we celebrate it the day after mine. Fozzy’s birthday is the day after my older sibling’s, so I thought this was fair. Chief looks a lot like your cat Popo (I think that’s what you said but correct me if I’m wrong), but he has a bright pink nose and little bits of fur pointing off his ears like a lynx. He has a lot more energy, but he’s also so much more cuddly than Fozzy. His belly is so soft, and sometimes he’ll grab my hand and force me to rub his belly or head. When we first got him, he’d chase his tail like a dog, but he seems to have grown out of that. Both of them love human food and will not leave until they get to lick your plate, no matter how many times you push them away. Chief especially likes bread, to the point where we had to move all our bread because he’d eat through the bag. One morning I woke up and saw him dragging an entire loaf of bread into the living room with his mouth. He also taught himself to open pizza boxes to reach bread sticks. Fozzy was never so adamant and determined to get human food before we got Chief, so I think he’s a bad influence. This got really long so I’ll wrap it up by saying that they’re both little chaos gremlins but we love them.

  • My cat’s name is Melody. She got her name because she was crying when my fiance brought her home as a surprise for me. As soon as she set Melody down next to me on the bed, the little sweetheart stopped crying and fell asleep in my arm. It’s like she somehow knew that she was meant to be my kitty! 😸

  • my cat’s name is Chihiro, i like to call her “the teehee” when i talk about her. she got that name because she was always hiding and disappearing, so mom named her after the protagonist of Spirited Away. she still seems a bit apprehensive towards me, but now she doesn’t run away when i look at her, so i consider that a win! 😀

  • I originally just talked about my cat because of the end. As an artist I’ve been told that I’ll have to make work I don’t care about to be secsesful, but I know that will make a bad product. This is an excellent case study for that point. I’d never though Zoocosis would have been made by the same people. It’s a miracle how much of a difference passion can make. I have a cat! Her name is Optamis Feline, yes it’s a pun. She’s 10 years old, and has her own personal box in the kitchen on a table. That table has the pet food bags, and her food and water dish on them. We call it her table, and her box. A stool that came with it is also there to help her climb up. She used to hunt mice and rats before I moved, but now sleeps on my desk chair. I love Optamis.

  • It ain’t just the voices that are AI generated, by the looks of it the script is written by AI too, which is why there are these details that get brought up but ultimately lead to nothing. They lead to nothing because the AI can’t maintain consistency. I distinctly recall a certain point in the game where the main character talks about the establishment as if they’ve already been there as an employee, but then in another case of monologuing later they mention they just finished college and act like it’s their first time in the establishment.

  • I heard about Sparky in a similar way you did; seeing Markiplier uploaded a article on it, and, like you said as well, I didn’t watch his playthrough of the game fully either. Hearing what you said about how the developers were never passionate about creating Sparky really surprised me too. I agree with what you said on how game devs should work on what they want to make rather than on what they think will pull in a fan base. I commonly tell others that if there’s something they aren’t passionate about/aren’t enjoying doing then they should reevaluate what they’re doing and if they should continue, potentially by revamping it in a way they like, or just start on something new. I did the same thing last year when I looked at the content I was creating and I do enjoy the way I make it now rather than how I use to go about it. Reguardless, this was an interesting game to learn about and, as always, I look forward to seeing what you do next.

  • About my cat?! Gladly! His name is Sage, and he’s an American short-hair. We got him in 2020, right before COVID decided to screw the world over. He was about 8 months, so we got a little bit of the cute kitty stage in there. He was a rescue, possibly being born in an animal shelter for all we knew. He’s a bit of a super needy, bratty boy. He knows what he wants and will let you know when he wants it, but he wants it on his terms. No. He doesn’t come to you for pets if he wants them. You need to get up and go over to him to pet him. But overall, he is very sweet. A real cuddlebug. I refuse to imagine life without him now.

  • Forgot this existed, makes so much more sense why now. My Cats are: Pepsi, as of writing this she is 17 and was a fluffy tennis ball that decided to run inside when my father opened the door thinking she was one of my other cats, we’re still unsure how. Snoopy, she is 12 and a prissy little monster, she was thrown at my mother when she made a half hearted threat that she’d steal her if they don’t properly keep tabs on her since she kept following my mother. Tinker, he is 12 and is an absolute sweetheart despite being easily the biggest of the cats, he was taken from his mother while he was too young and dumped, found him stuck in a cardboard box under a bush. Slinky, he is 12 and is the latest addition, he’s been hanging around since he was a feral kitten but got along with the others and behaved generally well, only a few years ago did we manage to actually catch and desex him and he decided that the inside cat life is more his style.

  • Okay you know what since everyone plays litteraly any mascot horror game that comes out apparently how about one makes a game titled “spaghetti du deppi” where the mascot is an italiano and the lore is you the player love pineapple on pizza and to break spaghetti which makes the italian send you to the shadow realm or something LoL can’t get more creative than this

  • Yoooo that zoo game looks really cool though. My cat is a little old man who still thinks he is a kitten. He refuses to drink from anywhere but the bathroom sink and will sit on it and demand that one of us turn it on for him to drink…. even if it’s on sometimes. He is also going through a wrasslin’ phase lately so my roommate made him a long pillow to attack so he will stop going after our feet. It’s very cute because when he’s done attacking the pillow he just lays there hugging it. He also meows like a kitten. He has recently taken up sleeping in doorways though like the bathroom doorway because he has no self-preservation instinct.

  • My cat is named Ghost and he’s a black and white cat who’s surprisingly stupid yet smart. He knows how to play fetch and will actually bring the ball back to me and drop it, but he isn’t aware of the fact his tail is part of his body and he will frequently bite it. When said bite causes pain his solution is to BITE HARDER. I love him but he’s so smart yet so stupid.
