BYU mascot Cosmo the Cougar, known for his impressive dance moves and flips, has gained attention from both fans and critics. He has earned a “best mascot” nomination on social media for his fire knife dance during BYU’s victory over Texas Tech. Cosmo is known for his basketball-dunking abilities, unmatched dance moves, and an appetite for food. The Daily Universe is creating a series of oral histories to learn about iconic moments in BYU sports from the people who were actually there in the moment.
Byu graduates share their experiences of watching, meeting, or being BYU’s dancing, prize-tossing, unicycle-riding mascot Cosmo the Cougar. On October 15, 1953, the Brigham Young Universe reported on Cosmo’s campus debut, noting that he was the official mascot of Brigham Young University’s athletic teams. Cosmo came out and performed with the Cougarettes during the first quarter timeout, and a viral video of the performance went viral with millions.
Scientist Stephan Millard, class of 2020, has fond memories of being the Cougars beloved mascot. Cosmo is known for his flips, tricks, and impressive dance moves, whether making appearances at sporting events or performing viral dances with the Cougarettes. Cosmo is constantly one of the best dancing mascots, but it is important to acknowledge how much easier his costume is to dance.
