I always thought Mormons just believed the same thing as Christians but had a different belief about Joseph Smith and had “additional” scriptures that they believed in. When I went through the temple, I learned several things. One of which was I was making a covenant with the Lord to keep sacred things sacred. I had a choice given to me to do so or leave. It seems all other religions that are successful, like Mormonism, base their beliefs in Judaeo Christian beliefs. You can get a lot further with a lie if you base some of it in truth. This is done with Islam, Rabinic Judaism, Amish, and even Catholicism. They start with the truth of God and then slowly make the tradition, rather than the Word, the most important part of their worship. And Jesus is gradually squeezed out for other mortal, sinful men. Muhammad, the Pope, and John Smith are all examples of this tactic. Cults even today will start with a little of the truth of God, and then gradually move away from His Word to some sort of idolatry, whether it be material, or man.
