The Sharks forgot to ask how scalable the berry farming to satisfy the demand generated by whatever they would do to boost the sales. There are reasons why certain specialty good would never be household product, even if they want to, just because the supply is so limited. Like Arenga sugar, for example
The best market for this product is by far in Asia, where alot of people prefer Traditional Chinese Medicine over western pills. TCM is taken in soup form, and they are often bitter and unpleasant even for adults, its a parents nightmare to get their kids to take TCM. This can be a total game changer!!!
We’ve had this berry in Ghana for ages it’s even common in most of the villages my granddad grew some in his house in the city, it’s mostly used by diabetic people or people who have been told to stop eating sugar because of this most of our grandparents never had diabetes or any high sugar related illness. It now not known by the current generation because they depend much on foreign medication.
This is one thing the sharks got wrong. These berries easily grow in our backyards in Ghana. It’s not a newly discovered fruit. And they haven’t created anything here. Hopefully they make as much as they can before everyone realises that it’s a simple fruit not worth $24 for the portions being offered.
the forget to mention it’s called Miraculin. the plants are originally from West Africa. quick background, west africans did not have flavorful food, so they used miracle fruit to enhance their food taste. I’ve had these since back in 2007. nothing new. this is a niche. i still do food parties with this, but it’s not something you can do long term.
This doesn’t actually change the properties of what you’re eating. Miracle fruit blocks our ability to taste sour. A lemon has sugar in it, but the sugar is overwhelmed by the sourness. Blocking the sour reveals the sweet. Some sour things don’t have sugar in them, and this fruit won’t miraculously make those things sweet. I have a couple of these bushes growing in my back yard.
I don’t really see an investable business. This is like a high priced fruit packing company. People have known about this berry for a long time and it hasn’t really taken off other than for the novelty. Berry causes high acid food to taste sweet, so you end up consuming large volumes of acidic foods and liquids. This is not good for your teeth and can exacerbate GERD.
