Minato and Kushina discuss the difficulty of sealing the complete Kyuubi, a beast with immense Nine Tails chakra. They split the beast into two halves, sealing the Yin half into themselves and the Yang half into the newborn Naruto. Minato dies shortly after using the Shiki Fujin technique and is sealed into the Yin half.
Minato told Naruto that he only sealed half of Kyubi’s chakra inside of him, not the other half. The reason for this is that the Kyuubi’s chakra was split down the Yin and Yang lines, creating a half-tailed beast. He added Kushina’s chakra to allow her to meet an older Naruto and aid Naruto in his attempt to control Kurama’s chakra.
Kyuubi Chakra Mode, or Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, is a unique form of transformation given to jinchūriki of Nine-Tails. Naruto gains the power of Kurama, which is too large to seal inside Naruto and perform a Sealing Jutsu. Minato needed a vast amount of Chakra, which he was lacking. To seal half of Kyuubi, he used the Hakke Fuuin (Eight Triagram Seal) to split it in-universe.
Minato split the Kyubi in-universe because he didn’t believe even his modified Eight Trigrams Seal could hold back the full power of the Nine-Tails. The “Yin-Yang” chakra is the basis for Genjutsu, and the portion of the Kyuubi’s chakra that Minato sealed into the Shinigami was shrunken more than half its original size.
Minato gained control of Kurama’s chakra due to his constant battle with the beast within the Shinigami, ultimately acquiring Kurama Chakra Mode. The story highlights the challenges faced by Minato and Kushina in achieving their goals and the importance of understanding the differences between the two chakras.

Why did Minato give Naruto the evil Kurama?
In the battle against the Demonic Statue, Tobi summoned the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei, which contained the reincarnated Gold and Silver Brothers. Kurama requested Naruto to switch with it to explain the situation and the Ten-Tails’ revival. Kurama echoed Kakashi’s words that something needed to be done before the Ten-Tails’ revival was completed. Naruto agreed, and Kurama smiled when Naruto opposed Tobi’s ideals.
Tobi tried to instill doubt in Naruto by asking what would happen if he neglected the legacy of Jiraiya and Minato. Kurama, recalling Minato’s words, asked Naruto to switch again and sealed it into Naruto to defeat Tobi. After melding their chakra together, Naruto entered his Tailed Beast Mode and began his assault on Tobi.
Kurama and Naruto battled against Madara’s wooden dragon. The reincarnated Uchiha summoned Hashirama’s giant wooden dragon to restrain Naruto. Naruto quickly manifested Kurama’s body to fight against it, but the dragon managed to bind Naruto and drain Kurama’s chakra, forcing his tailed beast form to falter. Naruto escaped from its coils and created a shadow clone to protect Kakashi from Obito.
Kurama instructed Naruto to switch places with it and tossed Kakashi at Obito, who used Kamui to absorb him into Kamui’s dimension. Despite initially berating the dragon, Kurama assured Naruto that he could now fight without worry. Naruto attacked Obito again and phased through him, but surprisingly, Obito coughed up blood. Kurama revealed that it transferred some of its chakra to Kakashi, allowing him to attack Obito in the other world and return to the real world with Kamui.
Why was Kurama angry at Minato?
Kurama was displeased to find that his plan to escape Naruto’s body had been thwarted by the seal imposed by the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze.
Why did Minato seal half of Kurama inside him?
Minato employed the “Reaper Death Seal” technique to divide Kurama’s chakra in two, effectively sealing the Yin aspect within himself and the Yang within Naruto. He and others did not assert that it was impossible to seal the entire Kyubi in someone.
Why did Minato split the Nine-Tails?
Kushina, already dying from her ordeal, offered to have the Nine-Tails sealed back in her to die with her. Minato rejected this idea, instead sealing the Nine-Tails into Naruto using the Eight Trigrams Seal. Minato cut the Nine-Tails’ chakra in half, leaving only its yang chakra. The Nine-Tails tried to kill Naruto, forcing Minato and Kushina to use their own bodies to shield him. Minato gave the key to the seal to Gerotora and sent Naruto to Jiraiya.
Hiruzen followed Minato to their location but couldn’t break through Kushina’s barrier. Minato asked Konoha’s villagers to regard Naruto as a hero for helping save the village and not hate him for containing the monster. He sealed the Nine-Tails into Naruto, adding his and Kushina’s chakra to the seal so they could watch him grow up and help him gain control of the Nine-Tails.
Hiruzen brought Naruto back to Konoha and shared Minato’s final request with the survivors. Most were unwilling to follow his instructions, as they couldn’t set aside their grief and bitterness after the attack. Hiruzen forbade discussing the Nine-Tails with future generations, but this largely failed, as those in Naruto’s age group only copied their parents’ hate, leading to Naruto growing up lonely.
Does Naruto get 100% of Kurama?
Kurama, a powerful fox with immense brute force, is known for its ability to raise tsunamis and flatten mountains with just a single swipe from one of its tails. Despite losing half of its chakra, Kurama still retains immense power, breaking through Pain’s Chibaku Tensei and overwhelming Gyūki’s attempts to restrain it. It was able to fight back five of Obito’s controlled tailed beasts, even matching the power of their unified Tailed Beast Ball with one of its own, eventually defeating them and forcing Obito to reseal them.
Kurama is also extremely fast despite its massive size, catching Naruto quickly while he was in Sage Mode. It has immense durability, capable of taking several hits from both Naruto and Hashirama’s senjutsu-enhanced techniques and blocking a Tailed Beast Ball from the Ten-Tails’ initial form without major damage. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Yin half of Kurama sealed inside the reincarnated Minato transferred nearly all of its chakra into Naruto, effectively restoring nearly all of Kurama’s power.
Kurama is cunning and can formulate strategies in the midst of battle, like Naruto. It has remarkable leadership skills, staying composed even when being overwhelmed by the Ten-Tails and effectively telling its new team-mates on how best to handle the mighty tailed beast. In the anime, Kurama is also knowledgeable of fūinjutsu, quickly determining their natures and weaknesses.
Kurama can accumulate and create a huge amount of chakra in a short amount of time once it has used up most of its own, which was passed on to nearly everyone in the Allied Shinobi Forces.
What happened to the other half of Kyuubi’s chakra?
Naruto was born with half of the Kyuubi’s chakra sealed within himself, which remained trapped until he was revived with the Edo Tensei. In the course of the confrontation with Madara, Minato bestowed upon Naruto the Kyuubi chakra.
Can Kurama be revived by Minato?
In the event of Minato’s demise in a pure land, Kurama will be resurrected and subsequently pursue a nomadic existence until he is apprehended by a formidable shinobi such as Madara or Hashirama. Minato was situated within the interior of the Shinigami, or reaper, seal, thereby enabling the half-formed Kurama to remain within.
Which Kurama is stronger, yin or yang?
Yin Kurama has the effect of enhancing Naruto’s physical abilities, but it has no significant impact on the form or projection of his jutsu, given that he already possesses the power of such abilities.
Does Minato still have half of Kurama?
Minato, a Jinchuriki, became the Nine-Tails’ Jinchuriki shortly before being sealed inside the Shinigami’s stomach. He and Kurama’s Yin half were sealed inside the Reaper Death Seal, making his time as a Jinchuriki short-lived. However, releasing the seal kept Minato and Kurama together, maintaining his status as a Jinchuriki. Minato’s reanimation differed from his counterparts, as he had never reached the Pure Land or Limbo, preventing Kurama from being sealed inside him.
The Tailed-Beast Chakra Mode has two stages, with the first one obtained after subduing the beast and extracting its chakra. This grants the Jinchuriki the power to cloak themselves in the beast’s chakra and transform into it, but this is against the beast’s will, as they are restrained within the Jinchuriki’s body after defeating it in a battle of wits.
Does Naruto still have large chakra without Kurama?
Naruto exhibits considerable chakra and power even in the absence of Kurama’s chakra, as evidenced by his ability to perform feats that would otherwise require the use of this additional source of energy.
Why can’t Naruto fully transform into Kurama?
Naruto has struggled to fully recreate Kurama’s form due to the fox’s resistance. However, he has gained Kurama’s cooperation and entered the Tailed Beast Mode, which is unique in size and resembles the beast more closely than other jinchūriki. Naruto’s chakra avatar of Kurama gains rings around its eyes when accessing Sage Mode, and even with his Six Paths Sage Mode, his Kurama avatar becomes larger and more powerful. By combining his Kurama avatar with other shadow clones, Naruto can manifest a form similar to Asura Ōtsutsuki’s.
Gaara’s Tailed Beast Mode is unique, as it is composed of sand that can shatter if knocked out. Shukaku, on the other hand, can gather natural energy quickly and replenish their senjutsu without the need for the Sage Art: Amphibian Technique. If a jinchūriki is also a sage, they can gather natural energy at a fast rate, allowing them to replenish their senjutsu without the need for the Sage Art: Amphibian Technique.
