I only ever judged one runic tattoo. I was doing a physical on this woman and saw she had runes behind her ear. I asked “Oh is that Elder or Younger Futhark?” Her”Oh it’s Ancient Norse” Me”Uh okay. What’s it mean?” Her”if you want change, you must embrace the chaos.” The tattoo was literally just Loki. She wasn’t exactly wrong on it, but she definitely wasn’t right.
In my early days, I did all of the rune castings and bind runes, but as I did more research, I stopped because the runes, as far as I have been able to learn, were never used that way. The modern use of runes as divination is based on tarot. Actual “spells” were just written out from what I have been able to learn. Another good resource is Jackson Crawford.
When I was young (teenager) I dabbled in runes. I did one reading that scared me, though. I was doing a reading for a friend, and we had been talking about a minor opperation she was getting ready for. I told her to ask a question, and I would draw and cast the runes to try to answer. Her question was “How will it turn out?” Just those exact words. Now, I thought she was asking about her opperation; what I drew and cast made absolutely no sense: a bunch of stuff about secrets and betrayals came up, so I kinda laughed and thought it was just silly nonsense for a silly superstitious game. When I looked at her face, though, I had questions. She looked troubled, and I asked why; the “prediction” was a bunch of silly nonsense about an opperation, I said. She informed me then that what she had been thinking about when she asked her question was: Her relationship with her current boyfriend. Creepy, right? Want to know what’s creepier? A couple years after her and I lost touch, we got to talking again. Turns out her relationship to the douche-barb went EXACTLY the way my prediction said. Correlation? Causation? The gods playing tricks on me? No idea. But really cool.

Warning : 405 pages but only about 20 about divination. It is academic research and thoughtful explanation about possible meanings of runes, historical background, etc. With sources. It is an academic approach written by a practising witch. I found it very useful and I realised how complex runes are. There is a lot we don’t know, she is clear about the missing bits and academic debate around them. It is not an “easy” read if you are looking for a manual with instructions and easy, straightforward meanings, but it is worth reading if you want to delve into the subject.
Great article, I’ve been writing my diary in elder futhark for more than 45 years. The letters in my opinion are not magic but for daily use, you can write a spell in futhark, but also with roman or greek letters. I use it for every day writing because in dutch, there are sounds that need 2 letters in the roman alphabet. in runes you need one runes like ei, ng.

I wish you were making these articles when i was younger, the information that was available at the time was that the runes have their own individual meanings/properties… So I looked through the meanings of each rune, picked the meanings I connected with the most and got them tattooed. Now the common opinion is that they were simply an alphabet, now I’m looking into some cover-up ideas inspired by the religion. The tattoos are in Elder Futhark too so the sharp lines will probably still show through.

I just found your website. Immediately subscribed. What’s your opinion of using runes and their capabilities if your ancestors were not nordic? More specifically if you are from another ethnicity. Not to put you in the spot, I believe that if you think that a culture should remain within the boundaries of their own blood related people, that’s a valid opinion. I am Hispanic, I do not consider myself a weird modern viking nor I feel that I had ancenstry over there either. I am pretty much proud of where I come from but nordic paganism and magic is something that always has captured my attention and liking. Sometimes I feel like a pretender because I am not blood related, so I try to approach things always with respect for the implicit history.
I agree that it’s not worth getting upset over the correct methods of “ANCIENT” spirituality. Including those that may be only flavored that way such as Wicca. We are lucky to have people today taking interest in any form of ancient (like) spirituality instead of belonging to main stream religions that would still love to burn us at the stake if they could. No matter how much a person claims their ancient heritage it is still ancient, and not even close to being able to be lived or experienced today as it was then. The experience today is not how they would have experienced it no matter how much one tries to get it right. We simply do our best to enjoy the experience as best we can and maybe share that experience with others so that we don’t go back to the groups that execute people like us! I don’t feel that our ancestors will be upset!

I have a verse from havamal on my arm. Translated to old Danish, written phonetically in the younger futhark. I actually had help with the phonetic translation from a Norwegian guy, through a friend. The only negative comment I had is: Why isn’t it in old Norse. Because then I wouldn’t be able to understand it myself 🙂

It is quite suitable (hypoþetically speaking) for a change of þe official script of germanic countries to write German, Dutch and Frisian in elder fuþark, english and maybe frisian in Ænglisc fuþorc and for Norþ germanic ciuntries to use þe younger fuþark. However, þis is still a dream, but did my part to get closer to it by inventing a runic orþography for þeedish (german), a modification of þe elder fuþark.

7:49 I’m Dutch and started learning about the rune’s recently. I’m aware that my roots are in the north of the Netherlands and probably Frisian (my last name ends with “SEN”, like the Scandinavian “SON” and means son of… It really bothers me that all information about the Frisians comes from foreign sources. Every archeological site or museum I visit in my country is all about Romans, Prehistoric cultures ect but almost nothing about Viking (sub) cultures. Do you know any Dutch sites?
Question, if we know more about the meaning of the younger and Anglo Saxon futhark runes than the elder futhark runes, is it then safe to say that the runes corresponding between the elder, the younger and Anglo Saxon futhark runes are the runes we know about in the elder futhark. Since a lot of the runes between the elder, younger and Anglo Saxon are similar, so if the meaning of the runes that correspond is clear in the younger and Anglo Saxon then is that meaning the same for similar symbols in the elder futhark? On Anglo Saxon and the Dutch and using it for art. A must listen is: Sowulo a Dutch band with a sound similar to Wardruna and all lyrics are in Anglo Saxon.
I tend to hold onto the theory that rune casting is a fairly modern phenomenon. Back when the runes were first being used as a means of written communication, few knew how to read, so that itself seemed to be a magical act that could woo those who could not. To be able to look at these lines and symbols and see them as someone’s words or instructions would be seen as something spectacular. Kind of like in the TV show, Norsemen, when Rufus escapes and ends up at this small camp of a little tribe and blows them away with the thumb pulling trick and doing pantomime. Everyone is flabbergasted by this “magic” Rufus is doing. As humans, we like to turn seemingly small events into grandiose stories. Like the guy across the street gets caught with a little bit of pot. By the time this news reaches the bar at the other end of town, he was banging the babysitter and giving her and all of her friends ecstasy. Somewhere along the line, much like my given example, runes went from a simple form of communication to fortune telling and divination as people became more literate in reading. That’s just my theory. Not saying I’m right or wrong, it’s just a conclusion I came up with.

So glad you mentioned the over use of elder futhark immediately 😉 winds me up so much as a fellow nordic language scholar. A good friend of mine is a tattoo artist and I’ve started checking what his clients actually want so that they actually get what they want rather than wanting a viking thing and getting an elder futhark thing or even worse some contrived thing about certain runes having meanings beyond just their phonetic value which was of course to those cultures magical in an of itself. The fact that you could make meaning out of it was already magic it did not require deeper meaning!
I think that more than just one single member of a village would be able to read Runes. The Rune poems are no doubt much older than the written versions we have, and I think likely were fairly common knowledge among the people, since they would have been passed through oral tradition. By name alone you can guess the sound the letter makes., and understand what was written. since after all, they were written phonetically. We have Runic graffiti from the Vikings all over Europe/Turkey, meaning that certainly a few “average” young men were capable of writing. I’d guess at least one member of each household could probably read Runes, perhaps more.

First off, great article and Thank You. I’m wondering if anyone can help me translate something to Runes for a tattoo, my last name. My last name is Secor. Before it was Americanized, the name was Sicard. My family came to the states from France where they apparently lived as Sicards in the Mornac-Sur-Seudre region of France as Salt Farmers for generations, going back to the 14th century. But the name Sicard is of Germanic origin (hence my German blood). Sicard is the contracted version of the Germanic Sigehard, derived from the Old High German Sigu; meaning Victory, and Hart; meaning Brave. Sigu comes from the Proto-German Segaz, and Hart comes from the Proto-German Harduz. Essentially, that is what I am trying to translate: Segaz Harduz … Bonus points to anyone who can help me trace what Germanic tribe my family may have come from, being that I loose track in the Mornac-Sur-Seudre region of France. My Guess is some blend of Frank and/or Visigoth. The area was very disputed for quite awhile between the Visigoths and Franks, and the Visigoths actually controlled the area for an extended period of time.
I always tell people to use the runes to write whatever you want but if they have to stand alone as a symbol or be part of a binding rune then its better to know what you are doing. On a side note. I have never understood why we havnt gone back to using the runes as a writing system here in skandinavia? Eastern europeans have their own writing system, so do the Greek, the asians and the middleeastern, soo what the hell?
So, I came across Elder Futhark a while back and for whatever reason I picked it up after glancing at the alphabet a couple of times for a minute or two. Now every single one of my notes at College or at Work are written in Elder Futhark ( I added some of my own symbols that I place before a sentence to signify what language I am writing in) but basically I just spell out words using the alphabet. I knew about the individual meanings but I’m more invested in having my books be illegible to most people and make it seem like I’m writing ancient spells when really it’s just some notes about a novel or something.
we do know elder futhark names for them using a lot of evidence, jackson crawfords articles explain it so much better than i ever could but we know how to speak elder futharks spoken language, and we know how to translate it, jackson crawford and many others have put a lot of time and work into translating it. we do not know the magick connection to them, use elder futhark for language, younger futhark for individual runes but that is never known to be used in that way until much much later. so i mean if that’s what u believe go off but it’s not based in history (rune casting) at least not as far back as the vikings

I know what you’re saying at the end about the controversy, but it’s quite clear that lots of people get carried away especially with the meaning of individual elder futhark runes. Personally I would like to see a let up in that silly belief because it ultimately blinds people to the Odin mythology understanding of runes that the ability to write in the first place is an exceptionally important thing and truly magical for what it is. No one rune was more important than another which is why we see so commonly the whole younger futhark alphabet carved in one line in stone.
Could you inform me what category Gaels falls under? I have a distant Irish heritage and have always had a great respect for the Irish people both old and new but nothing seems to be concrete on what runes they would use. My research has lead me to confusion so just looking for a straight answer lol.
Its not that we don’t have as good a memory as we used to. It is that how we use memory is very different. The main way we think of memory is that memory is remembering specific information we have been previously exposed to. However, the other form of memory is remembering where we know that specific information is from. It is like remembering a phone number; what is easier: to remember the specific combination of numbers, or to know where we can access it easily? If the access place is reliable, we can default to that form of memory, remember the basics, and build upwards more easily. It is hard to memorize 40 different phone numbers, but much easier if you remember where you put/how to open your phone book (electronic technology is gonna change how we look at language quite a bit; like, seriously how do you convey the “like to hear yourself talk” idea in a text conversation? Like to hear yourself type? Dunno, different kettle of the cookie bounces).
You can basically write in almost any language with the elder futhark or the anglo-frisian futhorc. The younger futhark is more limiting because of all the missing runes/sounds. Still, you will certainly have a helluva hard time writing the word “buzz” with the anglo-frisian futhorc. …’cause it doesn’t have a “z” despite the extra runes. ( The Z rune in the elder becomes the “X” in the anglo-frisian. ) I guess there’s just not too many bees buzzing around in northern Germany. 😐

As a german myself, i wondered if there was anything resembling the Viking age futhark, for the older germanic tribes. And now you said that the elder futhark is the one used by old germanic/proto german tribes. Now i will further look into that topic. ( i live in Cherusk area around the Teutoburger Forest and i believe that my ancestry will reach down to that time)
The way I see it is this Is the elder futhark the most historically accurate way to use divination runes? Probably not but on the same token we don’t really know exactly how they used the runes to divine runes or used runic magic. So by this token why not use the elder futhark or younger futhark. While yes rune divination today is based off of tarot that doesn’t mean it can’t be used in today’s context. odin himself was constantly learning new forms of wisdom and divination, and yes I feel like this info would then grow to become more modern based on the needs, so if this is true then why can’t we take history and then remember and learn the original purposes and stories, but then modernize the lessons.(yes I know the original meaning of odin) Summary: yes the old forms of divination is most likely lost and will never be recovered but that doesn’t mean we can’t use some “sympathetic magic” and recreate it based on our needs and knowledge of today. Innovate for the future, never forget and always learn the lessons of the past.
People don’t realize that standardized spelling and grammar (at least in the English language) is a very new historical phenomenon. As an American, I find reading the written records left by my forebears fascinating; in the journal of a man like Meriwether Lewis he seems barely literate by today’s standards, but he was an educated and sophisticated man when he was writing at the beginning of the 19th Century…yesterday, in other words. As the boast carved in the tree said, “D. Boone Kilt a Bar, 1803”. As for the old Norse; they were, by definition (as you stated) NOT a literate people. Who can expect ironclad rules of spelling and grammar?
I have noticed something with the gothic language and that is that it has ecual amount of letters as the runic scripture, I have been fascinated and making gothic letters a little more interesting and its weird but the printed version vs the writing version is different so its difficult to know exactly how to write it “perfectl”. If you have seen a sort of hidden knowledge within the appearance of runic scripture then Is image you might write some gothic words in runic scripture and I find it interestin. Gothic wanted to separate perhaps from runic scripture and be the first germanis in the area to use their own language or their tribe is now differen, dont you thin?
greetings from Sweden. I’ve studied runes thoroughly for a couple of years now (younger futhark mostly) and have a few tips to thoose interesting in writing them. I have runic tattoos myself. So, lesson #1, if you’re considering making a rune tattoo, a modern age runic stone, bone carving or anything that includes runes DON’T use old words, like old norse, or old anglo saxian etc. Write your runes in the modern language you are currently speaking. Let’s say i decide to carve a rune stone today, why would i write it in old norse? that would just make it into a cheap replica and it would also be unauthentic. Rune carvers back in the viking age, bronze age etc carved their runes in the language they currently spoke. Why would not you? just a little tip.. have a good day.
Funny story. I did not properly did research on runes before I got a tattoo with runes. My wifes name and my daughters name. Yes very foolish. It just hit me when I was allready tattooed. I honestly felt very very dumb and impulsive. So I figured out which runes it were and it turned out to Anglo Frisian. I have a Dutch and British nationality. I think the Gods did apreciate me calling my daughter Freya. So the runes choose you. BTW: nobody ever bitched about my runes.
I’m frisian. Why do you think old frisian and old english is not the same? Most of the frisian people had to leave their country because of the high waters between 325 and 425 AD. Frisians were ofcourse very familiar with the sea and trade oversee. Gess where they went 😊😊😊 My DNA is frisian 70% and scandinavian 30%. My full-blood cousin has 5% english.
I think the Runik alphabet is the Orhun alphabet of the Turks. Exactly the same. Not really a coincidence because Odin is a Turk. He came from Tyrkland (Turkland). That family mingled with the Scandinavians. The Troy Turks from Anatolia, that send 1 family to Italy were called the Etruscans. The Etruscan Turks brought the letter alphabet after the symbolic Egyptian hieroglyphes. The exact previous lookalike from the Orhun alphabet. These Etruscans build Rome. And that sea they have named Tyrhennia, y=u, thus Turhannia. TURAN means unity of all Turks. And the Turks were writing from right to left always. Like the cuneiform of the Sumerian Turks. Egyptian hieroglyphes that are written in Sumerian Turkic. Even the Sanskrit before is Turkic. Created with the Indians. And the Turks always used 1 or 2 dots to seperate words in sentences.
rune casting is not a science. to understand a rune you have to feel it and listen to it. i’m taking a rune class with 10 other people i never met before hosted by a shaman. he lets us fell into every ruhe for some time and then we all take turns in telling which visions and feelings we received and without fail everyone has very similar, if not exact same descriptions. we are working with the elder futhark. it’s actually pretty remarkable and not something i had expected. we all have different backgrounds and very little to no experience with runes beforehand. i’m going to create my own runes after yule.

Wonderful content and thanks for the nice talk about runes. I however, have to disagree with your comments regarding peoples memories and the ability to store information. Might be, that they were able to tell hour long poems from memory, but how does that lead to the conclusion that in todays age that would be so different? I bet if I asked some friends they would be able to talk to me for hours telling me the story of the matrix franchise, lord of the rings or star wars. The only difference is probably that if I ask my friends again after a year they probably do not recall the exact wording, but I attribute that to the fact that thats not important for that content. Its like saying my child is smarter or I believe you used the word intelligent simply because it remembers bedtime stories I use to tell them down to the word when I dont.
