📹 Jazzy’s Magic Spellbook: The Book Revealed, Part 1
Jazzy’s Magic Spellbook Adventure! Part 1! Jazzy’s mysterious adventure with the magic spell book begins. Will she defeat the …
My only problem with Charlotte in portrait of ruin is her inability to divekick. Like bro, she literally dropkicks a mummy in the face in the trailer and she can’t do it in game? Bruh Gripe aside, I personally think Charlotte is the more interesting character in terms of gameplay but that’s merely opinion.
So funny that Astre has slash weakness in this game and a strength against Holy. In Harmony of Despair she has MASSIVE def boost to slashing and you will only do 1-10 damage to her unless you use Holy. I remember when I tried PoR after Despair and started to fight her I was like ” wait…. shes strong against … huh?”
It’s possible with RNG to purify the sisters as solo Charlotte. I’ve done it myself but it’s been a while so all I remember is using Clear Skies and hoping for the sisters to use blizzard followed by ice sword. I would switch to and start casting Sanctuary as soon as the blizzard ended. There might’ve been more steps to it but I know it’s possible. Edit: Seems you can also do it by getting behind them during freeze bites or blizzard just far away enough so Stella can’t hit you and then hope their next attack is the giant ice wall. Either way it’s doable for sure.
I apologize if anyone has already brought this up, but there is a reason for Death changing colors in the fight. He basically has two “Modes” he can go into in the fight. One, the purple if I remember, is weaker to physical attacks and resists magic. The Second, the white mode, is weaker to magical attacks and resists physical. It’s basically trying to goad you into switching between Charlotte and Jonathan to deal with his mode’s weaknesses. Also, when Death creates the cage and starts bouncing his scythe against the walls, if you strike one of the sets of hands enough, it breaks the cage and ends the attack. Even with Charlotte’s physical attacks it doesn’t take long to do, but then again the Encyclopedia probably would make it take slightly longer. But, since you said that you were a fan of this game and you probably know that, I’m just going to leave that bit of advice there for people who haven’t played Portrait before.
Im to lazy to read the comments to see any gameplay advice and I hope you dont take this as me being rude but here are a few things that could have helped with the playthrough Short hop jump canceling when attacking (Basically tap the jump button then the attack button it lets you move while attacking grounded enemies) Also back dashing out of attacks can help in a similar way I had an idea for fighting behemoth because I could have sworn you could duck under his tongue but you cant (Just tested this crouching under it and sliding twice will completely dodge it) I just started the challenge at when you beat behemoth and got to him by the end of the vid. Love your content and the castlevania vids a are fantastic.
So two things you may not know, since you don’t mention them 1) Death changes his cloak’s color to show what he’s weak against. When dressed in black he’s weak to magic, when in white he’s weak to physical skills. It encourages you to switch characters. 2) The final boss crushing hands attack can’t be stopped, not because Charlotte can’t attack them in time, but because you’re supposed to use both characters to attack both hands at the same time. Combination attacks (like holy lightning) also would have worked. Regardless, it was a Charlotte only run, so eating it was the right move… What really surprised me is that said attack is survivable, it usually killed me in a single hit.
behemoth tong attack can be avoided, but it only has 2 paths: you either dodge the last hit with a jump, or have enough space to get out of its range. deaths grab attack: just sacrifice your partner to it. dont need to free them, and your not using mp enough for the huge mp drop to matter the creature: dark rift spell “let me introduce myself” 0 damage but lets you ignore allmost all of his ranged attacks the best legit, no glitches, money farm was actually using speed boost (you got access to this spell) in the cafe while having the gold ring on. or just do funny wind dupe glitch and and get multiple items (you hit start after completing a quest, but before closing the prompt). that one would take less time than legit but more time than full blown cheats
Feels wrong using hex editing to give you max gold when the quest glitch is present on dominus. They fixed the death softlock on the American version, but implemented back the quest bug on the European versions. And that bug was fixed in the European DS version, so the developers willingly added back the glitch in the EU version of Dominus
Fascinating challenge run, definitely one that fights against the game! I’ve always liked Portrait of Ruin – the regular dialogue updates in the menu were characterful, and as an old-school Sega Boy I appreciated that it references Bloodlines/New Generation, the only Castlevania to ever be released on a Sega console – but what does disappoint me about the game is how little it makes use of the WW2 setting. Other than the “Nation of Fools” portrait, with all the ruins in the background with a boss that’a giant ball of corpses as suitable subtext, there’s scarcely any reference to it in the game. It frustrates me just how many opportunities for thematic events are missed. It’s 1944 – in Romania! Dracula’s castle is right on the Eastern Front! Just imagine if Charlotte and Johnathan had to sneak past a German patrol to get to the castle instead of just walking through the woods, or you get to the castle roof and there’s a cutscene where you see a formation of Soviet aeroplanes try to bomb the castle thinking it’s just a normal position before the vampire sisters fly up and use their magic to obliterate them. As the game goes on, you have to dodge around a three-way battle that develops between Russians, Germans, and the Castle’s monsters as soldiers break in hoping to loot treasures, unaware that there’s vampires eager to feast on them all. Dracula likes eating communists, all the red flags hide the bloodstains… Portrait of Ruin is good, but it could have been more!
Been perusal Castlevania speedruns all weekend while ill and now I’ve been blessed with a Nyarly Castlevania upload after awaking from my slumber. Incredible work as always man! Also, in regards to Dracula’s final form and his wing attack, the only consistent way of preventing it is to have Jonathan out with you to attack the other side, so you’re typically doomed in this scenario in any solo challenge (no surprise considering this game’s emphasis on the duo system). With that said you should consider a challenge in the future where you can use both Jonathan and Charlotte, but only with their starter equipment.
The thumbnail of Charlotte hitting Jonathan with a book something that made me laugh because I always think that that would be something that she would do, especially if she was pissed lol. Playing this game in this series was a journey because I never played it originally but thanks to the collection I got a chance to play it I died a few times but funny enough I was able to get the requirements to get the best ending on my first run. The sisters were not that bad and they weren’t overly annoying like I’ve seen from other people in the past few years or even when I started to see people play The Game now. Either I was good or lucky but either way I took that victory lap and got the vampire killer to its true potential and only got like I think 3 boss fights left…… I need to get back to playing portrait of ruin since I’m so close to the end game. Also while switching to Jonathan and Charlotte a lot is childish I was thinking of another thing that’s childish and it specifically with Charlotte….. Just have her do a sexy pose lol.
about sandy grave’s boss, i think its because of your character that you deal less damage. while charlotte is near useless because of the magic endurance it has, its mainly because its a GIRL. its resistant to CHARLOTTE. this boss is intended to be fought with constant switching: Johnatan would deal constant damage while charlotte dodges the heart arrows it shoots. and yes, they deal no damage to charlotte.
I was kinda thinking of doing a Charlotte only run without damaging spells and this has kinda dissuaded me a bit; congrats on completing this crazy challenge. I kinda wish you unequipped Jonathan for the last boss in the Nest of Evil since then you’d be fighting a Doppelganger of Charlotte instead (the boss is always whatever’s considered your stronger character by the game, which 99% of the time will be Jonathan because of his better damage and defense), and it’s also just pretty funny to see Doppelganger Charlotte try to attack with the Encyclopedia but completely miss since I guess its AI only expects the player to equip a proper tome. Otherwise, great run; glad to see more Castlevania on the website against
Nothing immature about swapping between characters, it’s call dumb fun. One of my favorite forms of dumb fun is swapping between biggorons sword and megaton hammer in ocarina of time~ Another is picking on the club kermlings in DK64 since they flinch but can’t die unless you use a instrument. Now THAT is immature! XD
Fun fact about Dagon: If you just swim up to the top of the water when he begins sucking you can just dive kick on his head for the entire fight and he can’t do anything about it. Hell the spores he sends out are designed to attack you while facing him so a majority of the time you don’t have to worry about those either.
In the fights against Death, he has two forms: His Physical form (black cloak) and Magical form (white cloak), where the physical form takes increased damage from elemental damage (holy, poison, fire, ice, electric, etc…) where the magical form takes increased damage from physical damage (slash, blunt, etc…). Since the Encyclopedia is both Holy/Slash damage, it negates the resistances in both phases.
Nah, Portrait of Ruin is (or was) the strongest Death in the series. Why? Well postmortem he can brick your save, making your game unable to be completed. In fact it happens after you simply… skip cutscenes after fighting him. This makes game think you still fight Death, even when he is defeated so progress gets halted, mainly due to elevator not working. Sure, if you realise that you can just… reset the game but if you saved after beating death while glitch is active… you are simply screwed.
Well done! Also, I don’t blame you at all for using the miser ring & hex edits, because without that boost in damage, it is very likely that you wouldn’t have been able to damage Dracula’s final form fast enough to win before his unavoidable wing crush attack drained all of your healing reserves. Without it, you’d have to resort to breaking the rules, & allowing Johnathan to join you as an aid to break through the attack, IF that would even work given the difficulty in hitting them with the encyclopedia. All in all, I’d call this run a completable run solely due to the hex edit & miser ring, but an impossible one otherwise. Well done in any case, though, since it required lots of skill despite that.
i love the aesthetic of Nation of Fools, its a circus yes, but it also has the backdrop of a war torn city. keeping in mind that this game is set in WW2 and Brauner made this paining it likely reflects his hatred of the world’s nations for starting world war 2 which led to the death of his daughters. so he paints the Nations as Fools in a giant circus. also the boss being Granfaloon is fitting, as all the corpses of the war dead amalgamated into that demon.
20:15 I can’t say for sure, but I think Astarte might have a built in resistance to Charlotte’s attacks. Similar to how Puppet Master’s mannequins had purely hit based health instead of damage based back in Dawn of Sorrow, a casual player’s Charlotte is going to do pitiful damage too. Considering the boss is designed to bait out Jonathan to do any real damage at risk of getting him mind controlled, it would not surprise me if she was specially coded to just say no to Charlotte’s damage. Edit: ooh, the slide kick solution was clever. The funny thing is that it doesn’t even disprove my theory: I’ll bet the boosted fixed damage overrides Astarte’s resistance to Charlotte in general. Plus I doubt the devs ever thought you’d do this.
